We all know the stories of how creative people get into the business of creating for a living, but how did they start using their imaginations in the first place? On the Beginnings podcast, writer and performer Andy Beckerman asks well-known and up-and-coming comedians, musicians, writers and artists about their earliest creative acts and about other formative childhood experiences.

From there, Seth became a comedy director, directing some of the best sitcoms of the 21st century including Parks and Rec, Community, The Office, The Goldbergs and more, as well as films such as Four Christmases, Horrible Bosses, Baywatch and, his most recent film, which just debuted on Netflix last week, Back In Action starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz! I love Linda Smith’s music. And learning she’s from Baltimore is just an extra. Thanks Linda and thank you Andy for this interview.
this is genuinely one of the best interviews i’ve ever heard with one of the johns. thank you for asking some fresh questions!!
bye oh bye oh bye oh bye oh bye oh bye oh bye oh byeeeee the mic stand
This was a great discussion. Love these guys.
You sound like a victim with all your leftist crap
Greg Saunier is an absolute WEAPON behind a kit, seen Deerhoof live twice, haven't managed to un-blown my mind since.
@Andy Thank you so much for this convo with Andrew Kenny. I was a friend of his and present for the High School days just before he set out into his American Analog Set days. We lost touch quickly after Ft.Worth and it's so nice to hear him talking to you. I feel his engaging, smart, snarky, wonderful personality shining through from 30+ yrs ago. I miss him and didn't really know of his success in music until Wooden Birds - so much much later. What a great story and storyteller. Hopefully, I can make a reconnection to him some day. Thank you again!
This interview is great! I’ve been listening to a lot of interviews with Redd Kross, lately; this is my favorite. I really loved hearing about where the McDonald brothers lived and how they grew up. Great questions!
No one understands how major this is to me. I love their music
I also remember sleeping in a tent on the field that was parallel to our back garden for the whole of the summer holidays as a child !!!
is Tulsa really a starkness of “reality” a reality created & heavily PUSHED in ways that only appear to be counter cultural & controversial by the Man aka the Military & DEA, FDA. operation chaos, fear porn & destabilizing the public as a defense protecting the RULING CLASS & THE STATE. Miles W Mathis “What about the looming government shutdown? Bring it on! It would be the best thing that could happen, if all these crooks would stop spending your stolen money for a while. Shut it all down permanently, including the military, the CIA, the NIH, the CDC, the department of miseducation, NASA, the FDA, and all the rest of it. It is nothing more than a massive conjob and theft from the taxpayers, who not only are getting nothing for their trillions each year, they are getting a brainwashing and mindfick beyond any ever imagined by Mesmer, Marx, Orwell, Bernays, Barnum, Freud, or Crowley. You are being de-sexed, de-dollared, de-educated, and permanently marooned in a nowheres- ville of absolute nullity and inanity, with computers feeding you a constant mash of pretend language, pretend science, pretend art, and pretend events. You are already just a click away from virtual reality, even without the idiot-goggles.” from mileswmathis.com/rupnow.pdf
u don’t need to justify having a gun because it’s for hunting. it’s for protecting yourself & the PRINCIPAL OF THE STATE NOT HAVING AN ADVANTAGE OVER THE CITIZENS. Although they obviously do. Right to bear arms is not about hunting. Boot Lickers
"Class conscious" lol
Very imformative,i love Tim Smith and his music.

