The Reluctant Outdoorsman
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 ธ.ค. 2022
Retired for two years, my wife suggested that I was becoming one with the sofa and should get out of the house and do something! As a result I have started to venture out on the Channel Island of Jersey with my cockapoo pal Paddy G.

Thank you Tom, I remember drumming at the Watersplash when it was an elegant night club, why are most things trashy today? Ah Western decline in everything it seems.
Yes Ron, I agree with you.........I think decline is accelerating and think that our generation have been extremely lucky, because we may just have lived at the best time anyone will ever experience!
Hi Tom, I am a new subscriber but have just enjoyed part one and part two of the walks to Le Braye. I look forward to following you.
Hi Chris, great to have you join our little group! There are over 370 videos on the channel to date, with most of them being walks around Jersey - so if that is your thing you should be able to find something to watch! 😁👍🏻 Thanks so much for taking the time to comment........it helps out the channel plus of course it gives me really valuable feedback. 😊
Hi Tom. Happy New Year and thanks for another video. Midvale Road has certainly been smartened up over the last 30 years. When we first moved to Jersey we were in a flat right opposite the church in David Place- the bells drove us mad. They must be the most practiced campanologists in Europe!
😂🤣😂🤣 Ha ha! Nice one Euan! My mate still lives just a few doors down from the church, so I'm sure he enjoys the bells! 🔔🔔🔔🔕😁👍🏻
Hi tom great comments, its nice to see older buildings standing proud . I had noticed you had walked placed the iconic jersey cow statues ,i had once took a photo of my professional shopper kim standing beside these statues of these cows. Against my better judgement i had shown my aunty this photo and the statement here is a photo of a couple of cows!! . I had steak that night but it was not to eat ,it was for my black eye😢. PS its nice to read from people from jersey and people from a far that are making comments to your channel.
Hi Brian, 😂🤣😂🤣 I'm loving the steaks and cows story! I'm sure in reality your professional shopper is an angel.........just like mine! 😉 Yes the comments today have been great.......and, as you say, it is really nice to hear from people on the island and from far flung places! Thanks mate! 👍🏻😁
Our restaurant was called the Olympic restaurant now called max grill
Aha! Yes, it is has scaffolding in front of it in the video. Brilliant! 😁👍🏻
Odeon cinema was in there with every new movie it was like a 2 minutes walk from our restaurant
Yes, cinemas were a much bigger deal in those days! 🎞️📽️🎬👍🏻😁
Bro thanks so much you made me so happy to see my home street were I was born
👍🏻 I'm happy to be of service........and the video is proving to be quite popular, so thank you! 😁👍🏻
Should start 'any requests?'! That was actually a good suggestion, nice walk.
Hi Jean, yes I think requests are obviously a good idea. I will mention it at the end of Part 2 of this video in case anyone else wants me to walk a particular street. 👍🏻
I’m always listening to the passers by and there’s no distinct accent, just sounds standard southern.
Hi Jeff, you hear very few proper Jersey accents any more. Some of the older people still have an accent........and it really is quite unique! 😁
I think if I lived on Jersey I’d go for an electric car, but I can’t see many on your videos. 9x5 isn’t a vast area to be concerned about range.
Hi Jeff, you are right - Jersey is ideal for electric cars as battery range is not an issue. There are quite a few electric vehicles over here.......they were even testing out an electric bus! But I think that more could be done to speed up the change to electric on the island.
I lived in Hilary Street and went to school initially at FCJ Midvale Road/Val Plaisant primary school. Later went to FCJ in David Place opposit St. Mark's church. Had a path worn up and down Bth Street!!!🚶♀ Went to see 'A Hard Day's Night' at the Odeon....several times! I remember Le Gallais. My mum used to look around the auction room there. And I had a grand aunt who used to make the tea in the canteen for the staff!
