How giving away value for free creates demand
When I first headed back to the gym on January 9, 2024, it had been nearly six years since I’d last stepped inside a gym.
Five months later, I am waking up at 5 am, heading to the gym every morning of the week, starting work an hour earlier than I need to, and buying $200 worth of supplements each month.
Why?
Because I have an unsatisfied satisfaction.
That’s the beauty of exercise after a long period. It doesn’t take long to start seeing benefits.
Like weight loss. Body shape change. Energy level increase.
And within a few months you’ve gone from utterly sedentary and avoiding stairs to buying a fitness tracker, measuring every part of your day in terms of caloric burn and steps - and preparing your gym bag, supplements and work clothes by 9 pm so you can be asleep with enough time to wake again at 5 am.
When you get a taste of something better, you tend to want more.
It’s the sales approach of almost all software-as-a-service models and drug dealers.
Give a taste of a good thing and your customer will want more.
It’s also the approach used by successful coaches, online teachers and course creators across the internet.
Give everyone a free look at what you know that they don’t.
Usually a social media post or a short form video that hints at something that appears to address a problem that you once had that you managed to solve.
The trick here is that it has to be a problem that enough other people also need to solve.
Their curiosity will be piqued enough for them to maybe, click a link to see more about your solution.
And now you’ve helped someone.
And the best part of this is that both you and the person you’ve helped are hooked.
Once you’ve had a taste of connecting people with solutions, you’ll want to do it again and again and again.
And the people you’ll help will see that they’ve only scratched the surface and want to go deeper to know more.
Both you and they are experiencing that unsatisfied satisfaction.
You’ve had something great. So you don’t just want it again. You want more of it.
You want to go deeper. Experience more and learn more.
All because you’ve you’ve gone from curiosity to proof.
When curiosity meets proof something new is born.
Confidence.
You’re confident because you’ve just validated that you know what you’re doing and are fulfilling your purpose in life.
They’re confident because if they can solve one of their biggest problems - imagine what else they could solve.
I’m Dante St James.

There’s a perfect word for what’s happening right now on the internet. Enshittification. It perfectly sums up how we went from an internet full of hope for a better future to the craptastic mess we’ve landed in. And I’ll pause here to credit Cory Doctorow for coming up with this term, because it really is the best made-up word I’ve come across since… well… I can’t get away with that word on TH-...
Most of us are avoiding the news. This is why. And what you can do about it.

Right now, in Australia, the majority of our population is avoiding the news. 72% of women and 67% of men are actively taking steps to avoid it. That means no 6.30 pm TV news. Increase channel reach: Re write this the same way but add more of essay vibes to it , like you see many other opinion channels do . Make sure to maintain the honesty at some points . Id love to watch this with just a bit more "meat" in it , like exposition of the problem based on arguments, a bit of dead internet theory....

I can't speak for the rest, but I avoid Mainstream News outlets. I'm tired of their lies and the incredible influence their ad revenue holds over the content they provide. I'm not worried about journalists of integrity; I'm worried about censorship. And I get my news from those who refuse to be censored. And that is a disturbingly small world.

This is the best advice for a starter. To learn copy you don't need to read about copy (books, courses...), you need to read copy - by Kyle Milligan from Copy Squad (an underrated copy genius) My advice for everyone looking to start it would be: learn the basics, then make it a daily practice to analyze real copies from good writers, practice creativity (try to tweak what you have analyzed), and WRITE A FULL COPY.

ChatGPT has a bad taste in word choice, it's suitable for fiction, but if you have good taste in copywriting, you can use it to get drafts and edit them. I don't use GPT to write; I use it in my research, to brainstorm pain points, selling points, or whatever I lack in the domain, but for the writing, I do it myself to sound human and connect with my audience.

They've inspired me and REMINDED me to be simple and follow the outline of marketing story that works best. Thanks a lot for being excellent and a true expert in what you do.
