I Take the Corvair on its Longest Drive on the Highway
มุมมอง 95หลายเดือนก่อน
I’ve never driven my Corvair more than a mile or two on the highway. But today, I attended a car show in Simpsonville, SC and I-85 to I-385 was the fastest way to get there. The car ran quite well at a sustained 70 to 75 mph. This bodes well for bringing her to Springfest in Hellen, GA. #automobile #chevy #corvair #classiccars #freeway #highway

Seriously, CLEAN the terminals Al!!!! Bet you’ll get more than 13.96 volts then.
I'm still struggling with my belt replacement, I feel I tried just about everything.
Sorry to hear that. What’s got you stuck?
@@bigalsgarage9323 I took me three days spending about 40 minutes each to be able to mount the belt on to all the pulleys. I did the A/C last and that did the trick. Thanks for the reply.
you need a better mic, but you already know that, sorry
Said the man, “rust never sleeps.”
Rust and Corvairs...something I'm all too familiar with. Good luck with the repairs.
IMHO you are not Fixing the problem with bondo just covering up the damage. After I do body work I also use Rustoleum rust convertor and flood the area inside I put it in a cheap spray bottle or brush it on from the inside. Im enjoying your channel
Good advice.
Cut that plastic squeegee to what ever size you want it makes it easier. I’ve even cut mine into the shapes for easier application
What year is that car? 😮
@@DeePatrice-r1h she’s a ‘65
If that death rattle only happens at cold start on cold day, you're fine. But if it happens every time you start it up, you're fixin to get stranded out in the middle of the street.
Only seems to happen on cold start.
@@bigalsgarage9323 Then you are fine. Don't forget if it happens at every start you have to get it fixed pronto.
I heard the dreaded VVT-i cam gear rattle on startup. Only a matter of time before that gear grenades and damages the engine. Probably time to get rid of the Corolla if you don't want to invest the money to replace the gear.
@@rayemanuel7460 it’s definitely time. The car gave me 260,000 miles of good service so it doesn’t owe me anything.
Not necessarily true. There are reports of these engines still going 100s of thousands of miles more even with the rattle. These are great cars and engines and worth fixing if you want to. I wish I could buy this guy's car.
What gears do you have ?? I have 3:55 and around 60mph I’m running 3k rpm’s.
The veterans get tossed to the side. While the crooked politicians get all the glory and benefits. The politicians owe their jobs to the veterans Cause if the they didn’t fight for our freedom those politicians would be shot and out of power if we ever lost a war. Thank a veteran Great video thank you
I’m rewatching this because I did finally install my secondaries, and it runs like crap now! I’m going to check timing and re sync the carbs.
Dirty/rusty fuel tank is my bet. Clogged the carb idle circuits (smallest orifices) add a large fuel filter run the tank out and fix rust issue. oh and you should have filters in the carbs also
is this a video on how not to do this? oy
Going down that long lonesome highway…
Yes, c'mon back.
Sounds good, what kind of mufflers are you running ? And what kind of lights ? Thanks.
@@SpeedyG289 mufflers, I honestly don’t know. They came with the car. The headlights are Sylvania halogen.
Solution Found- Oh, buddy- you ARE my younger self! I grew up with 1960’s GM cars. I’m a boomer whose first car was an old ‘61 Monza when I was a senior in high school. -Drove used Corvairs in college, and had a few more as a young adult. I’ve owned my current 1967 500 coupe since 1988. Those @$*%ç&! SPRINGS have made me a raving lunatic hundreds of times. Recently I went through the exact same lightbulb search, and bought the same bulbs. Avoided the job all summer. Well- Today, I actually opened the Corvair shop manual I bought decades ago. Wouldn’t you know- the correct method was in there the whole time on my bookshelf -With illustrations!! Guess what? There’s an order to it: 1- REMOVE SPRING. 2- remove screws. 3- remove ring. 4. Unplug bulb, then 5- replace it. 6. Reverse order, attaching spring last. (1965 Corvair Chassis Shop Manual- Section 12, pp. 4 & 5) *Now- I will tell you that the shop manual picture shows the guy using a spring remover. I looked it up- it’s a tool used for headlight and brake springs. Summit Racing has them for less than ten bucks. I happen to live FIVE MINUTES from their Ohio store. I’ll go buy that special T-shaped hook before I even pick up my Phillips screwdriver tomorrow morning! I have fought those springs for decades using needle-nose pliers. It’s a thankless task that encourages you to learn new cuss words. -I HAD the manual the whole time… Don’t be an idiot like me. Get the T-shaped spring remover and you will live a happier, healthier life. Oh, and get a shop manual. Tomorrow I’m going to install those bulbs, drive it around a little, then will get ready to put the poor thing away for the winter. Headlights will be ON! After that I plan to kick myself several times for not opening a book. Duh! 😂
I realize this is far after the fact, but if there is gas in the tank, pull the line off of the tank outlet. if you got a steady flow of gas then its not the tank. I hope you didn't take out the tank, its a pain in the butt!!! mostly from the fill neck. oh yeah, ditch the mechanical fuel pump, when the car is hot you can get vapor lock, not fun. go with an electric fuel pump, you can also put a switch on it, another anti theft method, it saved my ass when some guy tried to steal my car. the guy got over the hill, around the corner and ran out of gas. I bet he was pissed. 65 140 Corsa mike I like your channel keep up the good work!!!
