First Amtrak 41 Floridian
There's work going on in New York, and also a shortage of Superliners. Amtrak have decided to solve both problems (at least in part) by "temporarily" replacing the Capitol Limited and the Silver Star with a single service that runs between Chicago and Miami via Washington DC.
The first trains left on November 10th, which put them through the Washington DC area on the 11th. The North/West-bound train was going to arrive after dark (or close to it) but I was able to catch the East-bound service through Shenandoah Junction, WV. First time I've seen Amfleets on this line!

In 2016, CSX opened the first Virginia Avenue tunnel in DC to double-stacked containers. This was one of the final pieces in the puzzle that had been blocking double-stacks from traversing through DC from the south to the west. But to the North... Baltimore's Howard Street Tunnel remains a similar block. Only single-stacked containers can pass through. After years of planning and negotiations o...
Train 289 racing Southbound at Shenandoah Junction, WV
มุมมอง 212 หลายเดือนก่อน
It's late 2023, most of the leaves have fallen, and Norfolk Southern's train 289 is headed towards Rossville, TN. This was once train 201, and it would have taken the Shenandoah Valley Line to Roanoke, but between limited crew availability and shorter sidings on the southern end of the Hagerstown and the entirety of the Roanoke district, this train more frequently turns east at Riverton to take...
Cardinal in Charlottesville with an Aged P42DC
มุมมอง 952 หลายเดือนก่อน
The front cowling on P42DC AMTK 27 has seen better days as it brings the westbound Cardinal, train 51, into the old-C&O side of Charlottesville station. The story for this train is that I had the bright idea to get out of Charlottesville and head west to try and catch it again, and ideally at speed. Alas, I had this idea about 3 minutes too late for it to work out as I missed the train at Ivy -...
C is for Crescent - the Amtrak Crescent!
มุมมอง 1562 หลายเดือนก่อน
It's mid-summer, and the sun is shining high in the mid-morning as the north-bound Amtrak Crescent makes its way north through Virginia. It left Charlottesville about 20 minutes ago, and is passing through the town of Orange. It will be another 20 minutes or so before it reaches Culpeper, and then on to DC and New York. I was hesitant about the new Siemens locomotives, but they're growing on me...

Back in August we shared a video of the Electric "Matangi" trains that service the Wellington region. We promised there would be another, and here it is! It was through the Wairarapa that the early New Zealand Government Railway would build its main line north, but the mountain ra...
Intermodal train 135 at Shenandoah Junction, WV
มุมมอง 233 หลายเดือนก่อน
Earlier this year a trip was made to Shenandoah Junction - a personal favorite of mine as it puts CSX and NS right on top of each other. Here we see train I135 tracking west. It's interesting to reflect on the years past - it doesn't seem so long ago that this would have been Q135, and it would have been all single-stacked containers because the old B&O (and the connecting lines that brought th...

