Sechelt Rapids at Skookumchuck Narrows - Full Tidal Cycle
มุมมอง 1.4Kปีที่แล้ว
The Sechelt Rapids are sometimes mistakenly called the Skookumchuck Rapids. These rapids near Egmont, British Columbia are the result of tidal flow in and out of the Skookumchuck Narrows. Tugboats have been overturned in these waters which produce giant eddies and wave high enough for people to surf kayaks on. I spent a whole say out there in August 2012 with my wife Waltraut and dog Pinot to w...

Thank you so much ..Greatings from Germany
Gern geschehen. Freut mich, dass ich helfen konnte
Thanks for the video! I'm just about to replace the two seals and found that I also have two groves in the shaft. The thick shim to offset the seals is a good idea that I will copy. Do you have the measurements for that shim?
All dimensions are in inches. OD: 2.00 +- 0.005 ID: 1.265 +- 0.005 Thickness 0.125 +- 0.010 Material: aluminum
Is there any way to just tighten the existing string? My blinds aren't broken, but some of them don't close tightly anymore and allow more light in than others.
Tightening the existing strings is not possible.
Shane, thank you very much. Extremly helpful video! I had exactly the same problem, and this brought me on the right track for fixing it! Gilbert
Hey Bro, Nice explanation. You might give the ID and OD of the shim you had made so people can have it made beforehand if they don’t have the dimensions. Ian
I’m glad I could help. Not a big viewership for this type of video but it is nice to know that I was able to help a fellow sailor.
As someone that's considering Pella casement windows (possibly with blinds) would you recommend simply adding a custom blind to the inside of the Pella window frame instead of the in-window Pella shade? Or would you simple go with another window?
I would go with another window brand. Since you are buying new, you should get the benefit of a warranty that covers everything. That avoids vendors finger pointing at the other guy.
Nice video. I did this job a few years ago. Rather than using a door, I used cable ties to hang and work on the blinds. For people taking this on, I would suggest replacing both the ladder strings and the lift cord (drawstring) - even if they appear to be in good shape.
27:06 This video provided all the information and images I needed to repair my Pella blinds rather than wait 6 months for a technician from the company. Mine are older and slightly different with drawstrings to operate all functions, but the basic repairs are the same. Thank you for these detailed instructions and clear videos.
I’m glad this saved you some time and aggravation!
what lake do you live on? it looks fantastic!
I live on Cadle Creek which is a tributary to the Rhode River which connects to Chesapeake Bay.

Thanks so much for posting this - I needed it. Any advice about finding pulley parts? - now I have one with a pulley belt that slips over the wheel and so can’t raise/lower it 😬
You can buy replacement belts and pulleys from Pella. They come as a kit for around $100. Most of the time I found they were not needed if the blind mechanism works correctly. You can increase the tension in the belt by shortening it on or two teeth on the belt.
@@shaneyanagisawa9630 Turns out a little rotating piece at the top was broken so I ended up with a new pulley - works fine now!
Ah thank you for posting this! We recently moved to a different home and while I love the windows, some of the blinds have stopped working and I was afraid I’d have to have someone come out to fix them!
You are so welcome! Nice know someone is benefiting from my experience.

