Brian’s Hydro Heaven
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 ธ.ค. 2011
G’day from Australia, my name is Brian Bullock I’m a qualified horticulturist and green keeper by trade. I build low cost hydroponic and aquaponic systems from free recycled materials and pipe to grow fresh healthy vegetables and fruit. I hope by studying these videos you are able to build low cost hydroponic systems and grow food for your family and neighbours.
Everyone should have fresh healthy food at home, I hope to show you how you can grow it.
We also have a Facebook account “PERTH EZE-GROW HYDROPONICS AND AQUAPONICS” if you use that platform.
Happy growing!

Here’s a simple hydroponic system I built and recently sold. Comprising four NFT channels and a simple stand made from 40 mm uPVC irrigation pipe. The reservoir is a 200 litre blue drum cut in half. The pump is an aqua one 103 pump, rated at 1200 litres per hour at 1.2 m head. The yellow flowering tree is a Western Australian Christmas tree, ( nuytsia floribunda). Hi Brian We also live in Perth, are these required to be food grade containers ? Where do you get the containers from ? Thanks
@@WhitneyHoyle g’day, all of these drums are foodgrade at manufacture. HDPE plastic is foodgrade. Just be mindful what the drums contained before using them. Obviously you don’t want to use something that previously held oil or herbicide. I got my latest batch of drums from “ Enviro recycling “ in Malaga, for around $4.00 each. Their phone number is 0424 490 889.

What have you been feeding them?

As always great looking plants!
Thank you. I enjoy getting inspiration through your updates. Blazing hot there!
@@crazyhomemaker g’day there, yes 104f this week.
Hi Brian, do you clean the media with anything or just wash them with water? When it gets hot here in Brisbane we put a frozen 3lt water bottle in the resovoir each morning to try and keep the temps down a bit. Thanks for the video.
@@iain3136 g’day Ian. These expanded clay media was just left spread on the shadecloth for a couple of days and the sprinklers came on and rinsed the clay through during the night. Then we raked the clay and washed it with the garden hose. If needed I would put the clay in containers and fill with water and 3ml of 50% hydrogen peroxide per ten litres and leave them for a few days to sterilise them. But this time I saw no need for that. We, like you add frozen bottles into the reservoir when it’s very hot. Have a great weekend and Christmas.
that good hand tattoo is awesome
What's the number of plants per meter square and averge production of corn . Please?
@@عبداللهمحمدضمرانى plant 12” (30 cm) apart. Two to three corn cobs per plant.
@Brianshydroheaven . Amazing😯 .very thanks
@ you’re welcome
Hi, I would like to start hydroponics. I would like to hopefully have something similar. What solar pump would you recommend pls?
@@BUHAYMOTHER the main things to consider are that the pump must have enough lift to the highest point and also consider that a solar pump will only work when the sun is shining on the panel. It won’t pump at night or on cloudy days. You will find many solar pumps on eBay or Amazon.
I could deal with 1 bean harvest if the rest produces like yours. Great garden! Thanks for sharing.
@@crazyhomemaker 😂 yes I’ve grown climbing beans in my old system outside really successfully, so what’s happened here I’m not sure. Poor pollination maybe 🤔. I’ve never grown scarlet runner beans, the plants were labeled as climbing beans only. Have a great Sunday there.
Where do you buy the channel from in perth
@@djredhareaus38 try Hydroponic Express.
Channels are available at Aquaponics in Canning Vale.
What do you use for your nutrients mate? I am using one part nutrient from Bunnings Manutec 1L Hydroponic Nitro Plus For Leaf And Herb at around 1000ppm and oh around 6.5. Not growing so great and I am thinking about changing the nutrients

