SOTA Mountain Biking, Rock Scrambling and QMX AX-1 CW OPS
Had an incredible day on Burnt Mountain (W6/CT-217), combining mountain biking, hiking, rock scrambling, and operating CW (Morse code). This was my first time pairing the QMX 60-15M transceiver with the Elecraft AX-1 antenna, and it was a thrilling experiment! The combo performed better than expected, and every moment was as challenging as it was rewarding. I hope you enjoy the adventure and excitement as much as I did-it was definitely an adventure to remember!

Toughest SPOTA Summit Yet

Orosco Ridge W6/SC-440, nestled in the heart of Cleveland National Forest, called to me for a real adventure, and I was eager to answer. However, a gate closure at the parking lot meant I had to get creative. Instead of wallking all the way to the trailhead, I grabbed my mountain bike for a challenging ride to the summit's base. The single-speed bike ride was tough, especially with the relentle...

Yesterday's plan was to activate both SOTA Orosco Ridge W6/SC-440 and POTA Cleveland National Forest US-4454. Gate and road access was closed due to Arroyo Toad monitoring. I pedaled my 29er single speed onto a different trail into Cleveland National Forest US-4454 for a fantastic POTA activation. Unfor...

thanks, great video thanks for sharing this fantastic video 73 from kb2uew
Another great video dude ... quote of the day "I'm om the summit, don't steal my stuff!" ... the over drone shot is a nice touch.
😂 yep “ on the summit pls don’t steal my stuff” TNX for watching !
Great job and great bunch of contacts on 5watts!!! Way to go! I’ll be listening for you!!! Mike KK7MMN
TNX Mike !!! Appreciate the words! Will have more videos in the coming weeks .
Way to go Doug!! Great aerial footage from that drone. And amazing how you could talk to Japan on 5watts (and all over USA)!!! I love my QMX too!!! Mike KK7MMN
TNX Mike! QMX is my favorite QRP rig for its features and light weight design. The AX-1 performed better than I expected and was a great combo with the QMX.
Doug, you know I'm loving some SOTA "Ham on a Bike". I've done the same with my bike on a couple of POTA activations where bikes or dogs weren't allowed in the park As always, thanks for sharing your experiences .
Absolutely Jim!!! I just bought a great used geared bike , Trek Stache 5. Planning more SOTA / POTA activities . Stay tuned
loving the B roll and drone shots, thanks for all the extra work in filming that!.
TNX! Absolutely 👍🏻 !
Outstanding Doug, thanks for showing the AX-1with the QMX! 72 de KO4AYC
No problem! Plan on adding additional counterpoises to see if there are any differences in performance. AX-1 got the job done.
AWSOME ! ! !
TNX. It was a great adventure by mixing other activities with portable ops
Excellent video, Dugbo! Fun to watch! TU 72 ee
Glad you enjoyed the video. And was such a fun activation.
Holy smokes, this is awesome. Thanks for the intel! So tired of wrestling with a headless Raspberry Pi to try and do this portable. iPad might get the job done easy with the QMX.
Works well with the iPad using lightning connector. I just updated to iPhone 16 and the USB-C works great too.
I wonder if this really works because I am trying right now with the same setup and cant make a contact using my base station antenna. Decodes fine but cant make a contact! the 4.6 watts my LP-100 shows coming out of the QMX should be enough
I have approximately the same wattage , ~4.5 watts. I have made contacts both on summit and QTH . You have TX watts of 4.6 so I am assuming you turned on VOX under digi interface menu. Keep me updated .
@@dugbohamradio The VOX is turned on because I am getting signal out because I can see the wattage in my Watt meter but no contacts. I am going to test today having a shortwave radio next by so I can hear the transmission and be 200% sure that is coming out. I am using a DX Commander with my Palstar tuner at 1.0 SWR. Ive tried putting an amplifier at the end but for some reason when the QMX (or the app) detects an AMP in line it stops transmitting (weird, or some sort of protection)
@ you might want to turn of SWR protection if your antenna is resonant. I have to turn off my SWR protection bc sometimes it triggers and stops transmitting signal. QMX has some quirks .
@@dugbohamradio good call, I didnt know I can turn that off. Yes, ill try to turn it off, that way I can probably use an amp to confirm if I can get out. Thanks!
