    i think it will be better to use NaOH to dissolve the CaSO4 it will react to form calcium hydroxide and Sodium sulfate and as it is a soluable salt and calcium hydroxide is insoluable they can be seperated and electrolysis of sodium sulfate with anode and cathode seperated will make h2so4 at anode i also recommend using a unglazed clay pot as membrane it will work better than cotton as it seperates the anode and cathode chembers much better than cotton

    • @ChemistryOnCreatine
      @ChemistryOnCreatine 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I was originally planning using NaOH as well but the thing is caso4 had 2 bonds attaching the ions, I hence figured it would be more stable and harder to split than caoh2 meaning I figured the reaction wouldnt progress well due to caoh2 being pretty unstable compared to caco3 as caco3 has a double bond to its one ion. This I imagined would hinder the equilibrium so I did it this way. In terms of the clay pot as a membrane that’s a good suggestion I might do that in the future

    you should try using pure soda (NaHCO3) instead, 1 mole of it should react with 2 moles of drywall (CaSO4) to yield Na2SO4, CaCO3, water and CO2 gas. the Na2SO4 can then be reacted with either nitric or hydrochloric acid to give Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) none of these reactions are reversible either so less hassle, though i would add more soda than drywall because if there is soda to spare it will just react with hydrochloric or nitric acid in the same way Na2SO4 will and make salt (NaCl) also which country are you living in? if your in the US it should be easy to buy HCl, and if not you can just make it the electrolytic method while making more NaOH which is always useful

    • @ChemistryOnCreatine
      @ChemistryOnCreatine หลายเดือนก่อน

      Probably NaHCO3 would work but because I’ve seen no one do this before I was very cautious with the recipe not experimenting with bicarbonate and instead using carbonate as that’s more known. I’m also very much not sure about HCl reacting with Na2SO4 to make NaCl and that being non reversible. I live in Canada and I do have a bottle of concentrated HCl I bought however I never even thought it could be used to make sulfuric acid

    • @iKuzilize
      @iKuzilize หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ChemistryOnCreatine im testing it out my self now, though you should be able to buy HCl as a mold/molt remover for boats and concret. the reaction i was thinking about goes as follows 2NaHCO3 + CaSO4 -> Na2SO4 + CaCO3 (insoluble) + H2O + CO2 Na2SO4 + 2HCl -> 2NaCl + H2SO4 salt is very chemically stable so for most applications it can just be used as is if you really want to remove the salt without having the equipment to distill sulfuric acid you can boil the solution untill it reaches close to 100% purity (water evaporates but acid does not) which will cause the salt to precipitate out. then the acid can carefully be decanted. you do lose some product but its an expected sacrifice for purity. (DO NOT try to filter it with coffee filters as the acid will react strongly with paper.)

    • @iKuzilize
      @iKuzilize 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ChemistryOnCreatine i can confirm that this method works in making sulfuric acid. though it will be heavily contaminated with NaCl, meaning it needs distillation.

    • @ChemistryOnCreatine
      @ChemistryOnCreatine 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ty this seems like a more efficient method than mine if I want sulfuric acid as a catalyst say for something organic, where the salt contamination doesn’t matter. I sadly do not have a distilator which is capable of handling sulfuric acid distillation as my current one will dissolve if I try this. I’ll need to begin to synthesize organic molecules using the sulfuric acid from this process now

  • @iKuzilize
    @iKuzilize หลายเดือนก่อน

    tips for people sodium hydroxide is VERY reactive with aluminum so make sure that yu dont use an aluminum cup or pot under this process and also sodium hydroxide reacting with aluminum may create dangerous amounts of hydrogen gas depending on the amount of NaOH you have made, and your house may win the next fireworks show. also instead of wasting money on 9V batteries just grab a "broken" charger because they usually are only broken on the port were you put it into the phone because people dont know how to have a lasting charger apparently even though ive used mine for 3 years but oh well.. were was i... oh yeah, cut off the end and strip the 2 wires, the blue/black is negative while red is positive, white is ground, its safety stuff so it aint important. other than that this video is fine

    • @ChemistryOnCreatine
      @ChemistryOnCreatine หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nah i just didn’t have anything to say about the rest in terms of personal experience so I didn’t. Everything you said is true about the NaOH making hydrogen gas in a reaction with aluminum, ultimately making sodium aluminate as well. But yea cutting a wire and using it as a power supply would also work. I heard that’s how people charge vapes, so as far as I can guess that means it gives a stable output of dc voltage. 12 volts as well I think, higher than the battery I used

    • @iKuzilize
      @iKuzilize หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ChemistryOnCreatine ultimately its the amps that do the job but ofc you need sufficient voltage to carry it, a usual phone charger it like 5V at like 2A, but only like 300mA will really go though with the right electrolyte and setup.

    I'm wondering if it wouldn't save some steps just chucking the Bicarbonate and drywall into a blender together for a while and then just throw that on the heat to dehydrate both compounds at once. You can then add water once it has cooled off sufficiently, stir or boil if you want to mix it, let it settle and pour off the supernatant straight into the drain. That way you have a single pot recipe and making much less mess....in the kitchen. Edit: 🤦‍♂️don't discard the supernatant.....that's what we are after. Mah bad.

    • @Killerhurtz
      @Killerhurtz หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wonder if throwing a little water into the mixture desolving the bicarbonate (or sodium carbonate if you have access to that) and have it absorb into the porous calcium sulphate and then boiling off the water which would lead to a more intimate mixing of the 'ingredient' and thus improve either yield or reaction time. The benefit being that this step is practically zero effort and adds very little extra time to the procedure.

    • @ChemistryOnCreatine
      @ChemistryOnCreatine หลายเดือนก่อน

      It could actually, but yet again it could cause problems with heating each of the corresponding ingredients as the temperature would be limited by the water

    • @Killerhurtz
      @Killerhurtz หลายเดือนก่อน

      The water is just to dissolve the (bi)carbonate and get it absorbed into the drywall powder. After which, you would absolutely have to boil off all the water and then continue heating to the requited higher temperatures. Apologies that I wasn't clear on that.