Great mate. Where did you get the pop up channels from?
@@Quacka666 I got these from a friendly old man who was downsizing and moving into a nursing home.
I hope you enjoyed your hike. It does look like a jungle, and the plants seem very happy. The beans are weird.
@@glennmccarthy8773 thank you. Yes it was a great break away challenging and arduous. Simply walking every day. Not sure with the beans.
Did you casually say back from a six day hike. Lol
@@Philmoon69 yes, I was hiking the Cape to Cape trail here in Western Australia. ( work avoidance scheme). Back in time to mow the golf course greens tomorrow morning.
I might give this method a go. Once they've germinated and have their first true leaves, do you pull them from and remove the coco perlite mix to place them into the dutch buckets or do you put them in with the coco and perlite mix into clay balls?
@@qpl88 I grow the plants in this media until the plants have three true leaves, then transplant them into the hydroponic systems without taking the media off. I don’t wash the media off the new seedlings as I don’t want to damage the tiny roots. Once the plants are in the hydroponic systems I give them a little water each day for three days until they are established. This prevents transplant shock.
@@Brianshydroheaven thanks for confirming. Do you get any issues with the media making it back into the reservoir and affecting the pump at all?
@ no, the soil plugs mostly stay together for the life of each crop. Some might migrate into the pipes and sit in the bottom of the pipes or into the reservoir, but no issues. Dust and fine material will blow into the reservoir anyway, occasionally I’ll service the pump between crops, take out the impeller and check intakes etc.
Everythings looking good. Strange that the beans haven't flowered considering how lush the plant looks. Are you hand pollinating the cucurbits? I want to create an enclosed area like yours for zucchini and lebanese cucumbers too but wondering how much work it'd be to get them to fruit
@@qpl88 yeah I am not sure what’s happening with the beans. Maybe the plastic cover is blocking too much light for the beans to form, or else they aren’t getting pollinated. We’ve grown beans before, really successfully in full sun in the old systems. The cucurbits are forming without hand pollination ( although I did hand pollinate the first zucchini). I think bees and wasps and other insects are doing the task in here. Some of the cucumbers might not need pollination, perhaps.
interesting about beans. I thought that new covered area was enclosed and didn't let any bugs in.
@ it’s covered but there’s plenty of gaps for bugs to get in, and I’ve the door open and flowers to hopefully bring in bees and other pollinators.
@ it’s an awesome set up and one I’m hoping to be able to do along the house
Been following the new set up Brian I have been using alot of Kratky but we have sold and moving to Hervey Bay Qld with not much of a back yard so I will do some Kratky there and may join a community garden . Yes weird about beans I think you are right direct sun ?
Hey, Brain, the tunnel looks impressive, and the plants are growing immensely.
Thanks you, growing food is saving money, and fresh vegetables are so good.
Nice tour. Re: zucchini...pick the male flower. Peel back the flower to expose the stamen. Rub the stamen into the female flower to.pollenate. I've had to do that with my cukes. You can also use a craft paint brush to rub on the male flower and transfer pollen to the female flower. It should work. I've done it both ways with success. Shame to waste veg. Good luck if you should try!
Yes, I just did the manual pollination on the zucchini as you described. Thank you 🙏 have a great evening there.
Hi Brian, can you tell me how you deal with powdery mildew in a hydro set up? I thought I saw it in one of your videos but I can’t find it if you have already covered it. Thanks for all the info you share.
@@iain3136 g’day iain I spray wettable sulphur every Sunday as a preventative measure. All over and under the foliage til the spray water drips off the plant. Sulphur is an organic treatment. Added to water it becomes sulphuric acid, and burns the fungal mycelium. As the spray is pretty diluted it’s not strong enough to burn the plants but strong enough to burn the fungus and also insects and spider mites.

Looking healthy. How will the tunnel cope with the Perth heat? More fans? Or will it not be a problem?
@@stevedotrsa this will be the first summer with this tunnel house. We built it in March this year. Even then it was hot and we had shadecloth over the top, both ends open and the sides opened up. Over time I’ll make some changes as the weather gets hotter.
@@Brianshydroheaven I've been wanting something similar myself, but was worried about the heat. I'll keep watching to see how it goes. The trampoline shade box is brilliant. Hey Bryan, beautifull plants, how do you manage your nutrient solution? Big hug from Cape Verde!
@@ash9658 g’day Ash, the nutrient solution is in a 200 litre drum, buried behind the garage. I maintain the EC around 1.8 -2.2. If the plants are using lots of water I might need to add water to keep the EC in the ballpark. The nutrient is changed every two to three weeks. I check the pH every day and adjust if needed with a small amount of phosphoric acid, usually the pH rises bit by bit as the nutrient is used by the plants. Best regards to you.
