Do UX Designers Need to Know How to Draw?
I think the first portfolio has a very edgy branding. But when you go inside the case study, the tone feels very... opposite of that. I was half expecting to see very experimental art projects or something.
Thanks a lot for your useful tips!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for your video, 🎉 it’s a significant contribution for us. I would like to see a video about UX juniors without experience and what we need to include in our portfolio to enter the field. Is it better to have a fictional case study or to redesign an existing app based on market research and user reviews from marketplaces or the App Store?
Thanks for watching! I think having both types of projects (fictional and redesigns) would teach you something different and if you follow the UX design process in both cases you should have solid portfolio pieces.
@@gytismarkux Thanks, that’s awesome having your answer. 🤩💙
How do I send my portfolio to review?
Just leave your portfolio link in the comments
when we create a project to our portfolio, do we need to design full pages or only important pages enough?
Great question. Depends on the size of the project. For small projects like websites or app flow, I would show all pages. For bigger projects, I would focus on the most impactful feature/flow, and add description, visuals showing the scope of the entire project as well. The sad reallity of long projects is that it is impossible to show all that you have done, unless you would split it into multipe projects. Which just doesn't look that good on the portfolio.
@@gytismarkux thank you very much
I am so glad you're so honest in your reviews! Please make more of those series, I will be building portfolio soon, and this content is just pure gold for me. Thanks for your high efforts! 🤗
Hey, thanks! I am really glad my content is helpful. I plan to create more videos around creating a portfolio, because I see that it is a big issue for junior-mid designers. Honestly, it is a struggle for senior designers as well :D
The [at] and [dot] are to prevent web-scraping bots from spamming the personal email. It's a pretty common practice
Was not aware of this. Thanks for sharing this. Even though that makes sense, I would consider putting user above the bots and make sure user finds it easy. Any extra step that you put in front of the user is extra reason for them to leave your site. I have seen users leave sites for less than that. Every detail matters.
You really tried to work around just saying "plain ugly" in the first case. But it exactly what it is. Going against design principles for no reason will not get anyone the good kind of attention. There is a great spectrum of subjective preferences (colors, shapes, fonts, old/modern/corporate styles, etc), but most of the design work requires a lot of discipline and complying with rules, and the first portfolio fails exactly at that, the objective part. And when you fail at the basis, very few people will make the leap to actually spend more time with your design. You just scare off most.
It is very tricky to create a portfolio that is somehow unique to you while also checking all the boxes. You want to appear professional, trustworthy etc while also keeping some of your perspective and personality. Made a lot of mistakes myself. The only way to get it right is to test it. Ask your potential clients or someone from the target audience share their view of what they are looking for. That can be very eye opening.
Also, I try to avoid words like "ugly" or "beutiful". It would only represent my personal taste, and the goal of a portfolio is to appeal to a wider target audience. As you said, it is much more useful to focus on the core of your work, making it follow the best practices.
Thank you very much for sharing Gytis! 🙏
Thank you for watching
"If I create my portfolio in Notion, will it be good? If not, which website should I use to create my portfolio?"
Notion is not the best tool for creating great portfolio. It may be better than behance but not as good as having a dedicated website. If you have no front-end experience, I would suggest a simple web builder platform like squarespace or wix. Let me know if I can help in any other way?
@@gytismarkux What about a Figma portfolio?
@@gytismarkux Thanks for your help!
@@Skytree8020 Same with Figma. The goal is to make the review of your portfolio as quick as possible. Figma usually takes to load, it will not act as a website, and feel differently. Overall I think it does not provide the experience the reqruiter is expecting to get.
Loved the reminder to add CTA👍
It is very simple but very important!

Hey just subbed been enjoying the videos! Quick question about resumes that I don’t see much content regarding. Do you believe soft skills carry much weight when applying for jobs? For example I’m in the midst of a career change but I have developed a bunch of skills that carry over. For example collaboration, seeing projects from conception to completion, speaking on panels and pitching ideas for budgeting etc. am I overvaluing these skills? Or would they help me stand out as a junior applying? Thanks in advance!
