NOSFET APEX CHAT
Everything is going to be ok.
I wanted to get this video out before the final upload from my time riding the Apex. I thought I could make a video to sum up everything once all of my ride footage had been gone thru but I'm seeing a lot of tension revolving around the experience I had with stiction and (what I see as) travel restrictions. I don't see these as any reason to ditch the Apex. If nothing is changed the only issue is really firmware, but that is what they are focusing hardest on. The travel/standard shock compatibility concerns could be solved with mods like we have been doing for years. It's not yet clear exactly how often we will truly need to re-grease the sliders, but they should last much longer than our sample unit.
HUGE Thanks to ewheels for providing the sample. Ask anyone, if you ever have any issues with a wheel you got from ewheels it is resolved ASAP.
Lets all take a deep breath and wait for the production units to arrive.

Sounds like you have some faith in the APEX, me too. Do you think you'll be milling/fabricating a solution to the stop-block issue? We're all better off if this upstart succeeds.
I don’t have any experience with fabrication but the people that have been making mods for other wheels will most likely take care of it.
@trubttam My apologies. I didn't mean you specifically. You don't strike me as someone that settles for stock. I figured you'd have someone fabricate that piece to allow the bolt heads (and the rest of the system) to travel the rest of the way. I'm glad you've had the opportunity to review a pre-production unit. I'm watching your Lynx/Extreme video as I write this. Good content. Be well.
@@EUCme Yeah once there are links made for the Apex I will be checking them out, the ability to use high end mtb shocks with all of their tuneability is something I have missed from the s22 days.
Man this trail system looks so fun especially since all the trails near me are full of snow. I need to make a trip to moab this winter and find me some dry trails
When are you getting your Xway? Can't wait to see you put it though the paces!
@@LegitSpeedDesigns it’s getting air shipped out this week I think. So it should be here by December 👍
@@trubttam My biggest concerns with it is going down to only 4 screws on the pedal hanger and the lower bump stops holding up. Especially if you use it to limit travel, the ones on the ETmax doesn't hold up well and it looks to be a similar design.
@ yeah we will see how it goes
Genuine discussion- Great work Brother. Cheers
Sounds like a stroke issue, perhaps available piston shafts are not long enough for the travel on the rails ? What is the conflict with the suspension that the shock stroke is a topic ? Interesting observation about motorcycle manufacture operational maintenance. MTBF. There is no doubt the application of using a wheel has expanded to trail use, which means a different kind of design. I'm sensing the a fallacy "heavy duty" wheel. When really we are talking about reconsidering the technical aspects an "offroad" bike or wheel must have. It's not just shocks on a bike, there are all kinds of design differences from something intended for road use. From the outside, it appears like an exploration of the faster suspension wheels are being pushed into a trail environment they weren't designed for. Someone needs to go talk to Fox and KTM, get a purpose built wheel worked out. Reverse engineering is fun. I'm curious on this pursuit.
Yeah I would honestly pay some serious money for a serious off road wheel that was as reliable as my Yamaha. I really hope we get there someday, sooner than later.
Current US tariffs on Electronics from China are at 25% (officially). The rate is likely to increase soon (with new administration) to 100%! Soon! For a wheel like the Apex, this will mean a retail price increase of over $1k if profit margins are maintained. You can get a V1 and spend that $1k on future upgrades not covered by the warranty, or you can buy a v2, lose ~$1k to Uncle Sam and have a substantially similar wheel at a higher price. Now, I’m the last person to advocate buying ANY new wheel, and especially not a first batch from a new manufacturer BUT, if I were planning on waiting and buying the v2 anyway, I’d probably be assessing whether to save the time and money by buying it now rather than waiting for the fixes that will eventually be standard, if those issues can be addressed in the future with component upgrades, etc. If my time was worth more than the money, I’d pull the trigger sooner rather than later. Basically, you’re looking at a $1000 discount on v1 versus the v2… does that make the decision less difficult? For me, I’m waiting at least 2,years before looking for a used a Apex wheel that someone else has already worked out the details for about $1600-$2k if I’m lucky. {That said, I was waiting for the S22pro to drop to $1.2k-$1.6k before buying and even when I came across an S22pro for $800 in good condition… I still had to reject it because KS effectively abandoned its customers by only doing the minimum improvements necessary rather than redesign the controller and suspension to make it worthwhile in terms of maintenance costs and intervals. Sadly, the long-term value of the s22pro is closer to $500 used because you’re going to need at least 3 of them to ensure parts availability, even if my labor is free. I recently got the SS v1 with ~$600 in upgrades for about $2.5k, saving me about $2k in exchange for a year’s delay. Used wheels are just a better value than new, if patience is possible. 😊
I am really looking forward to Delivery Day for the Apex. Like you, I am currently on a Lynx. I have put nearly 5000 miles (7500KM) on the Lynx in 11 months, and it is an awesome ultra low maintenance wheel. My first wheel was the Patton. The Patton suspension is soft for a guy my size, in fact I can bottom it out at will just by preloading the shock with my legs. The 66lb Patton is also way slower to rebound than my 70lb Lynx. When I am at the jump park it is easier for me to time out the compression of the Patton to pump and jump; therefore, I actually get bigger airs on the Patton than I do on the Lynx; however, landings on the Lynx are far nicer than on the Patton. I am hoping the Apex will give me the best of both worlds with the pump to jump, and the landings. Like you I also have a garage full of mountain and dirt bikes I don't ride anymore. Like you I also have a Sk8 board collection, in fact once upon a time I owned one of the largest Sk8 parks in the USA.