I'm glad I could help.
In 2008 we built a house and selected Pella Designer Series triple pane windows. Now all of the blind strings are failing on the blinds and Pella will not supply the needed repair parts. We paid $160 each for the blinds in 2008. Now Pella wants $682 each if we were to replace them. Based on other window issues we've had over the years, we conclude that Pella doesn't stand behind its products and it also doesn't support customers after the sale. It basically gouges its customers after the sale if there are any issues. If I could do it over again, I would go with Marvin or Anderson.
Pay a premium price for Pella and they offer no support for their blinds. The ladder cord broke on mine, they have a too bad attitude. I sent mine to a place called OEM Blinds in Taylor Michigan, they said they maybe able to repair them, we will see when they get back. Pella sucks.
@@cz_ww2117 how did the repair go. We’re having the same issue and Pella does indeed suck. They quoted us 700 bucks to replace and 200 bucks to install. Wow. Create something chincy and the money keeps rolling on in. Please advise and maybe we will send ours there too. Thanks in advance!
The locals called those kayakers fools
is there a way to change the starting point for the adjuster? my wife is short and the adjuster is high in the start position.
Yes, you can lower the adjuster knob somewhat.. Lower the shade all the way, then remove the shade. Set the adjuster knob where you want it in the upper position and the reinstall the shade. If you haven’t set the knob too low, there should be enough travel to raise the blind all the way.
I can’t tell you how much I appreciated this video. I too had the “can’t be repaired” response from Pella with an absurd quote ($750 plus $195 service call) for replacement. Your step by step tutorial was spot on, and although it took me an entire afternoon I was able to repair and reinstall my broken blind and it worked perfectly on the FIRST ATTEMPT! And now I know how to repair Pella blinds. awesome!!!
I'm glad my video helped rebuild your blinds. I had to learn to do them myself because no one in the area would rebuild them. Now they are all rebuilt and I'll probably never rebuild them again so I'm happy that someone else could profit from my experience.
I’m glad I could help.
My blinds don’t close fully. The lever that operates the up and down has a tendency to skip and therefore doesn’t close all the way. Do you have any ideas? Thanks Gary
The lever operates a toothed rubber belt in the window frame. The belt is skipping over the sprockets because the drawstring is going bad and is binding up on the rod that rotates and pulls up the drawstring. It is also possible, but less likely, that your rubber belt needs to be replaced. You can get those from Pella at $100 a pop. I make the mistake of buying three of them when it was the drawstring mechanism. That's why I made the video.
@@shaneyanagisawa9630 Thank You for the information. Much appreciated, Gary
I was able to remove the blinds from all of my windows thanks to you. Much appreciated.
Please give me a like if you haven't already.
Do you know what size of the lattice for the Pella windows?Do they come in different sizes?
By lattice, do you mean the ladder strings that support each slat? Yes, they come in different sizes. You need to get what matches your existing blinds. I do say in the discussion on tools and supplies where I obtained the ladder string and the cost.
Yes thank you!!!! Also Pella wants you to pay big bucks for new blind for your window
Hi! In order to figure out the ladder size do you need to disassemble or can you measure it while the shade is still assembled? Can you just replace the draw strings? Thanks!
Yes you can measure the ladder strings while they are in place. Just open up the inner window to access the blinds. You can replace just the drawstrings but it will only be a matter of time before the ladder strings fail.
Ohmygosh. Where were you when I first started having to do this? I want to jump out of my windows when one starts to fail. Until today, I have only faced drawstring failure and just had to do the “inside outside” slalom exercise. But your two sharp knives technique is a game changer for attaching to the drums. Sometimes I am able to melt a new draw string to the old one and pull it through. That’s a happy dance day. Well today I have a broken ladder string and I’m so glad I found your video. Thanks so much!!!
I'm glad I could help. After all the learning I went through, seemed a shame to let it go to waste.
Thank you very much for this video! Pella repair told me that my blinds couldn't be fixed and quoted me $773 to replace my between the glass blinds on my large bay window. And that was if I did the installation myself. Although my blinds were a little more complicated than yours because there were three columns of draw strings and ladders strings, I was still able to use your video to learn how to restring my blinds for $45. You did such an excellent job of explaining how things work that I was able to figure out what to do with the extra column of strings. Now they work as good as new! Thanks again!
I’m glad my video helped. That was the whole idea. After my ebad xperience trying to buy Pella replacement parts and not being able to find anyone who would restring my blinds, I thought my knowledge shouldn’t go to waste.
Thank you very much for making this video - super helpful in getting my windows opened up to clean and adjust. BTW - nice view in your backyard!
Glad I could help. That is a tributary of Chesapeake Bay in the background.
I am considering getting Pella triple pain doorwall with mini blinds between the glass. Was it worth the extra money? Mine would be on West facing window so I’m concerned about the sun weakening them over time. Do you have 3x pane glass? Do you have the newer belt pulley system or strings? I understand the belt can wear out too. I think I know all the advantages. Tell me the disadvantages.
I have the 3x glass with the belt drive. The belt drives are reliable. I mistakenly thought that the belts were slipping and I bought a replacement belt but it turned out that the belt was ok. I was just the blind mechanism binding up that caused the belt to slip. The blinds stay clean inside the window.
Many thanks for this video... it saved me a lot of pain
I'm glad the video helped. That was the whole intention. Since I went through all the learning curve, I thought it a shame not to share with others.
How long does it take to completely repair my mini blinds, ladders, cord etc? Is it possible to contact you Shane? What state are you in?
I can do a blind in about two hours. Took me three to do the first one. I am not in the business of rebuilding blinds.

@@lisalaratta6184 I have the tripleane windows with the belt drive. The belt drive is ok.. when the belt skips over the pullies, the cause is usually the draw strings failing and binding in the mechanism. I live in Maryland. All my south facing window blinds started failing 12 years after installation. If you live in a southern state, blinds will last less than that. 0:04
Appreciate you posting this Shane! Sorry for your loss.