Hey, thanks for subscribing! I appreciate it very much. I have thought about this many times and plan to do a video on transferable skills and how to market them. Let me know if that would be interesting and what would be useful for you. Back to your question. Most soft skills can be transferred to UX or Product design. You just need to think about how you will pivot them. That said, in my experience, soft skills are hard to market in your portfolio. But you can definitely talk about them during your interview and use them on the actual job. I think that your experience in a specific industry is the most valuable. If you, for example, worked as a car salesman, you should have inside knowledge about the automotive industry and sales. This is where I would focus my efforts. Try to mention this on your About page, in case studies, or even in the main header. Building apps for the automotive or sales industry could be very attractive with your inside knowledge of that field. I hope that this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy to help.
@@gytismarkux thank you for the response, yes a video like this would be helpful!

I think its very telling with the second portfolio that this has probably been designed for Behance. Its just one big massive image, so not exactly flying the flag for good UX and accessibility in their design approach. The "Thanks for viewing" is another common theme in Behance case studies. His case study is also peppered with bad grammar. So yeah, its not exactly grabbing me. But its a great example (in my opinion) of what to avoid). - Pas tave naujokas, bet turinys super! Dėkius 👍
That could very much be the case about reusing assets from Behance. Sometimes we get lazy, especially after redesigning our portfolio one too many times. That results in grammar mistakes and portfolio assets from other places like Behance. I am guilty of using a fair amount of these "shortcuts" myself. It is very unprofessional, but it happens all the time. Ačiū, kad žiūri ir palaikai! :)
It's such a good sharing for me.. I hope you will do Another content for entry level or junior designer too .. like how can we create our first portfolio, case study while we don't have any real world projects. Thanks a lot^^
Thanks a lot for your feedback, it really helps to know that my content brings value! I have a few related videos in the pipeline. Stay tuned :)
I love how you just got straight into the video!! Caught me by surprise honestly (instantly subbed). Thanks for the insights
nobody has time for long intros, right? :D
How to I break out from a Ui designer to product designer
Great question. First, you need to identify what skills you need to acquire in addition to your UI skills. You can learn about specific skills required in a product design job posting. From there you need to figure out how to get those skills (via an online course for example). Then you need to start putting the skills to use through client or free work to build your product design portfolio. Then you need to apply until you land the job you want.
@@gytismarkux thanks
I am UX Designer having the experience of 3 years in design industry and I never expected a 10+ years old designer to develop his portfolio like this, I mean no projects there, just the JPGs... Seriously?????? I am talking about the portfolio of "Kris".
I notice a tendency for more experienced professionals to skip more conventional ways of doing things but probably for different reasons. I suspect that Kris has a perfectly good reason to have a portfolio without many details of his work. It may be that the clients he works with appreciate this portfolio more than they would a more conventional one. All of this is speculation but at least it shows that there is no one size fits all portfolio approach.
Having a big backup of companies you've worked with is the best Thing you can Tell about yourself. He probably gets calls and then Shows some more
that would be my guess as well. But even so, it is still quite an unusual approach.
So much text holy moly. I wouldn’t spend more than 5 secs on that first folio. It loooks like she needs to be interviewing for a user researcher role
I agree that she could work to make the copy a bit more concise, but on the other hand it is hard to stand out with your personality and use very few words. When you cut back to using as little copy as posible it is easier to use the template phrases and join vast majoriy of portfolios that copy from each other. I think I prefer a bit more text and opportunity to know the person even before interview. I feel like the interview would go smoother and it would be more fruitful.
yes i agreee...i wouldnt hire her as a designer...but definitely more of research/writer role.
I find it demoralizing that recruiters have so little attention span that they don't realize when applicants bother to put substance in their work & portfolios.
I enjoy watching your videos comparing and contrasting different portfolios. A good way to learn. One day when I finally have mine, I’ll hope you will do a review on it 🤞🏻
Looking forward to reviewing your portfolio! Good luck.