Man, that trek looked rough...but worth it!
It definitely was. It took me a few days to recovery from this adventure. This was the 3rd attempt and finally made it .
@@dugbohamradio Glad you got it done!
What view! Gotta be tough with no shade. Good work,!
Great vistas from Orosco Ridge. I picked up some new outwear for sun protection. Sharing that in the next video coming out soon.
Great hike Doug. Some day I hope to keep up with your copy speeds! Your videos are continually great encouragement. Love your editing style...
😊 TNX! Before you know it you will be copying at 22 WPM . Keep at it !
always awesome Doug!
Thanks Ed!!! Appreciate you watching .
Just made an old earpiece and mic from a phone into a diy interface it's simple. George
Nice QMX video!
It is a perfect lightweight radio for this POTA adventure!
Don’t have a QMX yet but just did my first POTA activation last weekend. It was the same weekend as CQWW SSB contest so I wanted to avoid SSB besides a little hunting. I stuck mostly with FT8 and used the iFTx app and it was awesome. I made about 118 contacts running 30W into an EFHW across the country and a good bit of DX too. I’m thinking that newer iPhones may even be less clunky to hook up since they’ve switched to USB C from lightning.
Incredible amount contacts on FT8 with DX. Nice Work!!! I just upgraded the my iPhone to a 16Pro and the IFTX app along with a small USB-C connector worked flawlessly. No issues.
@@dugbohamradio thanks good to know the USB C will work. The QMX is on my radar. A TP-3 portable paddle is probably next on my list. Working to get into CW ops. Still building proficiency. Have started to hunt with CW but use macros for sending to be efficient.
Dude I went to the SKCC sked last night for the first time ever. Posted a spot and before I knew it I had 5 numbers including Australia and Japan. Awesome!
Dude that is fantastic !!! Posting a sked is perfect right now with all the great band conditions we are having . I was on a summit and park yesterday .You were on 15m but too faint . I had leave due to an epic hike and ride down the summit .
I'll look up the video you referred to. I got bit by the ham bug after years of being out of it. Nice TS-520 in the background. I sold mine back when so I've been looking at QMX
Nice and welcome back to a great time to be in the hobby. The TS-520 is a great rig! Mine is the TS-830 with narrow cw filtering . Definitely build a QMX, I have built the 20-10M and just recently built the 60-15M .
Thanks. Does qrp Labs have all those bands in one rig, and if so is it better to build 2 units? (Less compromises for instance)
@@oxynimrod At the time , QRP labs had a high band (20-10M) and low band (80- 20M) . I went with high band . Then Hans released the 60-15M which I think is the best option for low and high band combo. Yes you will have all those bands. I have 60, 40, 30, 20 and 15m in one transceiver which is great for SOTA and POTA operations .
One of the great things I love about HAM radio...is that everything I watch...shows that I HAVE SO MUCH TO LEARN...and just about everybody I meet in the hobby shares the same sentiment. It's an endless learning experience...QRS..QRS... ;)
You said it! It's a lifetime of learning. 😁
I think of SOTA as extreme POTA! 😂
😆 totally agree with that statement
Love the videos, Dugbo! I would love to see all the “extra cuts”…so we can see all the work you truly put into making your videos. 😉 (Hi to Isabella!)
That is a great idea! I have all that extra footage of walking and riding back and forth to get a shot. Hi back from Bella
Hey Doug, I would enjoy seeing you do a video (or part of a video) with you using your AX1 ANT and the QMX. 73 de Gordon
Absolutely Gordon. I ll setup both the AX-1 and EFHW.
@@dugbohamradio I look forward to seeing them together Doug! 73 de Gordon
I had that same thing happen where I scheduled a SOTA and didn’t work out. Setup in the National Forest and a S2S came to me I felt really bad haha 😂. Great to get you in the log today. Killer vid! Love the 29er and the loadout. QMX mid-band rocks. +bamatech and M5 rock too. 73 om
Not only did I feel bad for SOTA chasers I was frustrated I couldn't get to he summit easily. this is the 2nd time I have been denied this summit. Plan is to change the cog on the mountain bike for the ascent up the road to the summit trailhead and get this summit in the books before the end of daylight savings. QMX mid band is the Bomb and is the perfect radio for my 40-10 EFHW.
