How did dance music go from underground to mainstream? | Rens Wilderom | University of Amsterdam
Rens uses the “sociology card” when defining what dance music is. In other words, we don’t attempt to arrive at an objective definition, such as one based on a specific BPM. Instead, we assessed-through a co-occurrence analysis-what the field itself considers “core dance genres” and distinct types of music. This analysis shows that house and techno, along with everything that emerged from and after them, are seen as dance. This includes genres like drum 'n' bass, jungle, dubstep, and EDM. However, genres like synth-pop and disco are not classified as dance.
Rens Wilderom received his PhD in Cultural Sociology one year ago. He currently works as a lecturer in Computational Social Science at UvA.

well bad history with chinese diaspora happend in many countries...including malaysia and thailand too...sometimes we need to see within ourselves and see the problems...something need to be changed...Here there is no term Bumi Putera like Malaysia....holding Chinese customs, Chinese festivals and important days is also no problem...chinese writing must be limited otherwise it will become ironic....other tribes also have their own writing but still prioritize national writing...if you want to use Hanzi writing, don't use too much and put Indonesian writing so that other people understand...different languages, different writings makes easier for people to miscommunicate, sometimes even so rarely blend in and mingle with each other, then social friction happend...about language, local chinese languages like Hakka, Hokian, Cantonese etc... agree that it should be included in the school curriculum as local curicullum... since it was also the language of the original ancestors when they came... but not Mandarin, I don't agree either... it is the national language of the PRC... don't try make it into a language that must be mandatory and studied here even by chinese indonesian... there must be more effort through non-formal education such as courses outside...

It’s a hypocrite when you complain about FORCED assimilation while Chinese government built interment camp and FORCED Uyghur, eradicating their culture and language, by put them in interment camp, separating families, forced labor and you said NONE. And something more to add, you will need to look up people like Kristoforus Sindhunata and BKPKB. He and many of the pro-assimilation Peranakans were the ones who suggested full assimilation, from changing name to outlawing chinese culture and traditions in public. In fact, they suggested to completely ban Chinese traditions altogether, which was later reined in. The movement was in a way, a form of internalised racism from a part of Peranakan communities. The movement is not new. In fact, the reason why most Chinese do not speak 'peranakan patois' (and ended up speaking pure Bahasa and Ngoko) was due to the 'speak Mandarin' movement that had started since late 1800s. Of course it was originally an effort to provide education to Chinese children, but the Pro-Qing reformation movement introduced Mandarin instead of Baba Malay and Baba Hokkien as the medium of communication. This was also due to the huge influx of new southern Chinese ethnics in early 1900s. 40% of early 1900 Chinese in Batavia were Hakkas and though Dutch census include Hokchew and Hokchia people as Hokkien, I would assume that was also the case in Surabaya too. In 1913-1914 there were race riot between the Sin Kheks against the Peranakans and locals due to Dutch East Indie's ban on raising Chinese flags. Many of the figures who supported neo confucian pro-reform Peranakans were also of ethnic Hakkas, who found more benefit from changing the cultural and power of dynamics from the Peranakan Tjabang Atas to the New Baba-s siding with the overwhelming number and power of the sin kheks. In essence, the internal purge of old peranakan identities and tradition was continuous throughout 1900s. Even in mid 1800s, neo-confucian Christian Singaporean Chinese travelled to Xiamen to incite rebellion under the name of Christian God to join Taiping Rebellion to overthrow the Qing and the old traditions and religion of Taoism and Buddhism. They were known as The Small Swords Society. That rebellion also became the reason behind the Hokkien-Teochew riot in Singapore later, as well as Teochew Catholics massacre in Singapore. History of Chinese diaspora in South East Asia is very complex and cannot simply be streamlined as sole scapegoating of one singular factor out of many.

  • @bernardlokman5442

Jessica, your answer is not wrong but it is very textbook based. There is some sort of hierarchy but you will need to understand that the way Dutch East Indies deal with indigenous people is different to its foreign orientals etc. Firstly Dutch does not deal directly with indigenous people, as they see the lords and kings of the regions as the true stakeholders of the place. Unfortunately, in places like old Java, caste system exists and commoners are subject to semi slavery. They do not own land and they owe majority of their yield to the landlord and some more to the king. Chinese on the other hand were direct stake holders. In the years prior to chinezenmoord in 1740, fort Batavia, for example, were only exclusive to Dutch, Mardijkers, Ambonese and Balinese slaves and mercenaries and Chinese. During that time, the Sundanese and Javanese lords were not yet stakeholders to VOC's enterprise. On the other hand, Chinese were not given the freedom to own land outside Chinese quarters and get education like the indigenous lords. It was until their children gained peranakan status when they gain the power to buy lands from Javanese lords and dominated the economy afterwards. Please also note that many of these Chinese were actually kidnapped or abducted from vicinity region such as Java, Malaya or Phillipines. So in a way, implying that they were of higher hierarchy compared to indigenous was misleading. Instead, they were governed by different law. Foreigners were governed under colonial law, while indigenous were governed under feudal law under the umbrella of colonial pact.
