Dahi Vada a dish that is popular all across India, is a very old Indian recipe. Kashiravata, as it was termed, the recipe was mentioned in the Sanskrit Encyclopedia compiled by Someshvara III, the ruler of present Karnataka back in 12th century. Descriotion of Dahi Vada is also found in literature from 500 BC.
Usually prepared with soaked Urad Dal or Black Gram, where in some places urad and moong dal is mixed together to prepare the vada or the lentil fritter. Mostly the batter is fermented and deep fried. Later soaked in warm water and served with a topping of curd, green chutney, & tamarind sweet-sour chutney.
Since, I am preparing todays recipe for an olderly gentleman who has several health issues, I am preparing Dahi Vada with Moong Dal.
Mong Dal is rich in Vitamin A, B, C and E and also in many minerals including iron, calcium, and potassium. It is a rich source of protein.
Moong Dal helps to loose weight. Is not it amazing? It detoxifies the body and helps metabolism. It enhances the immune system.
If you take Moong Dal on a regular basis it reduces bad cholesterol and improves flexibility of arteries and veins. It also regulates blood pressure.
Green Moong da is rich in complex carbohydrates in high form of fibre, which stabilizes blood sugar.
Now think before you say no to this wonderful gift of mother nature.
