Alabo Peterside (1918 - 2016) was relentless in what he saw as his mission to protect Opobo’s political, ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic identity. For this reason, he articulated the kingdom’s interests at national, state and local levels. In the quest to promote the Opobo Kingdom’s rich cultural heritage, in the early 1980s, he elevated Opobo’s music, song and dances to an art form ...

My community in Imo State has cultural affinity with the opobos . My family till date can't marry from some families in opobo due relationship. We are the only community that plays this particular genre of music ( Ekwette) . The uniqueness of the pots with circled rafts beneath , filled with water . Our fathers tying plain George and our sisters who are married outside and still unmarried are the ones permitted to dance . Women married in our village don't participate. I remember asking one Peterside lady out but when she informed me that she is from opobo , i became careful not to mistakenly go down with a relative . Finally we discovered that our greats were related . My uncle who still connects is named opurubo