Does anyone know what his chest protector is? I saw the Leatt logo, but I can't figure the model. I'm looking for something with shoulder protection as well and this looks like it's the one!

Hope this vid makes the rounds, because it really covers some important details. The point of those preproduction wheels is to discover and fix the issues that arise. There's a lot of keyboard yelling out there, but on the bright side, that should make nosfet more keen on fixing the details

If they're stating a specific travel, then that's what it should travel, no excuses. Great video, i have mapped out the geometry now and how all the different shocks lengths with fit and with what teeth alignments that paticual shock length should align to. I believe there is alot of confusion about the geared teeth position alignment and where it should match with different lengths shocks. Hopefully the geometry mapping i have done will help understand this. I agree a air shock will absolute feel softer than the coil especially considering the ratio is from 5.0 to 1.7. I don't recall what the specs of your shock are. aligning your airshock to a 5.0 ratio with sag will be a impossible task. hence the high PSI. I mapped out and believe the best option is a 240DNM rcp2s @ 550lbs in geared teeth position 5&6 The seized sliders is sad, see how this evolves.
And this 240x76mm DNM shock at position 6 will still allow for the full “150mm” of travel? I can test this once the production version arrives, I have that shock left over from an s22 and have a 500lb coil I can test with for now
After installing a 210x61mm into position 6 I really can’t imagine how the 240mm would help but I’m open to more details on how you reached that conclusion
It's great to hear your thoughts as you're riding and experiencing the 'problems'. I wish I had your riding skills. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the next one 👍
Why isn’t the barrel of the stanchion just filled with oil? You don’t have to lube the stanchion of the lynx, and the oil doesn’t leak out. Drill a hole in the top and bottom of the barrel of the stanchion, thread the hole, and put a plug in it. Filling from the top drain from the bottom seems pretty straightforward. Then, you will not be worrying about lubing anything. Just change the oil now and then.
@@sherryandpeter they have said there was originally some kind of lubricant in there but it was bone dry when I got to it so it must have escaped. I believe the production units will use a thicker compound than the samples. I also suggested adding a port for adding/draining. I wonder if they know about zerk fittings.
Absolutely! When you begin lubricating through a grease zerk, you're effectively pushing out all the dirt around the seals, flushing it away. This should be the only method you use to add lubrication. Applying lubricant on the outside of the seals, provided the seals are good quality, is just a waste of time.
Sounds like they designed the suspension backwards, usually you would find an OTS shock and design your suspension around it. This seems to have been over engineered on the simplest levels and forgot to think about real world implementation. Like they say things may looks good on paper but may bot perform the same.
@@CBRoadster I’ve been begging for EUC designers to tune linkages around OTS standard shocks since the Extreme. I’m honestly just bewildered that it is not the standard by now. It might just never happen.
@@trubttam I am not surprised honestly. I know the companies "try" to take the communities recommendations to make the next best wheel but you can also tell they hold back, go outside the box to "make a hype wheel" but it is also for profit. I don't do huge jumps so personally I like the SS and SL suspension. The apex could take away the kickstand and spend the money elsewhere on the wheel to make it better and cheaper. I took the kickstand off my L already because i just rest it on the front handle 🤷♂
@@CBRoadster Yeah I could do without the kickstand. I have always removed trolleys and kickstands.
