Learning Conversation: Complexity-Relevant Ways to Communicate
To effectively manage the complex challenges our world is facing, we need to become capable of generative learning conversations. "Discussion," "Debate," "Chat," "Dialogue." Do you know what kind of conversation you are having? Do you know which kind is most relevant for working together on complex problems? "Lots of people have very expensive degrees, lots of education, and are very bright, but they have no idea how to make themselves useful to others...The old model (of someone telling me what is useful to other humans and I'm going to fulfill a PREDETERMINED, OTHER-DIRECTED ROLE within an established organization) is out the window. Yet we are still marching down that path towards a world that d...

Make sure there are people in the room who make you uncomfortable. Make sure there are people in your initiative you've never met before. Make sure there are people who look different from you and think differently from you."

In this short video, Kathy Sipple uses the metaphor of "The Three Sisters" to help us think differently about how we "group" ourselves with others. Liked this interview. John presented a lot of good info about things going on today with sociocracy like what's going on in Heufvelurg, Netherlands, Karala, India, North Carolina with the Appalachian Foodshed Project, Circle Forward, and Collective Impact. I like that you were specific with your questions and left your interviewee with plenty of airspace to talk.

"The old model of 'Someone else is going to tell me what is useful to other humans, and I'm going to fulfill a predetermined, other-directed role within an established organization'-That's kind of out the window!" In many cases, yes. Significantly, I think, this shift is taking place at the same time that more and more of human exchange is being commodified; "what's useful to me" is being reduced to "what I'm willing to pay for"; and "what's useful from me" is being equated with "what other people are willing to pay for." Much of society is losing networks of trust and play. In terms of polarity, I think social entrepreneurship is part of the solution, while re-commoning (committing to nurture and protect shared value) provides a vital balance.