Hope you are able to get back to Orosco Ridge. Thanks for the copy practice and great scenery! 73, KF4LMZ
The plan is try again before the end of daylight savings.ETA is NOV 1st.
Hey DUBGO thanks for posting your video link to Discord. I didn't know you had a channel. I subscribed. I sometimes activate on my motorcycle! QRP Life 😆 72 from KM3STU
Fantastic STU! I would be great to see your QRP life on a motorcycle at POTA
I like the views and the cycling on the trail. Good job on the activation, Dugbo!
It was a fantastic ride, great views, and a nice day for a POTA activation! Definitely doing this more often - TNX Save
Great video, Dugbo. I've been meaning to spot 2m cw with my ft-818nd while on summit and see if I can get some action. Havent done it yet, but will. Activity begats activity. Glad to see someone else interested. 73 es cu on the air! K4FR
2M CW is tough but I am determined to give it a try every time I am on a summit. Looking forward to seeing the FT-818 making 2M CW QSOs
What tarp are you using for this? It looks like holds up well on the wind.
I am using a 10x7 Aquaquest tarp. Really liking the durability of this tarp. a.co/d/bvwGXGj
W2AEW's channel is a goldmine! Good luck on the build! 73, KF4LMZ
Agree!!! Is the mother load!
Fb advice
Those toroids are wound beautifully!
Definitely a better way to control and wind the toroid nice and tight with magnetic wire
Thanks Doug!!!
You bet!
Beautiful spot, even better with the sunset in the background! Have you made any CW QSO's with the K6? I've called but never made any contacts. I suspect there's not much 2M CW activity.
It was a fantastic sunset and hike down the summit. I have one K6 SOTA CW 2M QSO in the log. 2M CW is tough but I will continue to try. Also have to figure out the YAGI, however this summit's elevation was lower than the repeater location.
No demonstration
Posted a demo video . TNX for watching.
FB QSO! Haha and that’s when I said thanks for the QSL card 😂. You might have the best card out there
Roger that! And FB!
Will keep this in mind when I get the kit. Thanks!
Any time! The pro tip came from W2AEW YT channel - 10 year old video th-cam.com/video/a8ViWS61hsU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Bcg1Sr7GU0jnI0qa
Nice tip! I built a QCX mini 20m and it can be tedious to wind them.
I saw this pro tip on W2AEW YT channel from 10 years ago: th-cam.com/video/a8ViWS61hsU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Bcg1Sr7GU0jnI0qa
Nice tarp! stay hydrated
This tarp has saved me on multiple summits this hot summer . Best accessory I add to my portable kit.
Yeah buddy love the tip. Mid-band QMX rocks. I just ordered a QMX+ for the shack that’ll be a fun build. 73 om
Cw is the best. 73 zl3xdj
Agree 100%
This radio was my first venture into QRP operating. Had both filters, as a combo installed W4RT, and it works great. I’m 77 now so it just sits on the shelf but I take it down and make contacts every month or so, love. Good video and love the location. WD4DDA 73
I’m impressed with the 703. Simple menu, great TX and RX , and just an all round fun classic QRP radio. TNX for watching .
Great video, nice drone footage and desert treatment! Came here from your QRZ page and love the pics there too. Also, thanks for the QSO today on 20m.
🤩 Thanks for stopping by!! You bet ! And thanks for the QSO on 20m as well. I just installed a win key on the TS-830s so I could use a paddle instead of a SK.
Nice way to make it more versatile! I have an old Heathkit that I'm restoring, I think I'll do the same on that
Probably my favorite field key
Great activation, Dugbo. That's for taking us along. 73
Anytime! TNX for coming along.
Playing radio on the tailgate of a classic LS powered Land Cruiser.....it don't get much better than that! 73, KF4LMZ
Very true. Two Classics hanging out together, a Land Cruiser and a ICOM 703.
That paddle and radio make a beautiful combo!
You are so right about the combo of the ICOM 703 and N0SA TPa!
You guys brain is working like an octopus 💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪!
Fb N0SA paddle !
N0SA TPa was a fantastic find, love this key.