An actual TH-camr that has useful information.
I love the ending, "I'm tired of working on this thing" 🙂 Thanks for your help Matt 👍
Everyone who buys one will have the same opinion.
I still can't believe this wheel has been shipped and everyone is patting jack on the back.
@@skampster I have driven 8500 km on my Lynx, but on my tracks I have places where the suspension hits the bottom and I have to go around these places or get off the wheel and push. The Apex was supposed to be a Lynx with more suspension travel, so I was planning to pre-order the Apex and I almost did. Thanks for the forum and Matt's tests, now I know it's stupid to buy a first wheel from Nosfet. Here in Europe, pre-orders are €3800, and to that you need to add a lot of things like a saddle with a handle, velcro, power pads, pedals or adjusting pedals, experimenting with shock absorbers +- €500 each. Thank you, I'm not interested in pushing a wheel out of the forest every other time. Now I'm going to apologize to my lynx for having already advertised for sale.
@@ludovitstros6783 Ill sum up Nosfet in nutshell. Nosfet is being run by a guy who's ego is far outweighing is ability to make good judgement calls. He so desperately wants the credit for making a wheel more than actually making a wheel that in time will or might make him a ledgend. Jack is the wrong person to run this company. someone needs to take over who is way more business focussed than "me " focussed.
@@skampster Then again, is EVERYONE going to be riding the APEX like Matt does? Not likely.
Consider gluing a ‘bullseye level’ to top for consistent calibration. This won’t help the firmware insufficiencies but may make field calibration easier.
Great video man, it's very interesting. I ride the begode extreme. It's my first wheel. Would you take the begode ds200 damper or from beidhou the linkage and the same damper like the s22! I'm not sure, but you know what you talk about and you rode the extreme wuth the ds200! My next wheel would be a leaperkim but the pedals what they do is weird as f!
When the first air shock got stuck i tried installing the shock from and extreme but it wouldn’t fit into place
might be that the spring rate is too high for your weight with the coil shock, that would definitely make it seem harsher vs the air shock. High preload also absolutely kills small bump sensitivity. Ideally you want no preload at all.
yeah i am very against preload but the sag was so low i tried it, so i dont think the spring rate is too weak (sag) towards the beginning you can see it moves really well. Because the stanchions are freshly lubed
@@trubttamoof sounds like the linkage ratio is iffy then, like the master. It's crazy that you need a 1000lb spring in the first place, that's way too high. It'd probably be better to run the stanchions dry with super low friction seals just to keep the dust out. I hope they can figure out good solutions...
We've had sealed oil filled motorcycle forks for over 50 years now. No reason that same design can't be used, won't be touching a new wheel till that happens.
Yeah, inverted, non inverted. It’s all been figured out already 🤷♂️
that's basically what suspension leaperkim wheels use right?
@@keptickleaperkims suspension is essentially a motorcycle fork yeah. But it has its own quirks, my Lynx’s motor is never straight and can be knocked out of alignment in rock gardens and then I have to kick it straight again.
@@trubttam the CNC mounts with higher torque on the 4 bolts could fix that, it wont deform as much
I believe that the slider/tube system is used to save both weight and cost but it’s certainly not my preference. My preference would be to design the sliders module to be interchangeable with the FastAce hydraulic suspension so that consumers can easily upgrade to a dual suspension system if desired. I actually prefer cheap/ineffectual pedals, trolley handles, power pads and fairings so that each can be upgraded through aftermarket improvements. This slider-tube should be no different. Design to accommodate the FastAce, then sell units with the experimental slider component and let users decide when to modify. Note: Dual suspension systems are neither cost effective, nor necessarily better but the rate of maintenance tear downs on the air-shocks seals alone warrants consideration of some alternatives (which is why the air/coil-over component has been used successfully. One problem with the Apex slider-tube system is that it doesn’t have an internal auxiliary spring {because this would make the height adjustment mechanism significantly more complicated is my guess}, and the dual system will be prohibitively expensive when measured by retail price alone. Take a lesson from the 1960s VW beetle: design for simplicity and aftermarket upgradability and the costs can be competitive with inferior systems yet consumers will prefer the models longevity, utility and maintenance characteristics. {imo}
If they are going to go with a wet system, they really need a better dust seal. If they can't get it to seal right, all that lube is just going to collect dust and turn into muck.
