Oh wow I've watched multiple videos on goth fashion and I think yours is the first to clearly point out that trad goth was not all black and white like the pictures might lead to believe, but did use plenty of colour! It's so funny, this is kind of like thinking that colour was invented only recently and that everything used to be black and white before lmao I used to be a wanna be goth when I was like 11, then I had a phase where I hung out with metalheads but didn't really dress like them, then I completely diverged from goth styles until recently, and now I'm kinda goth in both the fashion sense and through the music I listen to! I just love everything goth, from Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Brontë to Vivienne Westwood and DIY alternative fashion <3
What great journey! I think goth most of all about seeing the darker things in life as not all bad, and finding joy in things beyond the basics. If you’re interested, check out the documentary in the references! it’s quite interesting to see interviews with all sorts of goths in the 90s, they’re all so cheerful and thrilled with their choices but also very pragmatic about the discussions of why people choose to dress up, put make up on, and everything else in between. Really glad you enjoyed!
just stumbled across your channel by chance! amazing video and so well put together, ive already subbed <3 im an art student from the uk (whos a bit of a punk) and your vid just showed me how i SHOULD be presenting my research! you are super underrated and im honestly annoyed that you havent got more attention. Def sharing your channel to my mates xx
<3 so glad you enjoyed and this gives me the motivation to keep going :) thank you

Thank you so much 😊 I appreciate the kind words!
I really like your interpretation of fashoin history and i wish you would go more of depth in that lane especially in the status and social signaling through fashion<3
Thank you! This was the very first episode introduction to the show, I hope to get to explore all these topics more in depth in the future :)
thanks for making my art assignment for researching an artist more bearable with this really well made and interesting video :) i love vivienne and this video helped me to learn so much more about her !!
so glad to hear that! If you need to find any of the references, make sure to check the description 😊

16:20 "art is eternally self-referential and policing it is against the very nature of art" girl... THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU JUST DID! Galliano for Dior, Gaultier in his prime, Westwood, McQueen...wouldn't have their most iconic collections if they listened to your pontification about cultural appropriation. You think you're virtue signalling how sensitive you are to marginalized groups but you're really just stifling creativity and setting up a slippery slope argument where the inverse could happen and westerners could gatekeep western fashion from the rest of the world.
Not sure if you watched the rest of the discussion on this, but I actually agree with you. However I do believe it is valuable to include context, and I don’t think this gate keeps or stifles it by encourage crediting and appreciating the inspiration. I think it enriches art to carry on its evolution without forgetting its past! 😊
@@bymayaginzburg I did watch the rest. I'm surprised you agree with me. You also said something like, the line between inspiration and appropriation is razor thin and I would err on the side of caution. That doesn't really convey agreement. This mentality of being afraid of offending is probably one of the main reasons why current fashion is boring and there's not a lot of unique POVs. And that's just my opinion on it.
@@andrewjones9991 I think the line is thin, and erring on the side of caution is taking the space to reference and research the history of your inspiration. Perhaps I could have said it in more words, but I think that if you’re not willing or able to respect and pay homage your inspiration properly, you might as well not do it. Even outside of cultural things (art styles, design aesthetics, literature, music etc), not crediting those who came before you is in equally poor taste, just not as controversial. At the end of the day, it is up to each artist to be able to respect themselves and their own work within their sphere. These are my personal feelings upon it. We all answer to ourselves in the end right?
thank you for the amazing analysis! well deserved growth and prosperity to your channel!!! 😀🥰
thank you !!
LOVE UUU

Such an awesome project! I would definitely use the skating pads, maybe even sew them into the costume. I stumbled upon your video which works perfect as inspiration for me, as i am also doing chani and paul for halloween with my boyfriend! Do you have any suggestions on how to do it as simple as possible? I'm thinking combat boots, biker shorts (it's hot where i live) but i'm not quite sure what i can do for the top part. I wish i had my old skating pads lol
not sure where you’re located but a larger size thrift store (think salvation army, value village) tend to have a good variety of pads, or you might be lucky too at a smaller thrift! I think with what you describe and being a warm place, maybe greyish black tight t-shirt to go with the shorts and stick some shoulder pads in! If it’s a fitted shirt they shouldn’t move around, and you could find a pair at a dollar store, or sewing shop! For the shirt, you could check out the athletic clothing section for some sort of heather dark grey tee that has interesting seams on it! Or if you use a regular tee you could sew in some easy seaming that’s reminiscent of a still suit! hope that helps!
@@bymayaginzburg I hadn't thought about shirts with interesting seams! I'll definitely look for something similar, thank you so much for the tips :)

thank you! Anywhere in particular you’d be hoping to hear about? I can add it to the list :)
@bymayaginzburg I think a lot of Asian and Middle Eastern fashion is beautiful and complex - but tbh I'd also love seeing videos about specific fashion to the US (Midwestern, 90s models day out, etc!!), or even fashion trends!
U r so cute and talented !!!

Taken too long? You were dealing with a concussion and were sick. You need to take all the time you need to rest and recover. Your health and wellbeing are #1and if you don’t have that all else suffers. Loved this podcast episode ❤️🔥
In Poland we had "kociaki", "kittens", women following western fashions and lifestyle, their male counterparts being called "bikiniarze". I've read some bizzare and very badly writted articles trying to ostricize them in fashion magazines from the late 1940s.
That’s so interesting! Do you have any idea if they were politically motivated subculture? Or similar to stilyagi in their escapist attitudes and rather apolitical?
@@bymayaginzburg probably apolitical
We think the gift is STUNNING !!! ur the cutest ever
🥹❤️❤️❤️
Also awesome video! Very informative and i love the more socio political exploration of the world in which her art existed too i love how indepth this is with her history and history of her inspiration Also note on appropriation, its not just adopting a culture's items into one's art. Its when you take something and "pervert it", eg qipao. Making a qipao inspired item and crediting chinese fashion history is appreciation, sexualising it and not crediting the culture from where it came is appropriation. Same with closed practices. Esp if the appropriator is one who has more systemic power to influence. Its the power dynamics and the mutual consent of mutual understanding. Im a loyal fan now within 30 minutes.
what a lovely and insightful comment! Glad you enjoyed, more episodes coming soon :)
“Airing on the side of caution” was def not her style. Love the video!
Yeahhh he was a dick. Sorry. Imagine what she could have accomplished with a loving supportive partner 😢❤
If we are doing this let's discuss Modas Riga sewing patterns!
Rigas mode comes a bit later after the stilyagi, as the movement started to wind down, but is super interesting as one of the first soviet fashion magazines that opened the door to custom fashion, fashion plates and trends in the soviet union!
@@bymayaginzburg the diagrams (language aside) may seem intimidating at first but once you figure out your size the fit is much better than the Big 4s. Thank goodness for the translate function in Google Lens🙌🏾. Looking forward to the future video!
