DIY rebuilds, modification, hacks or just plain crazy stuff to do with running a small scale game animal processing shop. Refrigeration equipment, mixers, smokers, stuffers, every piece of equipment in my shop I have built modified or rebuilt. Walk in cooler builds, air conditioning modification, dry curing meats.

What size units do you run? I have an 8000btu unit in a 7x7x4 building and it’s seems to do pretty good so far but can’t help to think a 10000 would do better
Depending on what temp you are attempting to obtain I would suggest a 10-12k minimum. My main goal on my coolers is to run between 32-36 degrees, for meat storage. Check out the STC3008 video for a great controller as well
Nice job. Doing my own cooler build in my garage
To do a small walk-in cooler does it need to be a digital or can it be an a/c with turn knobs? TY
One of the major factors is BTU's for the size of the box. Most dial knob style A/C units are 5-6000btu maximum. How big is the cooler?
@@scottharrison1489 I am planning on doin one around r25-30 inside my already spray foamed r-15 shop. My plan was a small 4wx6lx8h and already have a turn knob 5,000btu. I wasnt sure if it would work for that space? Thank you for your response.
@@guy-vp5fo On a cooler that size I would use a 10-12k btu A/C unit
What's the power consumption over a 24hr period?
@@z3phyrdok Most a/c unit of this size draw about 1500watts maybe 3-3500 on compressor start up. The compressor on most of my coolers run for short cycles every 10-20 minutes to keep the box at an average temp.
Hey Scott, I always enjoy your videos. Have tried to reach out to you but not connected yet. I'm a small time processor here in Wi. and love creating sausage products. Worked commercially for several years in a locker plant in their sausage kitchen. Love to trade you some of my pictures of my set up. It works pretty good. I've made a inkbird cooler and have a walk in freezer. I'm not sure how else to contact you. Got Polish and Jalepenos Cheddar brats going right now. have a great season.
@@rchunter5061 Dont know the best way to connect. On facebook?
Do you have issues with how long it takes the light to heat up or cool off on the ac thermostat….running the inkbird i set it to shut off if condensor hits.05c….but it will run down to -8 to -10 at times before the bulb cools off enough…..also will get to +5 or 6 before it comes back on waiting for the bulb to get warm
Thanks for the info. I have the red side set, blue side will not go below zero. I have another one from a different vendor coming tomorrow to see if that works
So the replacement blue side still will not go below zero. I switched the sensor in the evap to the #2 and use the blue for the ambient temp in the walk in. It seems to be working and getting close to 34 F degrees. Thanks again for the info.
Hi Scott. Thanks for your post, I am attempting to set up my 8X8X8 meat cooler with this setup. I watched your video and attempted to set it up with the settings you stated. The left, red side, I was able to set it the same as you did. The right, blue side, will not go into the negative digits. You alluded to a video you were going to release helping people program this controller. Any time-line on the release of that video? My controller did not have any instructions with it. Thanks again!
@@jerrywilliams2820 Are you using a STC3008? I've had lots of interest on the STC, Ill try and get around to the video this week. I sure hope they havent change the unit. I know I simply held the Red side down during programming and mine goes below zero.
Yes, that is the unit I got off of Amazon. The left side goes below zero, the right side goes to zero and stops.
@@jerrywilliams2820 Ill have to check tonight
Just checked both go below zero..
@@jerrywilliams2820 Hey Jerry check out my programming video
I am interested…. If it proves itself shoot me a price
Could you make a new video after you test out the new ac control system…. I am in the middle of a building myself and I like the clean look of it, and would love to know how it works for you, thanks Ryan…. Great build
Surf my video I have a videos of how to wire these controllers, I'll add a video on how to program the STC3008 shortly
Scott, thank you for posting so much knowledge. I'm an HVAC tech and I have a question. You stated that you eliminate the electronics. Do you just cut the line? If I understand correctly. I hard wire the fan and hard wire the compressor direct to the inkbird.
Yes I have individually wired the compressor and the fan separately on a couple units I have built. I did find that the Inkbird relays are a little on the weak side though.
@scottharrison1489 thank you Scott. If the inkbirds are weak I'll try to find something stronger. Thank you for posting. Love your site.
@@genelaws3044 Do NOT BUY the Everwell 1609-101 they are junk. Im currently testing one of the STC3008.
@scottharrison1489 thank you Scott. I'm project I'm currently doing for the first time is the window ac converting for walk in cooler. I removed the electronics. My line coming 230v has a white black and green wires. My compressor had the standard three wires C R and Herm. I need to wire in the capacitor. I'm really not sure about the line wires in where they should be placed. I have the compressor red wire to herm, white to common and green to ground. Being a 230v ac I'm having trouble finding the correct capacitor wiring. Basic question I have two hots in the line circuit and need to wire the compressor, capacitor and fan. Do you have a schematic for this type of wiring. Hope you can help in stuck.... Thomas in Columbus
@@genelaws3044 What type of A/C unit? I think you find if you remove the cover that there should be a wiring diagram somewhere on the unit, or good old interweb..
Hi! Total rookie here. Just bought a WiFi Inkbird and I am pretty lost, I just want to build the most basic cold room that can go to like 20 degrees. Can you give me like a couple of steps to help me?
th-cam.com/video/Zy4HXFKDSz0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xIlQEwsETTinpCYX
You could use 2 inkbirds to perform the same task. I have seen the relays fail in them. Please note Im just testing the controllers Im using in the video and not sold on their performance yet
@@scottharrison1489 Hi! Thanks for the reply, the thing is, I am here with the inkbird and an a/c unit and just want to make it go as cool as possible, that's all.
Why don't you use two ink birds At $30.00 Each.
@@maddog45auto66 I have, the inkbird relays dont hold up under constant use on larger A/C units. Maybe something smaller but have been bitten more that once by them.

So how did it work? Are you grinding bones with it? How does it work for that? I have the same interest for making my own dog feed and/chicken feed. I would love to hear how this turned out for you.
This grinder absolutely turn harder bones to a paste. Only issue which I haven't had time to work on is it does leave some larger pieces. Chicken and lamb bone can be ground in a conventional meat grinder for smaller scale
@@scottharrison1489 Can I ask where you got it? I’m in Texas and have been looking for a similar machine. Any info helps out. Thank you Scott

Hey thanks! Glad you like them. Im wayyyy on the West Coast of Canada. Best bet it a drive out into the country or a local meat cutter. Build yourself a smoke easier than ya think.

do you have the rest of the video ? I’m building a 7x7x8 walkin and would love to use this
Hey, check in my video's there is start to finish for this method. This set up was to prove a fact. I built 2 coolers using this method, it does work. I would suggest if you are building a cooler for long term use and ease of use find a controller such as the sf-104 or the stc-3008 they both have 2 temp probes one for the evaporator and one for room. I would suggest this method th-cam.com/video/mt8b_GfLwAw/w-d-xo.html You should be able to use a 15k 120 volt unit for your cooler.
Is there a parts list for this ? I’m thinking of doing the same setup
Not really, built it out of stuff I had kicking around, 1/3 120volt old furnace motor. Princess Auto had the following 120 reversing switch, 90 degree 100-1 gear reduction box, 3/4" keyed shaft and keyway stock, shaft collars. I used a SnapOn 1/2 to 5/8 square drive socket. All the brackets are 3" angle iron
