To someone who views this as a test, a dream sounds like just the comforting sort of bullshit the test would try to lull us into. This is why everything sucks around us. We think that shit is going to go away when we don't look at it. Or that other people are going to solve the problems around us so that we may rest easy in the comfort of our minds, musing on the "dream of life." I'm sure Mr. Watts was a very thoughtful and well intended guy, but to me the hindsight is clear as day: we have too many people thinking that we are living in a grand delusion, and that may be, but the only thing we KNOW FOR CERTAIN is that this world has problems that need everyone's full attention, and constant effort to improve. I am in no way meaning to imply that Mr. Watts is anathema to the idea, merely that if this were some grand dream we voluntarily choose to enter, it is equally valid to see the workload set before us as the greatest task, and maybe even the reason why we exist, not simply something to be shirked when we recognize the existence beyond the veil.

This is a concept explored in one of his books, i forget which religion or belief it was, but I always found it a bit stupid. A god like figure can do absolutely anything, which would obviously include doing anything to itself. If I'm god, currently living in pleasure, simply erasing my own memories would be enough to never get bored of that pleasure-- which is of course assuming a god could get bored of such a thing. It makes no sense to willingly subject yourself to suffering, and even less sense to force yourself to forget your god status just so the suffering is 'real'. Because if we are to say that the dream of suffering is "entertaining" due to the percieved removal of our godhood status-- why not just do that for dreams of endless pleasure instead? It's the same situation, just one devoid of needless suffering.
