Farewell to Oregon Fishing
This is my last fishing video for Oregon. Went out to Keizer Rapids Park, Keizer, Oregon.
Took with me a ned rig with Berkley 2.75" 'Lil General and Zman Salty Ned ShrimpZ, Berkley 2.5" tube, Football head 1/4" jig and a 1/4" chatterbait. Ned rig did the trick. But I 'swam' it, to keep it off the algae caked bottom, with little jerks.
Last part of the video are some clips of my 3 years fishing the Salem area.
See you in Illinois!!

Exploring up the Algae River (Willamette)
มุมมอง 167หลายเดือนก่อน
Launched off at West Salem, Wallace Marine Park, to see if I can find clear enough water to cast a line without snagging up a pound of algae at the end of my hook. Decided to go exploring and see just how far upriver I can go. Surprisingly, I got pretty far. I stayed on the east bank and an island kept most of the fast current away. I then spied a small slough on the west bank, and I had to try...

Blue Heron finds a way to get around the thick disastrous weeds at Mission Lake. This lake is just not what it used to be. May of last year was the last time it even looked like it was still alive. @Bryanslure 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am planning on going there today. PLANNING is the key word, LOL. Though the rocks are productive, the largest catches I got in the area is just past the rapids down river from the launch at an eddy located where the Willamette 'elbows'. Also up river sometimes, past the launch around the bend, beyond the rocky bank, by the power lines in the small rapids I caught a few times 2lb pounders. I sometimes float down river just past the rapids and then walk the bank with kayak in tow to get back home. Don't go past the white rocks. That is the point of no return. Current too swift to get back and the next launch is at Mission State Park.

    • @Bryanslure
      @Bryanslure 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn't count out Mission during the spring, before May. But, not sure 4lb plus size fish can survive there anymore. Plenty of food, but large fish can't hunt because they can't move. It is that bad. The boat launch is so overgrown now you have a narrow 3' wide alley to get a kayak in the water.

  • @TygerByte
    @TygerByte 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks for sharing. It's good to see bass fishing videos up here. BTW, if your gopro overheats, I've found it works well to use a usb battery pack plugged directly into the gopro w/o a battery inserted. The inserted battery itself generates so much heat.

    • @Bryanslure
      @Bryanslure 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I made a video with that idea exactly. Doesn't work. The GoPro12 got too sophisticated for outdoor use. With external battery only, it overheated in 14 minutes 8 seconds (one video recording before shutdown). So I can't leave it on until I catch something. You also have to make sure the battery puts out 2 amps (I found out the hard way, had to buy 2 batteries). The older models don't have so much sophistication so background software isn't overheating the CPU and you can use them for fishing. Out of the sun or early morning the 12 is fine. Thank you so much for the positive comment. My whole reason for making videos is to help locals find a place to fish for bass. I don't hide my locations, go to private areas and I tell you exactly what I'm using and where. Though most of the time I have no idea what I'm doing, if I find a lure that works and where it worked, I make sure to show it. I figure most bass anglers practice catch and release, and bass technically shouldn't be here, so I'm not too concerned the area will be 'fished out'.

      That does look like a nice pond. Appears to have a fair amount of bank access. Too small for watercraft possibly? If even allowed. There is a pond in Aumsville off of Bates Road that I looked at a few years back. Banks not as good as Lyons, but possibly fishy. I looked at it last summer, and it looked more like a public swimming pool. No cover, lay downs, and I doubt much structure. Extremely busy place and Turner doesn't care about limits so bass population probably really low and small. I have not seen any water in Oregon that manages bass water very well, if at all. I don't blame them, bass are not indigenous to Oregon so why should they? Though I miss the largemouth, driving to Turner and trying to find them doesn't sound as appealing as going 5 minutes from my home to Keizer Rapids and catch smallmouth, and there is a better illusion that your outdoors at Keizer Rapids. With Mission now totally dead, largemouth waters are Halls Ferry (small chance but I went twice and caught a largemouth both times), and Cascade Gateway (better chance not bank fishing, and assuming the homeless haven't taken it over again).