Hi Mary, thanks so much for sharing those memories with us and thanks for watching! 👍🏻
😮 wow Tom wonderful memories 🌹❤✅ we seen a film in the odeon called blown it all sky high in 1975 do you remember the song Tom? Your reply to me made me smile ✅ £5 per hour for painting the hand rails was excellent in them days a lot of bread 🤔 and the bag of chips at the end of the week I hope you ment roulette chips lol🙏 absolutely what a great guy you and wonderful family are making people happy God bless you all John 😊😊😊😊😊😊
🍟🍟🍟 "Three bags of chips on black!" 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Thanks so much John for staying with us! I don't remember blown it all sky high but I do remember going to the premier of 'Diamonds are forever' with my Mum, stepdad and friends........arriving in their Rolls Royce at the front door, to be greeted by Mr. Moneypenny the manager in full black tie - wasn't Mrs. Moneypenny a character in the Bond films? Those were the days! 😁👍🏻
Good afternoon Tom, Thanks for more in-town sights. So much charm and character in most of the buildings. Compared to where i live anyway. Even if the businesses come and go. Again, i really do enjoy learning about the history as you walk past. Hope the weather holds for me. Arriving again in just a few days and I will be spending a fair amount of time exploring town as well as the everywhere else. Enjoyed that very much, even if Paddy needed a break 😅
Thanks Robert, that's a long way come to visit our little island! Do you have family here or are you a Jersey boy who has moved away? 👍🏻
@thereluctantoutdoorsman 😂😂 Funny that you phrased it that way! Actually I'm originally from the US state of New Jersey. It wouldn't be uncommon to be called a Jersey boy here. Just not in the same sense. I keep coming to Jersey because I have future family there! Planning to get married to a lovely lifelong resident of your island. Whike i knew Jersey existed before 4 years ago, I had no idea that it was such a wonderful place. I've leaned so much of the history there as well as how it influenced America and New Jersey. All fascinating. And it's so walkable. You can walk anywhere there. Unlike where I live currently in America. Car culture, everyone drives everywhere. Even a few blocks. Perhaps I'll run into you and Paddy on the trail or on the pavements next week!
Wow Robert, what a great story and thank you so much for sharing that with us! It would be great to bump into you - although the weather is still fairly awful at the moment! 🚶🏻➡️🚶🏻♂️😁👍🏻
Finally visited Jersey few days ago. Hello from Hong Kong again 🙂
Hi Henry "Lei Ho ma?" 😁I hope that you enjoyed your trip! 👍🏻
@ oh yes totally, but have you noticed more Hong Kongers living in Jersey in recent years? Just curious
Hi Henry, I can't say that I have. The Thai population has boomed in recent years but I think the Hong Kong numbers have been fairly stable. 👍🏻
All the buildings look the same but the only change is all the businesses that used to be there are no longer. Bakeries, hotels, shops, Le Gallais building which looks the same from the outside but probably all changed inside. I used to go to Blockbusters in St Brelade for videos when I lived in the Parish. It’s nice to see that the road along side the Odeon is named Moneypenny way after the man that was there for as long as I can remember. Myself and my wife used to go to the Odeon a lot in my early days in Jersey. Cheers 🏌🏻♂️⛳️ 🐕🦺
Hi Nic, yes I agree - "Moneypenny way" was a lovely gesture. I remember him at the Odeon from way back! All the buildings from the Odeon for almost the entire block are brand new and the building site stretched from Moneypenny Way along Rue de Funchal, all the way to Minden Place!
it is amazing how much them streets have changed over the years. there use to be a video hire store next to the launderette in Midvale road. at the junction at Stopford Road was Birds the bakers and further up the road opposite the Odeon was Tanner's the bakery. the old Blockbusters store is now my Doctors surgery and who can forget that the shop next to RBS use to be Jeff Le Marquand's, where all the Mods in the early 80's bought their Parkers from. as for the big Iceland in the Le Gallais building, I remember when it was Le Riches supermarket.
Jean, thanks so much for giving everyone the extra information........very interesting indeed! I remember Jeff Le Marquand's very well and indeed have memories of all the other places, having lived in Stopford Road from 1995 for 25 years, or so! Thanks my friend! 👍🏻
@@thereluctantoutdoorsman TBH you could make a second YT channel. where you could edit old photos in to your existing videos, as sort of "then and now" series. I am sure that the Jersey Archives would help you out with photos or even footage.
