Building a Small Phone Update #2
Hello! Thank you all for your contributions and support so far - it really makes a difference and helps with motivation for the project.
We CAN have great cameras on a small phone. We WILL have great cameras on a small phone.
No matter what your skill-set, you can help us make a truly self-sustaining and long-term open-source advanced camera app.

Off topic but nice book in the background (Banks)
Hi Joe! Interesting project! Found it through r/smallphones and just joined the WhatsApp group to stay up to date. Is there any document / info that outlines the current plan and and progress on this? The Google doc is there but it mainly focuses on the camera.. are you developing a camera app now or building the phone? I am confused... But also really interested, both as a user as well as a contributor (I have a background in industrial design).
Can you provide a different payment method than a straight credit card? id be happy to pitch in to support, but you can understand why people would be hesitant to provide such info. Crypto would be a good option
I don't think its the camera app i think mainly its the chip and training the chip, even WhatsApp will have a different camera on every phone
I want this, it scares me it only has 40 views...
Its only been two days, it slowly has to build up steam
Good luck man, I too have a Jelly Max, and I'd really like to see you do something better!
Love this!!!!
It's a shame that it seems different from the phone I wanted, but I’ll cheer you on! Since it’s your first project, I hope you decide on specs that can attract as many users as possible.
btw the video is unlisted
such a phone would cost lot of money to make you will have to charge $700 a phone with lot of work, what about esim and bands?
Id pay that and more. Alot of phones are $1k+ nowadays and just junky big boys
I use call and text a lot so i do need a good battery but i dint want to scroll on social media
You can get the light phone 3 coming out soon will be amazing
Pass, I need a phone that can actually do stuff.
Hope this works out. I love small phones and want there to be some better options than what’s currently available. Is there a way to donate to the cause other than pledging the $1? I’d like to donate some money even if this doesn’t end up getting off the ground just to support your time and effort in trying to create a phone. The challenges like you said, are numerous
A Ring/Silent switch toggle on the side like iPhone used to have would be amazing.
There's definitely a market for small phones. How big it is I'm not sure, but scrolling through Reddit you would be making a lot of people very happy. People (including me) miss the small form factor of the likes of the Xperia compact range that you mentioned
Yep I agree; the best fingerprint scanners i've used have been side mounted. Although the position for me wouldn't be a dealbreaker
I would any day exchange the headphone jack for IP67 or IP68 water resistance! I use my phone (Galaxy S23) as a satnav on a motorbike and I wouldn't want to risk it against the elements. Plus the few times i've accidentally dropped it in water lol
IP ratings cost a lot of money, and you can absolutely maintain water resistance with a headphone jack. Countless phones of the past with IP68 ratings had 3.5mm ports
I don't really care for the AI button stuff, but the concept for the phone sounds awesome. I will be backing it!
Any action button would be more than fine, allowing remapping if a user wants
Everything you're talking about sounds pretty good. 4" is on the small side for me. 5" would be ideal for me, but I would probably still buy it if it's 4,5". Please don't go esim only, many budget oriented cell carriers still don't give out esims (at least where I live). February seems like a really short timeframe. Or is that the time the Kickstarter will launch? Will you have a prototype ready by the time the Kickstarter launches?