Thank you for this interesting and sweet conversation, I love Matt Music The Rentals and his Solo Record are pure Gold, he is also the lost soul of Classic Weezer... I think the guy departure is the greatest regret for Mr. Cuomo.
wait...
Clay will probably NEVER see this, but I heard of Chavez in 1995 and had to drive an hour to Austin just to buy their record because no one sold it here. That meant me, in a truck, with my girlfriend and her ex-Marine father just giving me the side-eye the entire time. I still have my old LP have probably been listening to it and them regularly since then. It baffles me that no one "got" it. It has always made perfect musical sense to me AND my friends. When they released their EP, I snapped it up and I also flew halfway across the country just because they were playing ATP. I'm sure they're all super busy now but I think they should just keep making music.
Soooo awesome. Thank you for interviewing her! She’s a genius❤️👊
This is a phenomenal interview. I couldn’t find it on the podcast iTunes. Thanks for much. This was excellent.
Thanks to Eat-er pie fell. I discovered this and subscribed on my podcast app. Send my regards to the editor in cheese
Having had a difficult childhood did not break John Grant, immersing himself in other languages and living in many different countries is proof of his mental flexibility. I am happy to hear that J. Grant was able to shape so much unjust suffering into tools for understanding different cultures but also the different and very interesting aspects of his personality. Musical talent was a gift that no one could deny he had. Living and speaking in different contexts makes us understand how cultural models are patterns to be used rather than traps to succumb to. Well done John Grant is not only the artist but also the sensitive and multifaceted man that you are to be appreciated and loved.
man, that was an awesome interview. Angelo seems so sweet and genuine. really glad you asked such deep questions, getting into the lens through which he sees the world. wanted to hear more at the end about who he clicks with/why he thinks he clicks with those ppl and can read their emotions but not other people's. curious if he identifies as being on the spectrum
This was an amazing interview! I love that unlike most interviews, it was so deep and personal, and there were no cliche questions. It was really enlightening and strangely healing to hear Jackson's story because I look up to him so much as a writer and artist. Thank you for this!

Great interview. Sorry probably shouldn't have started with being a dick.
Great interview. Wurster is an all-timer.
leaving a note for anyone else who's like me and saw this after looking for Benji's socials and whatnot! I'm a huge fan of everything Benji has made, and from what I can find, nearly all personal/independent social media accounts aside from Crying's official insta and twitter have been lost :( heres the timeline i've sorta gotten: - 2016 this podcast episode was recorded in 2016, but it being released just recently on youtube made me think it was recent lol. this was a great listen nonetheless, really delicate words spoken I resonated with it a lot - 2019 seems like it's been radio silence since 2019 regarding most their primary solo stuff, with "Table for one" being their last appearance, noting "our planet is straightup dying! there's not enough time and i got other shit to do <3". its also noted this release were actually "seven diary recordings from 2017-18", so it's not entirely 2019 ha to me 2019 doesn't seem long ago, but that was 5 years ago! WILD! - 2020-2021 Through Genius, I found that they have newer solo stuff under "ough", which you can find on bandcamp. Experimental stuff it seems, "Bimpo" released in 2020, and a year later, a cover of "TV Wresting" by Foozle. Note: Foozle actually has two songs called TV Wrestling, the one covered specifically is the TV Wrestling from Foozle's album "Everything's Casual" as opposed to "Romantic Comedies". Both these albums were released in 2016, the cover in 2021. Benji writes "foozle cover do you remember foozle i do" under the song on bandcamp (it helped my research a ton). It's a really good cover, from a really good song. this was also when I realized this search is putting me on some crazy good hidden gems! On Discogs, they're also listed for vocal credits for the album "Heaven's Just a Cloud" by Spirit Was (which released 11 days after their cover of TV wrestling, on Oct. 22 2021). it's pretty good stuff! Spirit Was is a project by Nick Corbo of LVL UP, but more familiarly, he was the drummer for Get Olde/Second Wind. "Proven Water Rites" is so far my favorite, listening to the whole album as i write this :P this is another hidden gem, stuff is really good! - 2022* They are also credited in a later release of original recordings from the album on bandcamp. This was in October of 2022, but given it's simply a release of original recordings, technically this is as old as when it was recorded (2021?). In this, they're listed as Benji Santos, in contrast to their typical credit as Elaiza Santos, which is used for Discogs with exception to the previously mentioned "ough" project. I hope I haven't been misnaming them this whole time, info on their pronouns and such are seemingly non-existent ;( Elaiza, Benji, & Z Santos are the names I've seen credited under various works, but Benji seems to be the preferred. - Conclusion i came into this rabbithole thinking theyve been gone after their latest release for Whatever, Dad (Huli Ka 2017), but it seems they've been working in the dark a little! i hope they are enjoying whatever they're working on, I'll be praying for the day they'll make a big return. until then, I'll be listening to everything here on loop till the sun explodes! if anyones got any info id love to hear it <33 thank you for reading (or more likely skimming)! much love!
Will elaiza or crying ever release more music? Please I need it it's soo good 😭
Interesting

I just read Katie Walsh's review of Summer Camp the new Diane Keaton movie. It was one of those reviews that I wish it had some several more paragraphs. "Diane Keaton industrial complex" is a phrase that I will never forget!