@@mkepler5861 I had good flow out of the sending unit. A rubber line was linked and a replacement gas cap was causing a vacuum in the tank. Untimely, I switched to an electric pump and the car runs great now.
I'm glad you made it without tipping over! 😄 I owned Corvairs as my first two cars in the mid 70s. A 61 and then a 65. I got my first experiences with bondo and with working on an engine from underneath the car. Frankly I was not sad to move on from them, but it would be fun to drive one today.
You weren’t too far from where we live! Swing by sometime if you’d like
I definitely will sometime. Do you still need that rear grill for your Corvair?
@@bigalsgarage9323 Sure!
Do you run a lead additive in the fuel or just unleaded gas. I used to use mystery oil in mine With the gas on the long highway runs
I just run unleaded 93. The general consensus among Corvair guys is lead substitutes aren’t necessary.
sorry, but this is a terrible video!!! if you can't show the car, you driving the car or something more that the scenery of you driving down a road, don't bother. anyone that watched all this video must me a retarded.
Glad you got that fuel problem fixed. Looks like it’s running pretty good now
painful to watch..... and I skipped through it.. you would have done better with a roller
I think you do oke keep up the good work my fiend
When we have nothing else to do.
Like the Chernobyl quote, great mini series HBO did
How did you fix that broken piece which fall down?
That was a whole separate video.
Thumbs up on the video for your effort. I don't think anyone will ever say that $12 was money well spent. 😉
Painful to watch
stick to your day job
I bet your neighbors loved you, lol.
We actually get along pretty well. I’ve helped a few of them with their cars.
@@bigalsgarage9323 Cool, mine not so much, but I did a lot of resprays in my garage.
this is why they need to offer the turbo can in colors, would have sprayed the hood in like 2 minutes without the tiger striping. Going to paint the roof of my black corolla white to see if it can cool it off some in the summer.
I agree. Rustoleum is really missing an opportunity with the turbo cans. I did my Corvair’s deck lid with one.
Exact Color matching on the turbo cans will be an issue.everything is not always as simple as it sounds.support professionals instead
Looks a lot better whatca talkin bout?
Why didn't you just take the hood off? Also, if you used/rented/borrowed a palm or radial sander, you would saved yourself a lot of time and back & arm pain.
That would’ve been the correct way to do this. But this whole thing was rather spur of the moment. My kids wanted to ride their bikes in the cul de sac so I thought, why not. When 8 repaint the Corvair’s hood, I will do exactly what you suggest.
@@bigalsgarage9323 i figured that out when I saw you didn't fully sand it down to bare metal and primer it. Watching the overspray blow all over your windshield, mirrors, and roof was also telling. Lol. Still, thanks for doing the video of a down & dirty paint job.
Thanks for taking us on your drive. I took my 65 out just yesterday and your engine sounds exactly like mine. Funny how there's always a slow driver to get in the way when you're out having fun. Keep up the good work. Lots of us out here enjoy your videos.
Gotta love a nice ride in the Corvair with the kids. They grow up fast so enjoy them
@@sirmister4411 they really do. My nine-year-old is already talking about driving the Corvair to prom!
Are you planing on any more parts refurbishment videos?
@@robertsimmons1716 not right now. All I have are more engine covers so it would be more of the same. The problem I’m having with selling the parts is the shipping.
That’s dope, got an 09’ too pushing 314k miles
note to self, when working on the car, try to be as comfortable as possible. bad video. yeah, I would have moved the car back a bit. you will have to show us the before and after or at least how they look afterwards. because the way you showed us is B.S. or C.S. and the C standing for Chicken. mike
Love to see how bright it is. Even better a before and after maybe against a wall. Too late for that I’m guessing.