Nice idea.........I'll definitely give that some thought! 👍🏻
Haven't seen that car park on Midvale road with so many free spaces in decades, it's always rammed! 😅
Hi and yes, you are right. My mate Macca used to park in there and it was always full! 😁👍🏻
Hello Tom , what a lovely video of west coast path in Jersey, would love to come back and see & walk parts of Jersey. Haven’t been there since 1993. Paddy is a great walking companion.
Hi Iain, thanks so much for taking the time to comment. 1993 probably seems like yesterday, but can you believe that that is over 30 years ago! Where does the time go? I wouldn't be doing these videos without our Paddy! 🐾😁👍🏻
Hi Tom, thanks for another lovely video. I liked the music!!! I am happy to paint the railings free of charge for a free hotel place and to spend the Summer there😂😂
Sounds good to me Valerie! 😂🤣😂🤣
Some of the backgroung "music" is dire - had to turn the sound off. -
😁 Colin, my wife said exactly the same thing.........and she was in the next room! ☹️
Hi Tom I couldn't help but notice when you mentioned the word Watersplash.. Just like magic the accompanying music 🎹 was very appropriate and relaxing .. Good choice Tom. ✅. Meanwhile I am wondering 🤔 do you prefer these shorter,, let's say less taxing walks or the more precarious, adventurous, rugged, clambering over rocks? . I wonder which Paddy prefers 😂. Thanks for the wee History lesson too 📚..it Is good to learn something new every day . See you again soon Im Sure. All the best ☘️
Hi Christine........glad you enjoyed the music.....Colin and my wife couldn't stand it! 😁😁😁 The walk we just watched was actually from Corbiere to the end of the Five Mile Road and it took a couple of hours, so I was a bit "cream crackered" by the end of it but yes, I know what you mean and I definitely prefer the cliff paths with all their ups and downs! Paddy just loves being out there but he does particularly enjoy a good beach! Thanks for all your comments, I really appreciate you taking the time! 👍🏻
@@thereluctantoutdoorsmanmy stupid brain... Of course you were walking the full stretch . Quite a dander Tom and I guess Paddy never complained. Wondering how many steps it was 😂
A few too many! 😁 How people complete the island walk in one go each year never ceases to amaze me though. Angie and our daughter Libby completed it in 17 hours when Libby was just 13 and in the worst conditions the walk has ever seen! There is no way I could have done it! 🥵😡🤬
We walked along there many years ago, Tom. We played some crazy golf and then had a lovely lunch in the golf club next to it! Assuming they are all still there!
Hi Sheila, the golf club is teetering along with many disgruntled members. The crazy golf is still going strong and I believe the clubhouse Rocco's is still open! Snowing? ❄️🌨️☃️
@thereluctantoutdoorsman oh really? 🤣. Glad to hear they are still going anyway! Must have been 8 years or so ago when we went there😱
😮 wow Tom and Paddy 🐕🥩🦴 g I remember earlier in the year you and 🌟 Angie walked this Trek if I had a tin of paint a wire brush I sort the rusty railings out lol 🤔 it will take years but what a lovely place to do it in summer 🏖️ I remember the sands chateau letaq and water splash clubs back in the early 70s don Estelle and his sidekick Windsor Davies doing their act whispering green grass in the water splash great memories wonderful place to be ❤ well boys thanks for the 🎥 lovely stroll c u 2mora all the best John 😊😊
Hi John, yes I remember when Windsor Davies was over. Did you ever see the Krankies John? They were actually very funny and generous people........and they seem to turn up everywhere on TV. I've got you the railings gig.........£5 an hour and all the beer you can drink, plus a bag chips at the weekend! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣👍🏻
Hey Tom a walk along here listening to Between Two Points would be well worth it 👍
Hi Lloyd, I still love that song and when David Gilmour comes in with his solo near the end it never fails to bring a tear to my eye for some reason! I hope that you are keeping well mate! 👍🏻
I could almost have written your script for you today Tom. One of mt cozens from Jersey, Gordon Chapman, took me to the Watersplash for my 17th. birthday. As you say it was a club in those days with some quite exotic acts. Not to mention that a bit of under age alcohol was also consumed. Yes, those were the days.
