Do NOT use super glue. It is runny and could run down the axel to where the wheel rides. A small dab of Elmer's or wood glue would work.
Putting tape on cardboard gives you a false sense of the cars alignment
How much does this really help? Any data?
Sorry, but this video is pretty worthless. Doesn't explain how to see if it is being steered by front or rear wheels. Doesn't explain which way to rotate axles if veering left vs. right. Missing so many useful details. He may as well just make a 10 second video telling you to align your car.
Don't Listen to 729pjp He is 100% wrong. Do a little bit of research and you will come to the same conclusion.
Really great video!! Question…..How far into the body do you place your axle/nail…ie spacer guide to insure uniformity?? Thank you
Just polish the wheels with graphite? Any sanding needed on the wheels prior?
Dude.
I went overboard! Went to 3000 grit, then to a leather strap, Flitz metal polish and topped it off with an expensive auto polish. We ended up with about 12 trophies in the 3-4 year span.
I dont understand, can someone please help, i got a derby coming up soon, i bent my 2 back wells 2.5 degrees and then put them on but how is the wheel suppose to rub on nail head when nail is bent, its always going towards the car, the wheel has to go uphill on the nail to rub on nail head, mine seems to stay down by the car body amd rubing there

I think you bent it to close to the nail head. Next time, stick the nail through the wheel...where the nail comes out, mark it with a perm marker. Then bend it from that point. I put it in my drill chuck and spin it against a slow running dremmel tool. Then put the nail in my vice just under the dremmel cut line. Then take a flat head SD and gently tap the cut line a couple times until you have a bent axle.
Nailed it, best video I've seen on this.
Great video. I watched a dozen videos on rail riding, but no one explained it better than you.
Are you bending axels after or before polishing them ? Or you repolosh them after bending
How long before a race would you prep wheels / axles?
Will this also work with HotWheels axles
Great Job!!!!! Check Mikey’s Pinewood Derby th-cam.com/video/2m5HLo3yGFA/w-d-xo.html
This set of videos is the BEST I have view! You did a great job creating them, Thank You. FYI: My son, Eagle Scout and now Scout Master, lived in Ladysmith for 4 years until he moved back to PA.
better to have straight alignment than rail riding.
Says bsa rules prohibit kids under 14 to use power tools. Proceeds to show little kid using power tools. 😂😂😂
It’s not less friction that makes it faster, it’s spinning fewer wheels. It takes energy to spin the wheels. Lift one up, means one less wheel to spin. Friction is proportional to weight, reducing the surface area just puts more weight on less area, and friction remains the same. Fr
You need to look into that cuz that's not at all what it is and yes it to reduce depression by lifting one-wheel fortunes two things rubbing
weight towards the back is a huge mistake, 1 to 1.5 inches from the front axle.
Why is that?
If you don't pay attention, and clearly you're not so far, you're not going to do well.
Are you trying to sabotage other racers? The 3/4” to 1” in front of the rear axle is well documented.
I use a scotch Brite that works well for polish

I like yo video
Don’t bend the axle on scout class just put them in at a angle
What Do You Think About My Trick To Reduce The Friction by 75%? let me know.. :) my wheel was 100% unmodified. th-cam.com/video/OSUW86eAowA/w-d-xo.html
Try this, Test it move you weights here. 75% les friction. The wheels won't stop/break when contacting the side rails. :) th-cam.com/video/OSUW86eAowA/w-d-xo.html
Great video, love the safety tips. And that the video is not about you. And the hand motions, are classic. Like looking into a mirror 😂
Our troop has to have all four wheels on the ground and the wheels have to have 1 3/4" clearance between wheels. Should I just go for straight down the track alignment or still try a rail rider? Also, if I'm cantering the wheels, do I really need to use the wheel spacer tool? How is that tool relevant if I'm cantering the wheels?
Good video, and thank you. Your advice to NOT use a hammer to tap in the nails to the car contradicts other instructions i have heard, such as using a Pro axle guide tool to guide the nail into the wood slot. Different school of thought i guess. If careful, using a hammer WILL work without damaging the wheel! Also if pinewood derby is supposed to be a Kid project mostly then using a hammer to tap in the nails is a great opportunity for the child to participate and do something rather than the dad doing it all. Some videos advise tapping the nail in without the wheel (part of the way) to loosen up the wood then pull the nail out with pliers then later tap in the nail with the wheel for final assembly. Thanks for your video, some useful tips in here.
Thanks for putting this series together! We'll see how it goes!
Not all scout classes have the same rules. My sons pack allows for axle modification.
Derby
It worked!!!........... :D The dislike butoon worked!!
meh
Hi, I found a Q-Tip stem is the perfect thickness to hold a wheel gently in a chuck to softly sand and polish. Who knew! Pinewood derby hacks. You heard it here first! :-)
Stop saying Scout Class rules are this or that, the official BSA rules are very basic. Each Pack and District may have their own rules that differ from the BSA rules so what may be legal for you could be illegal for me. If you don't know just ask!
All of these videos are made specifically for our Pack. So when we refer to "Scout class" we are talking our Packs specific rules...not general rules. :)
