20th Century Events That Happened in Star Trek | Series | 1947
We all know what happens on the various television shows, but what happened in the Star Trek universe before Jean-Luc Picard’s crew explored strange new worlds in Star Trek: The Next Generation? Before James Kirk’s crew sought out new life and new civilizations in Star Trek: The Original Series? Before Jonathan Archer’s crew went where no man had gone before in Star Trek: Enterprise? Let’s start in the 20th Century and see what events molded the chronological Star Trek timeline.

    "Ugly Bags of Mostly Water"! Breath of fresh air this week with nice Matte paintings and a guy getting lasered to death! 14:30 Caleb's brain has officially been fried from watching season 1 XD. Its nice to see Troi have stuff to do but I don't think the writers know how to use her Betazoid powers properly yet. You went into it but I don't know what the scientists were hiding from the Enterprise, did they understand there might be life on the planet or not, it seems like the episode couldn't decide? This episode does a much better job with the Drama, escalating from a murder/mystery plot to an alien entity plot pretty well, though it really is a rehash of "The Devil in the Dark". I'm not surprised that the show had production issues considering the blazing fast pace they shot they show, 5-6 days a week, 10 months a year. Thanks for the review as always guys!

      @@Cap_Olimar Hahaha, excellent! So true, Caleb is officially fried. And yeah, I agree. I honestly don’t know if the writers really ever fully understood Troi’s abilities. Yeah, I find that most of the writing is geared for “commercial cliffhangers”, and once that plot is revealed to be neutral, bad, or good, they move onto the next cliffhanger or simply resolve it all with a sentence or a Captain’s Log. I feel like that’s the biggest issue now when the episodes are better like this one. Thank you for the support and comments as always. We truly appreciate you hanging with us all these months!

    Purely constructive criticism? While I appreciate the reading of the writers and cast list, and we should thank them for their work, I think you should consider only reading the names of those that people are likely to remember from other shows and films (or who have some other interesting trivia related to them). I, a casual viewer, am not going to remember the names, but now that you have mentioned the lead scientist was in James Bond, I will always think of that when I see him in shows and films of the past.

    • @thedaystromholodeck
      @thedaystromholodeck 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@frommyoffice Hahahaha, yes! You’re welcome! The choice of using Kaplans is probably the most unexplained, haha. I think I did in “Encounter at Farpoint”, but it’s been a few months. So here goes- According to Robert Kline, an art designer and storyboard artist for TAS, Ervin Kaplan didn’t listen to anyone when he picked colors or anything for the show. So, since that’s kinda a jerk thing to do, I made him / the Kzinti as the low rating marks. Silly, I know. Overall, I wanted an interesting rating system that was unique to the podcast. Basically -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3. But numbers alone aren’t interesting, so I decided to go with names of real people to match each of the sections. (Negative, Neutral, Positive) Kurtzman, of late, has been getting the business end of the stick, so I tried to think of another person the Trek fandom sorta dislikes. Kaplan was about the only person I could think of. Roddenberry being in the middle made sense to me, with how much he is equally liked and disliked, and other than like Doug Drexler and D.C. Fontana, the Okuda’s are practically the most beloved folks in the franchise. (Outside of the actors, of course.) Anyways, I know it’s super random and bizarre, but I enjoy how unique and how ‘left-field’ it is. But thank you so much for the kind words! This was definitely a fun episode to cover and I’m glad you enjoy our style. Your support is greatly appreciated!

    "Home Soil" is a 1988 TNG episode that reminds me of a 1964 episode of The Outer Limits, "Counterweight". Earth scientists located a lifeless planet called, "Antheon", that is perfect for terraforming and colonization. But, when the actual lifeforms of Antheon learn of Earth's plans they make themselves visible to the first group of colonists with the retort, "do we look lifeless to you, now?". And then engage in delightful trash talk, calling all humans, "overgrown children scared of space monsters - better to stay on Earth hiding in your rooms". Home Soil also has a dressing down scene for the human race. There's something refreshing about having aliens tell us to, "go cry to your mama, she's also made of water and just as ugly".

