icarus Quartet

Like the mythological figure from which it draws its name, the half piano/half percussion icarus Quartet dares to fly towards the sun, aspiring to new heights of artistry. Winner of the 2019 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition, icarus has given new life to old masterpieces as well as the future of their instrumentation. Fostering the development of new works through commissioning and collaborating lies at the core of the group’s mission, inspiring partnerships with titans of the classical contemporary field, established artists of electronic and indie music scenes, as well as gifted student composers through their annual “iQ Tests” program. Larry Weng, Christopher Goodpasture, Matt Keown, and Jeff Stern are all celebrated soloists in their own rights, and together they have found a special chemistry and inimitable joy playing chamber music, combining their classical training with a forward-looking vision of the modern concert experience.
Spark by Matīss Čudars
“A spark is a sudden, brief burst of light and heat generated by the rapid movement of electrons between two electrically charged objects. When referring to a person's demeanor or personality, "spark" can indicate liveliness, energy, or enthusiasm.
In my piece Spark, just like the two electrically charged objects, the pianos (acoustic and synthesized) and percussion (marimba and vibraphone) sets interact with each other, generating rapid movements of electrons, creating lush, aural fountains of glowing particles, propelled by the energetic and enthusiastic music making always present in icarus Quartet, whose artistry breathes life into every note.”

Pretty awful. Remember, the most fundamental fact about ideas and music invented by intellectual at universities. They don't have to work or be pleasant to survive. They merely have to be thought up by a member of a beleaguered minority where any criticism is seen as racist or certainly not sufficiently with it.

This is beauty. This is the culmination of so many artistic visions and is an example of excellence down to every camera angle, scene transition, and performance interpretation. Not only do they play incredibly with each other, but they also seek out audio and video technicians that echo their attention to detail and the result is clear; an album that soars on all fronts. I look forward to the years ahead for this ensemble, because they will be at the top someday soon with the amount of care they are showing in this album. Bravissimo!
