Stormlight Archive Painting - Kaladin & Syl | Holbein Gouache in Etchr Sketchbook
Ending the year with a new sketchbook, the conclusion of the first arc of The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson, and a much overdue painting of Kaladin and Syl. My only other painting of this duo was back in 2018 and I never finished it - let's remedy that.
Wishing you all a wonderful end to 2024 and start to 2025 :)

Looks fantastic, I'm hoping to get back into reading in 2025, so some Sanderson is on my list (although I'll probable start with Mistborn I think)
Thank you! I also started with Mistborn 🙂
You made the skin look so smooth 😍 I love how you did his brand and the hair feels luscious. I wanna touch. 😅 Yes, they do cover their left hand.
Thank you! 🥰 Yeah I don't know why I had sudden panic I mirrored it 😆
Enjoyed video found it interesting thank you for showing us your creative art process.📒✍🖌🎨💙happy holidays🎆🎇🕛🥳
Thank you and Happy New Year to you too 🎇🎊
I can't believe it took me this long to come across your channel! I normally watch most of the random art vids on incognito mode (so my recommendations don't get swamped with content based on a recent obsession,) but I really liked a lot of what I saw and especially heard during the video. When you said "too many hobbies, not enough time," I was like, this person is my doppelganger, I must subscribe. That, and what you were saying regarding channels that swatch and don't attempt a sample painting and how you feel about it, as well as the fact that you painted a portrait, they all spoke to me. And the fact that you opened with "You don't need more paint, you don't need more paint, you don't need more paint," as I had literally just finished buying more paint from Blick before watching the video. There was too much resonation to not say something.
Oh this made my day, thank you so much! I hope you enjoy your new paint! 🥰 And I think I needed someone to send those reminders back to me by quoting me.. I do not need more paint 😆
I love the colors, but i need more transparency. I do botanicals and can't make anything function with opaque layers 🤣😭 im browsing and trying to find my must haves.
That's fair. I honestly don't use these too often and I wonder if that's why. The colors are lovely on their own but they can be a bit heavy.
@briwidmerart im looking at American journey as well. I had some old paints found at a thrift store, and the paints were amazing. Idk. I've been using Sennelier for years, and i adore them. But I wanted to try something new. .
@juupiissocool I've never heard of American Journey! I'll have to look into them. I actually haven't really used Sennelier either, though.
HAWT
😆 thank you!
LOL! I ask myself your title ALL THE TIME!!! I have more paints than I will EVER use in my lifetime, haha! I added the colors from the next set, with the tubes, that were missing from this one. Took our Raw Umber since when watered down, the yellow ochre was close enough. Plus, you can drop another color in with it to make it raw umber, I just forget which since I don't rock it. I got a nice set in the end. The sepia is a must, though, for sketching.
🤣 Why do we need so much paint? I added magenta, phthalo turquoise, and nickel azo yellow and it is a perfect little palette for me now 🥰
Man now I want to paint a winter themed painting on this glittery paper 😅 Your painting turned out gorgeous!
Thank you! I should definitely try a snowy landscape but I.. don't understand snow 😅
great use of the glittery paper to make a snowy/icy painting! Glad to hear Juno is doing well, her siblings are currently freezing in the north XD
Thank you! Hope they find a nice and toasty spot. Juno isn't handling the cold as well as she used to but she stubbornly insists she wants to go outside anyway 😅
Spoffbook tiiiime! And Junoooo
🥰 now I need to go to your channel for ink time!
Yay for our favourite big fluff! 😍 The painting looks AWESOME! About the flip-through - you could go through the pages and use sticky notes to cover the stuff. Waaaay less editing. Lots of sticky notes tho. But if you filmed in let's say quarters, you could reuse the sticky notes. 🤔
Thank you! Yeah I considered sticky notes and doing it month by month but I'm not sure I have enough sizes. I also had to go through it 3x because I would miss things so even with stickies I'd probably have to redo some 😅
So pretty! Stop making me want glitter paper!!! And yay, Juno footage <3
Hehe get the sparkles ✨️ I think it would be super fun for ATCs.. if i can get back into those... Thank you!
@@briwidmerart OMG it would be good for ATCs 👀
@amberzartwork1466 tis the season for enabling 😅
The way my jaw dropped when you mentioned you read stormlight archive 😭 the painting looks sooo great! Love the yellowww
Thank you! 😆 Stormlight Archive is one of my favorite series. I really, really need to do some more fan art. It has been a long time.
I"m mesmerized by the process and seeing the painting build up!! Its beautifull!!!
Thank you so much 💙
This was such a lovely video. Thanks for letting us into your life and for showing us your process. Your art is gorgeous! 💘
Thank you so much 🥰💛
I'm not into yellows but I adore this painting 😍
Thank you! There was something about this image that made yellow win me over 💛
Your unique touch and nice technique really shines in this size paper 💛💛💛
Aww thank you so much 🥰
This was a lovely video and a lovely painting. Thank you
No, thank you 💛😊
Bri, we're old(er), of course ya books won't be as enjoyable for us as before, don't feel bad about it :D And yes, they feel the same for me too mostly. OMG Juno, I love her❤ The painting looks so good! You did a POC AAAND yellow? Wow.
