Sailing Mother Ocean - Ep 7 - Boatyard Blues Part 5
Some tips on prepping for mast removal. Then, the mast repair is complete so it's time to paint, dump the old music player and replace it with an adroid unit, finish the wiring and instrumentation at the top of the mast, replace sail track screws, and start putting hardware back on the mast. New chainplates go on as well. Mother Ocean is a Cheoy Lee 44 built in 1980. (this replaces the original video which had some rendering glitches in it)

    Thank you for your video. I'm having an issue with my motor speed. I have a 6HP YAMAHA on my 11-foot inflatable boat. Previously, I could reach speeds of 25 km/h with two people and 30 km/h with just one person. Now, under the same conditions, I can only reach 19 km/h with two people and 24 km/h with one person. I took the motor to a YAMAHA dealer and spent $140 to have the carburetor removed, cleaned, and flushed in an ultrasonic cleaner. They also drilled out and removed the EPA plug, adjusted the idle mixture screw, and tested the thermostat. Despite everything checking out, I'm still experiencing the same issue. I'm at a loss for what to do next and would really appreciate any advice or help you can offer.

      I'm no expert but what I would check is that the main jet is clean but it sounds like you had that professionally cleaned, next the throttle linkage to ensure full travel (so the throttle is fully open when you expect it to be), ensure you have a clean fuel filter. Aging fuel? Maybe put some known clean fuel in the onboard tank to see if there is a difference. Any propellor corrosion that could reduce its efficiency?

    Would be cool to see that schooner from topside and the interior layout.. how long was it?? Video throws things off, some average size boats seem larger and larger seem smaller than they really are

      Working from (dim) memory, I'd say 40-45 feet-ish. I walked by it often but never caught the owner there (I would have definitely asked for a tour :)

    Thanks for videoing the tiny spring on the float bowl pivot- it had me stumped. I'm having a lot of trouble reconnecting my gear shift clamp that behind the round rubber grommets. I've done it before it just takes a little patience- the rods refuse to line up with the grooves in the clamp.?

    Hopefully you post another video sometime. I’m buying a 1980 Cheoy Lee 44, identical to yours. Hopefully if the deal goes through tomorrow. And then I bring it home to port Townsend! It needs a new mast, Maybe I should make a video when I build a new mast for it but I’m not a TH-camr either. I really appreciated your videos though 🙏 you should do another video, I want to see it under sail!

    That purple hardwood comes from Africa?? I know that it's extremely hard.. the young man restoring tally ho used a large piece for the keel if I remember correctly.. he's quite the ship builder after taking on the huge project

    • @sailingmotherocean
      @sailingmotherocean 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Google says: Purple Heart trees grow from 100′ to 170′ tall, with trunk diameters up to 4′. It is not a threatened wood. It is found throughout Central and South America, ranging from southeastern Brazil to Costa Rica. My yard neighbor, a skilled wooden boat builder, saw my dilemma and cut the wedges for me to use.

  • @bendaves77
    @bendaves77 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Was the mast painted white when new or did a owner along the way paint it?? I can't help but think how beautiful it would be all varnished up and shiny.. I hate when people take a beautiful piece of wood and slap paint on it.. if it's stained to dark for a person's liking then strip it and stain it lighter..

    • @sailingmotherocean
      @sailingmotherocean 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the 40 years prior to my ownership it had been painted white many times. I started to take it to bright but feared taking to much wood off in the process. I have no plans to paint the boom!

  • @bendaves77

      If you are near water where sailboat racing happens, volunteer to crew on one of the boats. You’ll start out doing simple stuff like grinding a winch but it’s a great way to learn and work your way up ! ( and someone else making the boat payments 😂)

    Normally I would have to remove the curtains to do any job on our boat, followed by deck head covers, floor boards, sliding blinds, fly screens etc. Then after I have repaired the other three things I have found, I would go to the hardware store to get the right size nuts for the pipes. So all up that 15 minute job would only take 5 days.

    Do you plan to varnish the mast so you can keep an eye on it?

    • @sailingmotherocean
      @sailingmotherocean 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I started down that path only to find the paint wasn't applied over varnish so I would have had to take too much wood off. I did go down to bare wood in all critical places (joints, screw/bolt holes, etc) and only found 4 screw penetrations that I drilled out and plugged with spruce bungs. The mast head will be entirely new when done so overall, I have full confidence in the mast. As soon as it is done and fully painted, I will put together another video covering all the work.

    I am astonished that a 1980 boat of this size has a wooden mast. I would get that replaced with an aluminum mast asap. a wood mast of that age is now 40 years old plus...time to go to better materials.

      I’d encourage you to look around Lantz, there are many out there and many quite a bit older than mine with strong wooden masts. A future video will show the repair of my mast, a clothes pin repair of the entire masthead but the remainder of the mast is rock-solid!