first
Here's what I think part of the problem might be: Since there's no oil in the sliders, the seals will eventually displace the lubricant on the tubes and push it away from the places where they slide. In a fork suspension like the lynx since the stanchions are filled with oil the seals always have a minimum of lubrication, whereas on the apex they might quickly run dry. Soft rubber seals (assuming that's what the sliders use) without some form of constant oil lubrication are just doomed to suck in terms of stiction I think... I have an S18 which unfortunately suffers from the same slider stiction problems. I've done a bunch of mods and tried everything to seal and lube the tubes properly (since the default dust boots don't do much) and I've been running into the same issues with lubricants only being effective for a short while. Next thing I'm trying is low friction seals made out of a harder plastic/rubber along with 0 lube or some dry graphite lubricant. At least the apex has way better tolerances, so it might be possible to sort the stiction out. Hope you or the design team can figure something out!
Thank you for the video! Awesome riding and rambling as always, better get those zippers zipped!
So, there's an issue with pedal behaviour, the stock air shock failed pretty quick, they just changed the size of the coil shock, the stanchions have to be serviced constantly cause they're not sealed, and now there's some resonance problem after a few rides. Oh, and there's still concerns re the suspension adjustment mechanism, and it's gotta be checked constantly to make sure it hasn't come loose. Or people can just keep their Lynxes.
We want this more than a second onewheel, but the price 😭
Hey Matt, first thanks again for the amazing video, important question. what is your final opinion, Is it better to buy the Lynx for heavy offroad, jumps and trails or try the Nosfet Apex?
The Lynx has already proven itself, the Apex seems to be off to a rough start in that department.
Great video! What is your mic setup with your insta360? Having trouble finding a way to mount my DJI Mic 2 so that it's not all heavy breathing off-road lol
All of the audio is coming from the GoPro on the chin, I also have some wind muffs on the mics and GoPro in auto wind mode
">We already got a Lynx at home. >The Lynx at home" sums it up pretty nice. Good effort but better luck next time Jack
@@Pabalhao The Lynx does everything well and asks for nothing in return 🖤
This seems like more headache than I would expect hopefully other peoples experiences are better than what you're having. If all people end up having the same problems you're having it's not gonna go well.
Yeah I think the stiction is going to be the biggest issue with this wheel, they said they had to basically create their own lubricant by cutting thicker grease with thinner lube. At that point, when you have to develop a new lubricant to overcome the friction in your design, you should probably start rethinking things. I can only imagine how hot those slider tubes are getting, its just burning thru the lube or something.
@@trubttam would those rubber fork tubes not work on an EUC to protect the suspension from dust, mud and water? Not sure what they are called in english, but they were used on motorcycle front suspension in 'the old days'..
@@JonahOnEUCyeah like shock boots my first mountain bike had those, I don’t think they would fit into this system tho. They would have to fit into a tight spot with no room to expand outward when they compress, and they would need to go from like 5mm fully compressed to 150mm stretched. I was really expecting the channel that the tube slides through to be filled with oil like a mountain bike fork, but as it is designed now if they did that you would loose all the oil if you wanted to change your tire since you must remove the slider tube to reach the motor bolts 🫠
thanks. great video!
Try a Push 11 - 6 on that thing. 😂. I put it on my electric mountain bike and it is an absolute dream as compared to the other five shocks I tried before that. And it has two completely separate compression and rebound settings all with a flip of a switch. It's super nice because when you're riding on the road you just firm it up and then with a flip of the switch you soften it up for riding off-road.
What we really need is someone like EXT who goes out of the way to make shocks specifically for Surrons to get into the EUC market. I am not confident you would be able to find the right spring rate coil to really take advantage of the Push on the Apex. Perhaps when aftermarket linkages come into play 🙏
I'm amazed how you can talk about a subject while riding on a offroad track with a EUC and also caring for the camera stick at the same time. While I'm riding I just can focus on where to put the wheel so that its less likely to fall off.
😂
It definitely slows me down a lot. It’s like CPU overclocking lmao
@@segment932 it's less the talking and more the camera holding. The second you put the camera away it's much easier to focus and ride fast. It's for this reason that I sometimes prefer to use a chin or chest mount, but it's simply not as good of a perspective for EUC riding.

Yeah but this mtb shock (DVO Topaz) at 300psi (max) is at like 50% sag so I am just using the firm compression setting and riding jumps. It feels bad off road. In 2 days I will have the air shock with upgraded seals and the coil shock to try out.
