The reason this movie works so well beyond the slapstick is the character comedy. It's really well-cast. I can't imagine anyone else as Harris, Tackleberry, Lassard, Jones, etc.

Why were we supposed to root for Caine? He had no hopes or dreams, he wasn't good at anything. He didn't secretly write poetry, he wasn't a secret math genius or even an athlete.