    That's a bummer. I bought a 26800 mAh battery on Amazon. It has both a 1A and a 2A port. I put it in a dry bag and that has worked quite well. I use that with a gopro 9 (or 8 I can't remember)

    • @Bryanslure
      @Bryanslure 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I got a battery coming from Best Buy, pumps out 3.3 amps. The only one I could see that actually says it puts out at least 2 amps. I did a search on Amazon and found that GoPro battery, said it was compatible with the 12, so I thought I was safe. Many batteries talk about the wattage and how many hours, few mention the amperage. The power cables as well, but it looked like fast charge cords are USUALLY 2a. I still made sure it was in writing. Since my kayak has a storage drawer under the seat, water is not an issue. Already tested my AKASO on Monday using the GoPro battery as well as my kayak battery. Both ways work great, just very little audio and my camera pole isn't very tall (yours must be taller to get the angle you have). I can't use the head mount style while plugged into the kayak though. It is both strange, and pleasing, to not have to worry about changing batteries.

      It's not too bad in my section of the Willamette. Portland (especially around Ross Island) is contaminated with toxic algae. Salem area Willamette has a lot of loose weeds floating around which hinders a lot of open hook type fishing (cranks, wacky, drop shot, etc.) but probably because its relatively shallow around here with an average, I would say, of 10 feet. But considering the disastrous condition the Willamette was in before the late 60's early 70's, it has healed quite well with the efforts of Oregonians. Instead of the raw sewage and toxic chemicals back then, we have algae explosion due to industry rerouting the river, and global warming, to deal with now. Thanks to the great Oregon State University, a plan is made, and we'll clean that up too.

I have not gone this year because there was a fallen tree blocking my way under the footbridge to get to the area around Homestead road. I know there is a way to get into the ponds from homestead, however my kayak is too heavy to get there and around/over the tree falls. Last year, I did catch a largemouth in the slough area between the footbridge and the river, it was around two pounds, deep into those reed type weeds.

    Thanks for warning people about the current. If you happened to fall into the water where that undercurrent is, would a life jacket keep you afloat or would you go under?

    • @Bryanslure
      @Bryanslure 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Speaking only from experience, any jacket will help, if you wear it properly and have a type that will balance your body. The inflatable type would be best, but the current here at Keizer Rapids is not so bad, so a low level jacket that I use should be sufficient. The second body found at the park, I later found out, actually floated down from Independence.

      I only go there when I can't go to Willamette Mission State Park. Homeless camps are returning and the highway noise is annoying. hey Bryan just started bass fishing I live near woodburn, any bank access spots you’d recommend for bass? thanks! :)

    • @Bryanslure
      @Bryanslure 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bank access is not the best around here is it? But don't worry, I have some. The first is St. Louis Ponds right alongside I5. South of Woodburn closer to you then me. Go south on Portland Rd (99E). In Gervais turn right at the Douglas Rd/Mt Angel intersection. Douglas Rd changes to St. Louis Rd once you leave Gervais. Cross over I5 make those two turns and just before the railroad tracks there is a road to your left. This is the access road to the ponds. AjFishing on TH-cam just released a video catching a bass there (Spring Bass Fishing 2024). Southeast Salem there is also Cascade Gateway alongside I5 off the Mission Rd exit (I have a Google Maps video on its location "Mission Lake is Dead"). When the Willamette goes down for the summer, Willamette Mission State Park boat ramp. The access road to it is just to the right before the Wheatland Ferry. There is a gravel bank right of the ramp and the trail to access that is to the right of the road leading to the ramp at the parking lot. Also, Halls Ferry I'm told has bank fishing ability when the river is down. A tiny State Park at Grand Island just on the other side of the Willamette River from Willamette Mission State Park, take the Ferry it would be easiest (Google map that one I have no video of it just yet, look just North of Wheatland Ferry on the West side along that island and the park will pop up). I fished there a couple weeks ago to test kayak access, but bank fishing looked really good. Though I caught nothing, plenty of minnow small mouth kept hitting my lure. I'm looking into Petit Reservoir in Silverton but it doesn't look good. Silverton just bought the area from the astronaut and not sure if they will continue to allow bank fishing there. I plan on calling the parks department in Silverton asking what the plans are. I will post a video this summer (hopefully), or you can call yourself (google map location is just south of Oregon Garden off of cascade highway).

      Isaak was my second guess, LOL. I wanted to fish more, but my spirits were 'dampened' thinking about trying to get up that slope in the mud. I wanted to sit right on the edge of the main river and the slough. I am serious about the lure, you tell me what you want. You gave me a good tip of where to go. Tacklewarehouse.com or basspro.com. My email is fourezbryan@gmail.com I was thinking about using the park on the other side of the river, Mark Lloyd park. Use the current to get to the slough, then come out at the narrow southern inlet of the slough and take the current back to Mark Lloyd. If the parking and river access looks ok that is. When the river calms down, I will definitely go that route.