well yea I red an article. Saying that there was going to be a tunnel under construction to get redune So some track trains it said that they were going to be backed up or canceled or delayed, but it sounds like that Amtrak able to keep so most of those trains going throughout the trips, but some still have to have long A’s sometimes because some all detouring around some areas in Albany, and probably other towns as well The tunnel is closed until next year. I think after it closed on Veterans Day last week. But nice catch catching this new Florida train with these charges
Awesome, 3054 is now 1871, the Atlantic Coastline heritage unit
Great catch! This is an empty autorack
Awesome catch! This train also has intermodal containers
WOW The front of that engine looks like it's been through a war and it was rocking back and forth a lot.
For sure! That is old jointed rail through there. No idea if BBRR have any plans to upgrade it to continuous welded, but I can't imagine it's a high priority. Much of Charlottesville is a quiet zone so trains are moving fairly slow.
So, this is a very interesting place for Amtrak because it's where the Crescent and Northeast Regional diverge from the Cardinal. The Crescent and NE Regional use the far tracks which are the NS tracks that turn a bit west before turning south. Meanwhile, the Cardinal takes the near tracks, which is the Buckingham Branch RR (used to be CSX, and still leased to CSX). However, both tracks meet in a diamond in Charlottesville. So, all 3 Amtrak routes serve the Charlottesville station, but the Cardinal uses a different platform than the other 2 since it is on a different set of tracks. From Charlottesville, NS continues south through North Carolina. While the BBRR heads West, transitions to CSX at Clifton Forge and heads into West Virginia.
Great Timing!
Nice to see the drone back up in the air. Great catch of the two Auto racks Meeting up.
Love Amtrak. What radio scanner do you use?
Thanks! I have a couple, but typically it's a Whistler WS1010 connected to either an old RadioShack or a newer TrainTenna mag-mount antenna on the car.
Nice color. Did you color grade this video and were these videos made over a few days or all in one day.
Thanks! I have a standard LUT that gets applied to just about everything, some day I might get around to modding it a little but it works for me. Most of these April 2023 vids were all the same day; if my video metadata is accurate (and I have no reason to believe I made it up) it was April 1st.
Nice, Waiting for the back log of videos
Always like going to Shenandoah Junction.
Awesome catch catching this heritage unit on this train Nice catch too catching that first train too with 124
Mackay's Crossing used to be on State Highway 1 before the overpass in the background was built in the mid 2000s. You can imagine the traffic every train caused. Double tracking ended about ten metres to the right/south of the crossing, with the remaining line to Paraparaumu being single track.
@@someonesomewhere1240 I remember, I used to cross it occasionally!
I’m a bit surprised you didn’t make some videos of Auckland’s urban rail network. Nor the copious number of freight trains.
It was all time! The NZ videos are essentially stolen time, moments I can run out of the house for an hour or two. Where we stayed in Auckland wasn't close to any of the rail lines, and in Wellington we were off the HVL which only runs the one freight per day - maybe two if the Hutt Shops shunt runs. For this trip we were well booked for other adventures. I'm ever-hopeful that the next time will be a bit different, but no idea when that might be.
Hmm those 8 unit trains don’t look very full these days.. I used to use the 8-car peak services, and all the seats were always taken by the time the train left Waterloo
This is not the NS Blue Ridge Division. This is the Piedmont Division, Washington Sub. The Blue Ridge Division runs from Crewe, Virginia to Roanoke, Virginia.
Years ago, yes. Not in 2024. The Piedmont was split and the northern end became part of the Pocahontas Division which was further merged into the Blue Ridge Division several months ago. Regarding the Crewe-Roanoke route, you're thinking of the Blue Ridge District which is also a part of the Blue Ridge Division. These things don't change very often, but they do change - I reference the FRA GIS system to validate Division, District, and Milepost whenever editing so it was correct at the time of editing!
Amtrak 20 operates on the on the Piedmont Sub Division from Lynchburg to Washington, DC. South of Lynchburg is the Danville Sub. You are referring to the February NS changed the NS Valley from Roanoke to Hagerstown, MD to the Pocahontas Division. I reside on the Blue Ridge District line in Concord, Virginia
NS reworked their Divisions back in 2020, there are 3 Regions, each with two Divisions. Northern (Great Lakes, Keystone), Central (Midwest, Blue Ridge), and Southern (Gulf, Coastal). I don't think I can link here, but if you search for Norfolk Southern's "Public Improvement Projects Manual" you should find a PDF from 2022, which has a current system map on or around page 180. The H line from Hagerstown to Shenandoah is shown as part of the Keystone Division, but with exception to some lines close to the TN border every other line is part of the Blue Ridge division, including the former Piedmont, Virginia, and Pocahontas divisions. Many of the districts are the same as they have long been, but I haven't followed any changes outside of my regular areas to speak with certainty at that level.
Seems like you were just in New Zealand. Nice video the station and train looked very clean.
4:01 in the video. I didn't realise what a clear line of sight there was from Ava to the building at the bottom of Wainuiomata Hill. Great video.
Nice catch. Almost like a small version of point of rocks. I need to visit that one.
That was nice to see. I thought you would have done a video of you riding the train.
@@MarkTheLostTraveler I did go for a ride with the family, but they had clear signs asking not to take video while riding (for safety). I probably could have without any significant concerns, but I think next time I'd take some clip mounts and hands-free an Action Camera somewhere cool!
Nice video and thank you for all the information on the Class Leader.
WOW 5 units pretty cool. I see there's going to be some track work going on.
THERE is no CPKC engine IT UP, NS, KCS no CPKC
I Can't believe that is your 1st ALC-42. being that you're all over the place.
I have tons of videos of Gallitzin area. And Allegheny Portage Railroad. I have a recent 3 mile guided hike video. Check it out
I Wanted to go to Harper's Ferry today, but I slept in. lol nice catch over the bridge.
What type of video camera do you use? The zoom and quality look great!
Outstanding show with some outstanding models on parade. Congratulations on 75 years!
Roger from Capitol Free-mo here. I'm going to take a shot at catching the next setup. What ratio do you use for the time-lapse?
Hey Roger! Typically I end up with about 1 capture per second and that reassembles at 29.97 (or round to 30) frames per second, however that translates into your camera.
Very nice video! May I ask what camera were you using?
This was done using my go-to, a Canon GX10. Colors were adjusted and some clips had additional stabilization during editing, but otherwise it's "straight off the camera." I will typically use an extra audio recorder rather than relying on the camera's microphones, but not for this event.
The breakdown was pretty cool. I love that long bridge take down. Interesting seen the different vehicles in there for transporting their stuff. Would like to see a photo of the camera train.
That was so cool. How was that mounted and what camera did you use. I want to make up some type of car and mount a camera on it for different scales. Would be cool to put it on layout for shows are home layouts. Are you in a club. Thank you.
I'm active with NVMR - the Northern Virginia Model Railroad club, but they're a fixed-layout only place in Vienna. I've also been participating with Capitol Free-mo for a while, and it was their layout where I didn't most of the weekend. The camera car is simple: DJI Action 2 has a magnetic base, and most flat cars have a magnetic weight under the plastic deck. Some modern ones are less ferrous, but the older ones like the Athearn Blue Box have a weight that the magnet attracts and sticks with. Throw a good loco in behind, and off we go! Not sure I'd recommend it, the battery life isn't great and transfer times to an SD card are long, plus I fight overheating in the summer, but it is the rig I have and matches my other DJI cameras (at least for small stuff like that)
@@2Railz Thank you for all the info.I just started doing N-scale I was doing G but am starting sale all of it. G was just getting very expensive.
Fun video to watch. I was at the show on Sunday. I did a video on all the layouts only.
I was there! If you recognized me, you should have said something! I had my gear to do the layout tours, but there was so much going on with our layout that I barely had time to step away.
Nice to see you back. Good video.
Sad only 7 views. I took my son to Japan to ride the bullet train and some other slow ones that were really good for sightseeing. Single and double car diesels. And the scenery was so nice. Not many older people speak English just find younger people they speak it fine. They learn in school super sweet girls and boys. Some asked if they speak good lol.
Wow great stuff ,do you think they were the same length !