Thank youuu 🥰 Nah you can say it.. I'm old 😆 But I really do like Elatsoe. I think the only other YA book I read this year was A Tempest of Tea and you got to hear my confusion over that one. Such a pretty cover though!
@@briwidmerart A Tempest of Tea was...not good! I had luck with some ya books this year thankfully but i'd say it was 50:50. No idea until I go through stats at the end of the year 😆
I loved watching this flip through of your tiny art pieces while you chatted. It's inspirational and lovely. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! 🥰
Good for you! Yes, YT likes videos that encourage people to buy, buy, buy, and waste, waste, waste. I've also decluttered my art supplies, several years ago, and it was part of my no buy. I've also become very mindful when buying any new supplies. I've made the occasional buying mistakes when they didn't work the way the manufacturer said or I thought they would, but that's okay. I've passed them on to other artists. I want them out of here if I'm not going to use them.
Thank you! I've definitely started purchasing supplies again since my no buy days but I also try to be more mindful of my purchases. I am probably due for another round of decluttering soon. It's hard to give things up sometimes but gifting to another artist brings its own joy 😊 Yay for like minds!
@@briwidmerart I just finished another round of decluttering, and it feels so good to have them all organised, with plenty of space! It also does feel good to give them to another artist, who's thrilled to have them and will use them. Hooray to like minds!
Hoping the best for your furry family member 🥰
Thank you!
7:43 Is it a big fight to give your kitty pills? You should check with her vet to see if you can grind them up into a treat. Some of my kitties’ meds have been easy to crush into a powder, which I then add to a spoonful of Churu treat. I’ve had similar success doing that with liquid meds as well, so much easier than force feeding! Maybe it’s not recommended for her specific prescription, but it could save you a daily wrestling match.
Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately she's on a hydrolyzed diet and can't have Churu. She does fight against pills but the hardest part is retrieving her from her hiding places.. once we get her, it's not so bad. One day I'll finally be able to give a cat Churu 😅 It sounds magical.
I love the lost edges with the hair and the shirt! Glad to hear you faired well during Milton, I was worried it was gonna be another 04/Charley situation for all my people still in central FL but luckily I was wrong. Sorry to hear about Juno, I hope she makes a speedy recovery!
Thank you! Yeah it's really feeling a bit '04, but more impacting Big Bend and the Gulf Coast. I think everyone deserves a nice long vacation from hurricanes. Maybe a decade? Please, Mother Nature?
This came out amazing! Hope you're able to find more time for all the things you wanna get done and hope that things go well ❤ I had also been in the mood recently to getting back into doing some fan art, heck, even painting in general. Work hasn't really allowed much time for it and I miss it so much
Thank you! Aw sorry to hear you don't have the time to paint. Hopefully soon! But yesss all the good fan art 🥰
Beautiful character and work, as always! I hope you made it through Milton ok. Helene was crazy, and though we got lucky here in southeast TN, everywhere around us was hit hard. Hopefully, your damage was minimal and the new roof work goes quickly! It's good to see you painting again.
Thank you! So glad you're okay from Helene. She was such a nasty storm and so many people lost so much 😢 We did okay with Milton (phew!) Hopefully we're all in the clear now for the season.
Love what you said about the denialist crap re Helene and rescue efforts. I live in GA and have many friends in NC. It is very real. Now with the new Hurricane in FL, this is insane. People make these denialist claims bc they don't live there and it doesn't fit into their political narrative and dont want to see what's reality here in the South. Many of these towns are just gone. Families are gone. Houses, neighborhoods, roads are gone and they are not getting relief or help fast enough. We live in terrible times. Hopefully change is coming and fast. Until then, I'll paint and distract myself. SMH
I hope you and yours are doing well despite everything and get back to some semblance of normal soon. Seeing the devastation there and elsewhere hurt so much. I can't imagine losing my home, let alone my whole town. We should be helping each other, now more than ever.
@@briwidmerart unfortunately I don't think it will happen anytime soon with all this political division. It's just so sad. People have lost everything and floods rarely if ever show up in that area of NC, so it wasn't second nature for people to get flood insurance. Just utter devastation. We are fine south of Atlanta, but I know many people were affected in other parts of the state. And we don't get hit that way in GA. It's FL that normally gets hammered.
@@briwidmerart take care of yourself in FL btw. Are you in Milton's path where you live in FL? I know Key West is not in the path and is supposed to get 40-50 mile gusts
@jessicameisner8487 That... is ridiculous and I'm so sorry. A lot of my summer vacations growing up were camping and hiking in those areas and they deserve better for giving us such beautiful views... and the people deserve much, much better as well. We are in the cone. Luckily I'm on the east coast (Brevard County) so Milton will probably be down to a 1 here (though a 2 is in the warnings). Not going to be fun, but it could be far worse. We are shuttered, stocked, and as reasy as we can be. I have family that had to evacuate the west coast though. Glad they left, hoping their home tries its best and that recovery goes as well as possible.
