Stuart Bourne - Making gardening easier
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 12 พ.ย. 2020
For 7 years I worked as the Senior Gardener for the rose garden at Buckingham Palace. During that time I’ve maintained gardens for kings and queens, princes and presidents. Now I have my own allotment and I want to share my knowledge to make gardening and growing fruit and veg easier for everyone.

You're welcome!
Hi Stuart - thanks for your videos...I have a question...near the end you left the long shoot, because you needed a new leader...why did you need a new leader? I'm new to this, and have just started with espalier pruning, so excuse me if it's a bit obvious! :) Thanks again..
@@andrewsflicks7920 that’s no problem and thank you for commenting. I need a new leader so that the tree continues to grow and create another row of branches. Once the rows reach the top of the fence, I’ll be pruning out the leaders to ensure the tree doesn’t get too tall.
Can you grow custard apple as espalier tree, please?
To be honest, I’ve not heard of custard apples grown in this way, but I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able. Maybe give it a go
May want stronger support once you have all the weight of the fully grown plants pulling on the string and canes. Speaking from experience 🙂
That’s very true. What I’ve done in the past is to leave some extra string at the top, so when it grows I can lower it down and leave the bottom of the plant resting on the ground. That way it takes some of the weight out of it.
Great informative video
Thank you ☺️
Hi Stuart, might have missed earlier parts of the story. What were the seedlings you're growing here and getting ready to plant?
They are tomatoes and sweet corn
It would be nice that we can watch more than a black screen for your video...
Hi, I’ve checked and it’s working fine for other people. Sorry
Looks beautiful in blossom 🌸
Thank you, it’s enough to really cheer me up on these cold spring morning 😂
Enough to make me subscribe to your channel! Clearly an expert- and I am not. Picked up your videos on how to espalier fruit trees. Thank you for sharing your experience with novices like me.
Thank you, and I’m glad you find my videos useful
So if you prune after the second bud will that lateral get longer each year since you will prune after the second bud year after year to the new growth?
It will, but then you prune the lateral to length that you desire
@@BourneToAllotment Could this be done long term with a dwarf mulberry? I've seen young tree on line but no older mulberry trees done this way, like 10 year old.
@Carperama absolutely, though you should need to do less pruning with a Mulberry
I'm doing exactly this this coming week. Before I know it I'll have daffodils everywhere. Thanks for the video!
No problem, have fun!
Great video 🌱
So nice of you, thank you ☺️
What type of tree is this? I am starting an espalier persommon. Do you have any ideas how they should be pruned? I understand different fruit trees grow fruit differently and its not as simple as snipping off the branches that dont follow the pattern we want them to grow in.
These are apple and pear trees. That’s a great idea, they like sheltered and in a warm spot and so growing them against a wall makes sense. They don’t like a lot of pruning, so avoid removing a lot of growth each year, but if you have the patience then this technique will also works.
Question.....if I prune the longer, vertical growth, that has what looks like a fruit spur on the end.....will it produce another fruit spur lower down?
Yes it should do.
Plots looking great.my raspberries absolutely took off last year and went crazy. Good luck 👍 rhubarb looks healthy too
Thank you 😊
Excellent video 👏🏼😊
Thank you so much ☺️

I have dwarf fruit trees that I planted in patio containers this year. Should I prune them now too?
As they are recently planted I would leave them until next year to prune. That way you haven’t stressed the plant before it’s established a good root system
Makes sense. Thank you 😊
Great video and explained really well. The close up footage was helpful as well. So how long does it take for them to develop roots. I will give this a go and see how I do, thanks.
Thank you. depending on the plant and time of year, it’ll take 3-4 weeks
