Van Conversion Modified IKEA Cabinets - Van Life Vlog EP 12
In this episode of our van build series, we tackle the ultimate challenge... making cabinets even more difficult than they needed to be. While we are wood workers, we are NOT carpenters... and we only have a jigsaw, so the thought of custom cabinets was terrifying! We decided our best approach would be to modify IKEA cabinets to fit our van. WOW... we learned that was NOT as easy as we planned. But in the end, with only a few screams and slices of pizza, we made it work!
This journey has proven to be immensely challenging and your support and views really keeps us going, so thank you!

    From experience with furniture on Herold, you must glue every seam along with screws. Always add a washer if screwing directly to the metal of the van.

    Good idea, I was thinking about doing the same thing. Ive seen other that also add some extra reinforcement on the cabinets like extra screws and i think some glue or some tape to help with the longevity a bit. as there will be lots of vibrations and the ikea screws that come with it arent the best. might be one extra customization later on :) Cheers!

    • @PatrickandArthur

      Funny you ask, John! They actually survived very well for 2 years with no issues - BUT we decided to go ahead and switch out for some custom built ones to maximize space better and relieve some stress from constant worry about the weight of the IKEA ones. While they worked fine, and yes they were cheaper, I’d go custom if we did it again. We’re still using the IKEA lower cabinets for the sink etc and that’s doing well.

      Hi Jessie! Thank you so much! We are actually working on a few new videos because we are changing a few things around and getting some help with that pesky plumbing. Have you started your build yet? That's so exciting! We initially bought from Havelock before they were selling boxes so I'm not sure what it equates to, but we followed their recommendation here: havelockwool.com/van-insulation-products/ - If you have a ford transit, you'll probably need 3-4 boxes. I'd learn towards 4 just to make sure you get all those nooks and crannies! Good luck :)

      Hi Linda - sorry we meant for a van. We've had lots of IKEA in our house over the years, but we found that it is quite heavy and a van really needs a lot of things customized for more efficient space saving. Hi Ron! So sorry for being MIA! We did in fact - we found that the best (from a ease and time commitment perspective) was the 3M 90 adhesive spray. www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b40069424/ - I've seen others have success with the twine, but we just couldnt get it to work but were VERY pleased with the 3M!

  • @olly-kai
    @olly-kai 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks great! Here's a tip... the round cam locks on the bottom of your cabinets that lock the connectors (they look like screws) hold the cabinet together. But those can come loose because the vibration of the van, and the cabinet can fall apart. If you add 1 wood screw about an inch away from each connector and coat them with wood glue before driving, that solves the problem. Or maybe I just have bad shocks! Lol

    • @PatrickandArthur

    Hello Arthur and Patrick! I hope you have been out and about and enjoying your van :) My van build came to a screeching halt in June but I am now trying to pick up where I left off. This brings me to my next question for you - When you were adding the wall paneling around the window (specifically, the right side of the window), did you screw through the paneling directly into the metal of the van? If so, what kind and size of screws did you use?

    Which IKEA cabinets did you use?

  • @wendistraight6425
    @wendistraight6425 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You both make me smile :) One question - What size is the wood that you used to make the original frame for the window? Sometimes it looks like 2x2s but at other times in the video, it looks like it could be 2x3s or even 2x4s. And then, I think, you used 1x2s to make it a deeper frame but could you confirm that as well? I have been struggling with how to frame this larger window and would love to re-create what you have done.

    • @PatrickandArthur
      @PatrickandArthur 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t worry - we were (and still are) just as confused ;) We started with the 2x2 but it didn’t come out enough - that’s why we ended up just adding a 1x2 to the back of it (instead of wasting the 2x2s and starting over) and it was just about perfect.

    Well-done gentlemen!! (you are both adorable ;) So I have ordered my havelock wool (YAY!) and I am now preparing to purchase my kilmat. . . THO, I am unsure why the kilmat is not used to cover more the ENTIRE space (before the havelock wool goes in) VERSUS the smaller pieces I see you men using. Would you mind sharing a few words about this? My logic tells me it would be best to more THOROUGHLY (?) cover essential areas with both products.. the kilmat, then of course the wool..) Tho, I have so far not seen one vid that shows this done. THOUGHTS? PS You are both naturals with the camera and do a fun AND excellent job with delivering key information, in a time-efficient manner! x tera

    • @PatrickandArthur
      @PatrickandArthur 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aw thanks so much for checking us out and your kind words! To start, we aren’t experts, so I can’t say for sure that how we did it is the BEST way, but have been happy with how it turned out - both from a sound deadening and insulation perspective. From what we read/saw was with kilmat, covering every inch was overkill and unnecessary. So extra money for not necessarily that much of a difference. It is also VERY difficult/messy to cut through when making holes for water fill, etc. The wool also acts as a sound deadener so you have that to help. We find our van very quiet both in the back and while driving. Hope that helps!
