He was generally considered to be the best forward in basketball. His only problem was that he had to guard the opponent's best player - even guards or centers - and rebound and score. The Laker's GM said, "If I had drafted Johnson, we would have won several championships". You are right. Guys like him or Baylor were ruined by overwork and conditions that are now treatable.

Grew up watching the Jet, Butterbean Bob Love, Stormin' Norman Van Lier, and Jerry Sloan at the Chicago Stadium in the early 70's. Would win 50+ every year then lose to Wilt or Kareem in the playoffs. If only they had Artis in those years instead of '77 on probably would have won 2 or 3 chips.

He led the league in true shooting percentage and nobody noticed. Very effective but especially against smaller centers.

When the Jazz moved to Utah from New Orleans they were on life support. A.D was the star attraction and was a big reason for them becoming a playoff team. I don't know if they become economically viable in Salt Lake without Dantley. As a Utahn I appreciate his contributions and he was an absolute joy to watch.

First player, and one of only 2, to lead a team to a NBA championship with NO OTHER Hall of Fame level player on the team - and I think that is STILL Portand's only championship. Hakeem in the first Houston championship with him was the other (They added Clyde late in the season for the second one, due to Jordan's late season return).

I also grew up near Indianapolis - and saw a LOT of Pacer games on the TV, as well as a couple live - DURING the ABA days. There are reasons Mel was one of 2 players on the "All Time ABA Team" to manage more than one "MVP" vote (Dr. J blew everyone else away on that particular vote) and was one of 7 that achieved "unanimous" vote totals to the team. He was a KEY component to all 3 of the Pacer Championships, and to them making the Finals 4 times (more on each than ANY OTHER ABA team). Reggie is about the only Pacer with enough stature to compete with some of those old time Pacer legends out of all the players that played for them in the NBA (Don Buse might argue the case, but he played during BOTH the ABA *AND* the NBA days).

I grew up in Indianapolis and those Pacer games at the Fairgrounds Coliseum were the loudest and best games I have ever watched. Watching Mel battle Artis Gilmore and Dan Issel was really something! That was when guys didn't take games off !!! Mel was a true " blue collar " player and Indy loved him. Those Pacer teams were as good or better than what the NBA had then , and throw in Slick Leonard as coach and that's entertainment !!! Thanks for posting these ABA videos.

Don't forget that 76 of the 84 players who finished the last season of the ABA went on to play in the NBA. And with only 7 teams the level of competition was insane. I followed the Colonels, the ABA was legit.

AD, became one of my favorite players when he joined the Pistons in the late 80's. One moment I'll never forget, is when in the playoffs, he collided head to head with Vinnie Johnson diving for a loose ball, which almost knocked both men out cold. I believe it was against the Celtics.

I love AD. I was in my late teens when AD was with the Pistons. Yes, he was an incredibly efficient scorer. The biggest issue with AD was that he was very much like Carmelo in that once he got the ball, he was a black hole. Unless he was double teamed right away, he was going to hold the ball until he shot it or got fouled. I don't know how many times he got the ball at the elbow 3 point line and just faked a 3 point set shot until his defender fell for it and he drove past or didn't fall for it and he shot the 3. Also, the refs *never* called AD for traveling even though some of his moves he was clearly taking 3-4 steps, especially his spinarama low post move. I once saw AD run out for a fast break, get the ball maybe at the 3 point line beyond the top of the key, and make a layup without dribbling and not get called for a travel. It was hilarious!
