The Peaks of Otter and Abbott Lake area is an NPS site on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Central Virginia, near Lynchburg and Roanoke. The developed area includes a main lodge building, restaurant, hotel, NPS visitor center, picnic area, and campground facilities. It's situated between three mountains: Flat Top, Harkening Hill, and Sharp Top, the latter being a popular day hike. The profiles of Flat Top and Sharp Top mountains are visible from many places in the region due to their prominence in the surrounding landscape.
We recently spent four nights at the lodge and took some footage of the areas you can visit if you're there for the day, or staying longer like us.
In this video, we're walking around Abbott Lake. It's a one-mile paved pathway that circles the lake, starting at the Peaks of Otter Lodge and Restaurant. Along the path, there are other trails leading to hikes and the visitor center on the other side of the Blue Ridge Parkway, a trail to the campground and Sharp Top, access to the large picnic area, some historical sites, a small pier, and above all, beautiful scenic views all along the way.