    "When the Bough Breaks" first aired in 1988 and at the time I had no issues with the episode. As time passed I got the impression that this episode was planned in the studio cafeteria over pie and coffee, by writers with no background in science fiction or medical science or basic human behavior. This is truly a strange episode combining future technology with 1940's medical procedures. This is one of those times when TNG feels like a show produced by high school students. This episode informed me that I needed to raise my entertainment standards.

If the goal is to highlight the family friendly side of serving on a Starship, the concept should be integrated throughout the series, not mashed into one episode. "When the Bough Breaks" turns aliens into upscale urbanites - just add a Mercedes in the driveway. Everything was aimed at the children being kidnaped, resulting in no time remaining to refine the basic idea of this episode.

    "I'm Johnny Knoxville and welcome to Jack-Ass" That old man make-up is awful I'm glad Caleb brought up Jack-Ass its what I thought immediately. I agree with Will that this is the worst episode that's not sexist or racist so that's notable. Season 1 TNG really is a ToS season in many ways, never seen a crazed admiral before! Picard was hitting his personal relaxation light too much to notice the Admiral becoming young and crazy. I liked Caleb comparing Gene and George and that Gene was stuck in what interested him and really couldn't expand his idea's, Episode I is not a great movie but it sure is fascinating and its much different than A New Hope. Also Caleb brought up that the stakes of episode are non-existent, it sure is hard to enjoy the show when the Drama is so boring, and this isn't the first time, the Bynar episode was like this too. The death scene sucks, Mark Jameson sucks, Michael Michelin sucks, Maizlish sucks, this episode sucks, season 1 sucks. Thanks for the review as always guys.

    "Blondes and Jazz!" I agree that Riker did an amazing job docking the ship and deserves all the praise. The Bynars are a good alien species and its nice that it's not just a dude with stuff glued to their face. Worf has a great one liner "if winning wasnt important why keep score" and Troi is missing of course. Minuet's introduction and her first scenes interacting with Riker are a bit creepy and besides that I don't think they work very well as a scene. We have not really interacted with many Holodeck beings in the show so far and its hard to compare how she acts different than the Holodeck girl at the very end of the episode besides talking. Minuet doesn't really act any different than the being in "The Long Goodbye"; though you did mention that they moved the episodes release order. The resolution of the episode has all the excitement of restarting your computer. The Bynars really believe in its easier to ask forgiveness than ask permission. Pretty good for season 1 keep up the good work guys!

    It's only upon reflection that I realized this episode of TNG is a classic, "bait & switch". The Bynars hijacking the Enterprise during a computer retrofit is just a ruse, same as all the "Riker No Gay" barfly hanky-panky in the holodeck scenes - it's all just padding. The real purpose of "11001001" was to have TNG hop on the 80's Jazz revival that had taken over popular culture. This whole episode was simply to do a Jazz Club scene and get street cred with Wynton Marsalis, who dominated mass media as a self-appointed jazz ambassador. TV shows had to have a jazz episode just like radio stations had the play Spandau Ballet's, "True", since jazz in the 80's was like "diversity/inclusion" brainwashing is today. Thank you, Minuet.

So he figures, I’ll just take all the senior staff instead! I understand the need to do so from the standpoint of the show, but it’s always been a funny thing to me. Two great moments when his partners talks about his family being back home and a great meme moment at the end of the episode with Picard saying the Alien greeting. The Holodeck is a cool device is the new series and your right it totally enables the characters to cosplay in any time period, if Gene had lived longer I bet Picard would have fought a holodeck Nazi at some point. I found the Holodeck episodes very entertaining. Seeing the TNG cast as novelized characters created for "holodeck theater cosplay" is fun, as long as it's not overdone. TOS used travel to different planets to introduce period costume dramas while TNG had the holodeck serving a similar purpose. I do find it odd that holodeck episodes seem to reference the past, but it's a past familiar to people from the 20th century.