😂🤣 Nice one Malcolm! Yes, those were certainly the days! 👍🏻
Thanks for the history lesson Tom, I certainly didn’t know when I moved to Jersey that the Island is steeped in history. The railings I wonder who is responsible for them as it goes through three parishes or is it the states responsibility ?. I used to go to the water splash when I first moved to Jersey. I was friendly with three Jersey Guy’s I worked with and was asked if I wanted to go with them on the Saturday to the water splash. One guy was a surfer and had a VW van so off we went had a great evening and picked up four girls. On the way back to one of the guy’s homes we were stopped at a road check in St Peter and he knew one of the guys. We all had a skint full and to my astonishment he said ok straight home now and enjoy your evening. So it’s who you know and things are probably much different today. Cheers 🏌🏻♂️⛳️ 🐕🦺.
Hi Ted, yes things were very different back then........I seem to remember we used to head down in three cars. Of course no-one would even think of doing that today and that's why a lot of the country pubs have struggled! I just had a quick look at all the comments before replying and it looks like John Mullin has volunteered to paint the fence.......so we are sorted! 😂🤣😂🤣🏌🏻⛳
Good on John, should keep him busy for a couple of years.
😁😂🤣
Hi tom ,have you ever considered showing the german bunker locations, ? In france ,normandy the french have practically built their economy on the german fortifications. Its a thought for your channel, if so you can purchase a map at the german underground hospital now renamed jersey war tunnels .giving the locations of these bunkers and exsplaining their individual positions of defence. Or you could consider showing the filming locations of the bergerac series ,that is still showing on tv throughout europe .it might interest some viewrs .?? I noticed paddy tried to slip down the steps to the beach tom😂 a lovely walk tom
Hi Brian, both your suggestions are really good, so thank you so much for the feedback. I have to admit that I know very little about the German defenses, so feel like I would have to do quite a bit of research in order to do the subject justice. As for Bergerac locations I think that that may well be a winner, if only I had ever watched any of it! 😁Of course the new series is out in February and I will be watching. Yesterday I looked at Episode 1 of Series 1 of the original, so maybe I will get to know it after all! Paddy is always trying to head beach-wards.
Good morning Tom! Looked like a nice enough day to me. Really like hearing the history of the places you walk past. We don't have near the rich and full past here in the middle of America. Thanks again!..plenty of excitement for me! 😂
Good morning Robert and thank you so much for watching and commenting from all the way over in the middle of America! The world today is a strange place isn't it? The thought that people from all areas of the world are some of the group who watch my small channel is very rewarding to me.......so thank you! 👍🏻Oh and thank you for the feedback! 👍🏻😁
Oh the memories 😢this brings back from the portelet hotel.
Hi Stephen, I hope the memories were good ones my friend! 😁👍🏻
Hi Tom, we are moving over to jersey in the next couple of weeks, so hopefully will bump into you on a walk with my springer called Finn. Cheers Chris
Hi Chris, welcome to Jersey and be sure to give us a shout if you see us when you are out with Finn! 👍🏻😁🐕
Happy new year Tom to you and the family. As I’m seventy in two months I’ll settle for the healthy bit and hopefully playing good golf. St Ouen was always a favorite of my dad, and on a visit one year we had lots of time to kill before his flight home. He wanted to go to El Tico for a Jersey cream tea and sit and watch the surfing out in the bay. We sent him off a happy man, as my dad loved Jersey and my sister would tell us he wouldn’t stop talking about his holiday for a month bless him. Good golfing Tom, and please think about filming a couple of holes with your brother or friends at the Royal in 2025. Cheers 🏌🏻♂️⛳️ 🐕🦺
Hi Nic, lovely story about your father - thanks so much for sharing that with us! I will definitely film a few holes in 2025! Happy new year to you and your wife! 😁👍🏻🏌🏻⛳
