I also started with an electric typewriter however mine had a mini calculator style screen that helps you make zero mistakes by being able to type out then press enter and have it type for you! Nakajima AX-160. However I have grown a little and now prefer manual typewriters. you can use them anywhere and they are pretty indestructible. You lucked out with your typewriter though, smith-corona are like the Lamborghini of typewriters, Hermes being the Rolls Royce. If you want to get into manual typewriters I always recommend trying to find the Adler Tippa, they are nice lovely machines that are ultraportable and type like a dream, if you can spare some money get an Olympia SM9 - the SM9 will carry you through to the grave and outlive your grandkids. Just remember with a manual typewriter you are the entire momentum of the machine so you need to press harder than you'd expect and also just the right amount to keep a rhythm up. Typewriters are the cheapest I have seen them right now but that doesn't mean they don't add up - THIS WILL BECOME AN ADDICTION so choose your next beast wisely if you don't wanna go too far down the rabbit hole :)

Get the platen recovered from a company called JJ Short. It will be substantially quieter. Will run somewhere around $70 to $90.

I learnt bike mechanic's at a local council run place . We got bikes from tips and donate we use bikes to mKe a good one and sold them on low i come familys kids had birthday and a Christmas present otherwise they go without all the hard work was worth to see there faces. All the best😊

imho, considering the small number of things where a typewriter would be more convenient than typing on a computer, you might as well just write with a pencil.

I saved a 1951 Olympia SM-3 typewriter from being thrown away. Payed around $70 for it and fixed it up. Works like a charm, and I almost use it on a daily basis for school believe it or not. Somethings I think analog is here to stay!