Take care of yourself! I love your channel. My Dad has a home in Sarasota, but he lives in ATL mainly. Hopefully his place is standing after this!
I hope soo much you're back cause I love your videos and your art ❤
That's so sweet, thank you Nina! I'll do my best 🥰
So happy to see new video from you! Hoping everything ends well with you and your family, and Juno of course!
Thank you, Rye! 💙
Hi, is this A6 size?
Yes
Beam paints participate in the painting more than commercial brands. It takes a different approach and I find it difficult switching between the regular and handmade styles of painting. It's a bit like the struggle when switching back to watercolours after painting in oils for 4 months. I find I have to give the paints the freedom to be themselves and negotiate the path to where I want the art to go. If I can do that, the painting turns out amazing. But if I ask them to behave like big brand watercolours, I'm never happy with the results. I can see why they aren't a great match for some painters. I feel lucky that beam was one of the first professional level paints I tried so I could adapt to them without expectation. Just sometimes, I still have trouble by the high pigment load when I paint daily. Haven't had much trouble with lifting, but maybe it's the paper or waiting longer between layers?
Excellent points! It's probably a sign that I should try a looser style of painting where I just let the watercolor flow and settle where it wants to and let it be ... show off its natural beauty. My overworking tendencies bite me here 😅 I will definitely work on that. Oh man switching back and forth between oils ... that's a big shift.
I’m now tempted to do this 😂
I still recommend it! It's so much fun seeing Year 1 again as I'm working through Year 2 🥰
❤❤❤ Very beautiful and stunning, the process of painting using watercolor is truly extraordinary
Thank you! 💙
This is genius!!! I hope you don’t mind C if I copy this idea! Lovely work! ❤
Thank you! Please, feel free to do something similar! I'm still really enjoying it 🥰
I really hope it went well and you had fun! Gosh, I feel the same with digital. Wish I knew it better, but pen/ pencil on paper just feels so much more natural. Besides, traditional media is practically a niche anymore, especially at cons, and it has so much more "soul" (imo). Great job on both items!
Thank you! I fully agree, pencil on paper just feels right 🥰 Unfortunately I had to cancel the trip due to a sick kitty, so now I guess I have ribbons and stickers for next year 😅
@@briwidmerart Oh no, I hope your kitty is doing better! Yep, the goodies will still be good next time.
All those cool colours on legs WOW! It's all stunning! I can't believe you managed to add so much wood detail onto such a small box 👀 and the Princess Donut's sketches are amazing as well
Thank you, Rye! I hope you get your sticker soon 🥰
Cool video cool channel I hope I get one of them stickers
Thank you! If you want to add me on the Dragon Con app (under Bri Widmer) or message me on Discord (@briwidmerart), I can try to make this happen 😊
That is so exciting! And the sticker looks so cool! Good luck with the con 🥰
Thank you! 🥰
Everyone deserves to have a partner who is willing to share the load. <3 You seemed to imply that yours (or someone in your family) isn't pulling their weight. I hope that changes. Please never stop reminding them that you both deserve the best of each other. Best of luck, and beautiful work on this painting.
Thank you 💙 it's a work in progress but we're getting there
this is a really neat idea! I think i'll do this for my 2nd 5 year techo in 2026. I bought my current one in 2021 thank you for the inspiration
Thank you! It must be so satisfying to be on Year 4 of yours. I look forward to seeing mine farther along 🥰
Love your sketch! I was very curious on this paint.
Thank you!
Take all the time you need. Good luck with everything that's going on.
Thank you 💙 you too!
good luck with all the upcoming changes! it sounds like you're ready for a change. have fun at dragon con!
Thank you! 💙
I love watching this! I am an oil painter. I admire your style!
Thank you so much! Oil painting is an amazing medium 🥰
Bri, thank you for the swatching, painting and review! As helpful as it is, it would be great if you’d label the swatches so we can keep track and refer back. Thank you!
Oh, sorry for missing it in this one! I usually try to label it at some point in the process 😣
Thank you for presenting the paints not just in swatches but in a painting, too! Great painting!
Thank you! 🥰
love the cat ❤
I do want to make a note about zoos/aquariums- not all are like seaworld. Many, like the San Diego Zoo, have set THE standard for how to do animal conservation and wildlife preservation- and if the Georgia aquarium's mission is to teach / help us understand how to care for our wildlife- they should be supported. Do your research on accreditations for zoos/aquariums and go support the ones that care! I see this rhetoric a lot online and find it puzzling as ethical zoos/aquariums are some of the only educated voices our wildlife has.
Very fair! The Georgia Aquarium is accredited and works in research, teaching, and conservation. I just still feel bad for such a large mammal to be so far inland, but I'm sure they would release them if they felt they would handle it well. Generally I'm pretty good about defending zoos because my local one does so much rehab/release and also breeding/releasing of endangered species. They just released a 375lb loggerhead turtle they helped 🥰 Sea World (Florida) also does rehab and release work, especially for manatees. Unfortunately not all of their animals have that freedom to be sent home 😞 So yes, you're absolutely correct and I appreciate you responding.