Hi Tom, wishing you, your family and all your followers a very Happy New Year. Thanks for this lovely video which brings back many happy memories of huge ice creams from Le Bray cafe (Jersey ice cream is just the best), and many walks the length of the bay, sometimes in pretty dodgy weather. I'm so looking forward to coming back in May, but lots of videos to enjoy before then. Take care and happy walking 🚶♀️
Hi Valerie, Happy new year to you and thanks so much for supporting the channel all through 2024! 👍🏻😁
Hi Tom A Very Happy New Year to you and Angie and may it be healthy too, St. Ouens Bay is the best place to clear the cobwebs away . The Watersplash which is coming up on the walk later has fond memories with the lads and some girls from Southampton😍🤭or was it Ticos 🤔. I do not bother with NY resolutions as now I cannot remember what I was doing yesterday 😅Take care matey all good my end 🙏
Happy New Year to you Lloyd........all the best mate! Yes, I remember you have fond memories of the Five Mile road! I'm like you........the old memory is shot to pieces! ☹️
Hiya Tom heading towards a good place for brekkie Le Braye cafe 👍👍I have never noticed you moaning 😊😊aint that normal nowadays 😁
😂🤣 Nice one Lloyd! The teeth are now in mate so at least now I'll be moaning with nice Hampsteads! 😁👍🏻
Beautiful scenery as always. Looking Forward to seeing many more or your adventures this coming year. And Looking forward even more to my own starting next week when i make my first visit this year. Thanks for letting us tag along again.
Hi Robert, thanks so much! I'm worried for you..........the weather has been pretty poor and although we are determined to play golf first thing tomorrow, I'm not sure it will happen! ☹️I really hope that you get some nice weather! 🤞🏻
Hi Tom. A beach🏖️ is always my happy place .. So now to wish You, your family and all the gang who come on here commenting every day. A Very Happy, Healthy and prosperous New Year. Until next time ☘️☘️
Hi Christine, a very happy new year to you and your family! 🎇🎆👍🏻
In 1987 my wife and I visited Jersey for the first and only time. We very much enjoyed several walks along the north coast including Bouley bay, Bonne Nuit bay and Greve de Lecq. The wonderful views out to sea from the top of the cliffs, the various brackens, gorse. heaths and heathers, oaks and broom, and the twisting narrow paths down to the harbours in the bays still live in our memories of a memorable holiday.
Hi Jim, thank you so much for taking the time to share that with us. 👍🏻 I don't know if you are aware that you can find walks to and from all of the places you mentioned, on my channel. If you have the time.....check them out! 😁

Happy new year to you tom and your family and all your dedicated subscribers and your regular commentors for 2025 , the whole stretch of this coastline from corbier to crosnez is truly amazing, great news with regards your medical tom , i think its down to that reluctant outdoorsman bloke and his pacemaker doggy paddy g has had something to do with it .😅, thanks for bringing great joy in 2024 , and no doubt to us all for posting your walks on this magical island and bringing back memories to those who can no longer visit .
😂🤣 Hi Brian, thank you so much for all your posts of late and have a fantastic 2025! You are too kind my friend! 👍🏻
May 2025 be a healthy and contented year for you Tom, on this walk you remind me of the summer of '62, The WaterSplash Night Club, (Elegant in those days), drumming for Ronnie Hilton. To differentiate twixt, the cast called Hilton, Ronnie and I became Young Ron. A name I embraced then as now, only then it was true. All the very vey best and thank you from........Young Ron.
Hi Young Ron, thanks so much for posting.......and great memories for you huh! Have a top 2025 my friend! 👍🏻

Hi Tom. Well that was a pleasant surprise today. You are spoiling us this weekend .. I fell your pain. So do half the country atm I'd say.. Sore throat 🤮, bad chest etc etc not to mention the restless uncomfortable night's .. Sure We can all have a moan together 🤣.. Best medicine = rest, fluids.. So I'm told 👍 Take care ☘️☘️
Hi Christine......I only realised it was the weekend at the last minute on Friday night, so had to rapidly do some editing to get the two videos out! Yes, I've noticed that people everywhere seem to be under the weather! I have been doing nothing for days now and cancelled golf for tomorrow! Fluids........mmmh, it just may be lager o'clock! 🍺🕰️😁👍🏻
