RIP Geoff 😞
I love that bulsa wood lazor zap! Wish i brought it when i had the chance
Would have been good if he explained about the dome positioning and depth in relation to board size or wave size.
Sounds like pro surfing had its dark side, Shane also mentioned about lightning bolt running the sport and pushing their guys through and ripping him many times. Mabey they were also trying to screw Geoff like he said at the same time?
Thanks. My friend whom taught me to surf always raved about and had you make his nuggets, great boards thanks for the intel. 🙏🏽🏄🏿♂️🤘🏿
What about the Stingers ?
As an ex shaper who's dabbling in boat design, I find it very difficult trying to impart surfing design principles to boaters who have no idea of or respect for these principles. Sure would love to have collaboration with knowledgeable surfer/boaters. Cheers
Hi, thanks Geoff and Ian. McCoy boards rock!!!
Awesome Ian...stay upright and safe. 🤙
Hi Ian...I write this as without your channel, I feel there is not much information regarding - McCoy boards and Mr Geoff McCoy. For that I thank you for these videos. Okay, that being said... Health wise and into the future... As a way of eating... "Carnivore" has many benefits. I'm not here to be a salesman or push anything... Only truth with kindness! Cheers, and hopefully you're well, and surfing aplenty while you're approaching mid 60's. That is some quiver you have!
Hi...Thanks Ian, for documenting and having a lot of respect and kindness towards Mr McCoy. McCoy boards, through you Ian, have drawn myself closer to these "Beautiful boards". Through listening, I'm learning how a surfboard should handle and specs!!! Good health to you Ian. Thanks for persevering Mr McCoy...Geoff!
Hi...Goofy Footers Rock!!! Enjoyed listening to yourself and Mr McCoy talking about some history and Geoff's story on another video. Good health and stay upright. Cheers. 🤙
Two good Aussie blokes catching up. McCoy the man, and surfboards = Class!
Hi...Thanks for this great listening. Thanks Mr Geoff Mc Coy. History and very enjoyable.
Hope you had a camera..👮🏻lie lie lie
Love this footage
Thanks for posting this! I am getting a nugget now I am 60ish for that paddling, takeoff and turning power. I always thought that they looked weird but watching the Shred show #37 convinced me this is the board for me.
Agreed. Enjoy.
I want one
Thanks for all these great videos Ian.
I have found that if you want a single fin to turn as good as it can is put the fin right to the front of the box. People have asked how do you turn your 10ft Mal like that, I tell them put your fin fully forward. Single fin for life.
Legend
lots volume there per foot..even more than a desert storm model !
Hi Ian, It's "Quasar", not "Quasor". Regards.
Get a new camera guy… Get a new sound guy… Too bad it’s so convoluted…
I had a McCoy back in the early 90s. 🤙🇺🇦🌎✌️😷🇺🇲
Geoff McCoy is a national treasure. If a human can be world heritage listed, may it be Geoff. Thanks for the videos Ian, really enjoying them. Cheers, Simon
Great boards
Hey Ian, just stumbled across all of your videos on Geoff. Thanks for taking the time to put these up. It's great to watch long videos that aren't cut down. A great learning experience in lockdown. Keep them coming. Cheers!
Beautiful boards,
Thanks for making this video.
Had one of his boards back in the late 70s. It was a cut above then. It was used by Mark Richards to shoot a commercial when he borrowed it in the Bell's carpark when they only had 1 board for 2 guys to run out of the surf with ! It was a buzz for me and my mate ( traveling from Perth) to see Mark in person up close !😎👍
This is super. Love hearing how the best shapers were all moving different directions to better designs. It's just lovely to hear the great ideas that were evolving in a short period, from many of the greats. Feels like there should be a compendium of these movies so the stories of all the great shapers are accessible somewhere. Nice one.
Are there any coastal towns or city in the USA comparable to Byron Bay?
Never been to America. Only Oahu and Kauai.
@@ezb963 isn't Byron Bay considered a high end place to live
Yes the real estate is expensive but we have a lot of homeless people as well.
Looks like a boat
Having too much Fun. Keep riding Potato chips. Suffer.
Awesome work Ian! See if you can persuade Geoff to let you document how he builds his Loaded Dome. I'm pretty sure there are only two people in the world that know how to shape one like Geoff does.
I'm so stoked to see you documenting this! Thank you!
Thank you for the videos Ian! I’ve learned so much about about surfing and understand it so much more after watching and listening to Geoff talk, he is a master of the industry and has an unmatched wealth of knowledge about surfing and boards 🤙🏽 Yours truely, Newcastle Grommet 🏄♂️
Ian, Mahalo for documenting Geoff's knowledge. How can one buy a set of the gullwing thruster fins in US (hawaii)?
Cheyne Horan sells Mc Coy style fins .
Hello Ian I would like to purchase one of these in the same dimensions . I’ve been ridding something similar in shape with the - modern double wide 8’4 , 89L - but the ones I’ve had are not strong enough for 5ft+ and I’ve snapped two of them . I’ve been searching for a more reliable replacement . I’m not looking to surf much above 6ft but would like to know my equipment will hold together incase it gets big out there . Will it be easy to get the same board shaped and what should I expect price wise ? Thanks Jason
+61448229336 Call Geoff
Good demonstration of the benefit of length and volume
Thanks Ian. Geoff great insight into design. Fella told me in the surf, I was cheating riding my nugget haha
How long has the 3 fin version of the gullwing been around for?
A few months now
Whoa! Nice!
Thanks a million for the video Ian!
Looks great for Florida surf.
like a lot of people never reeeaally does a proper, deep, speed-generating bottom turn, and never reeeally hits the top...flapping both arms up like those films from 60s, 70s...nice waves but...
ComboverSoul tig ok Slater
Yeah the waves are great but the surfing style is very sloppy with hardly any turns, mostly just going straight with his arms flapping like a chicken, lol. The waves had heaps of open face begging to be ripped but just chicken running along. This is a McCoy team rider BTW. Most of the boys at my local rip harder than this in everyday beach break waves. Does not say much for McCoy surfboards. Be a good ad for KFC though...
Danno yeah ok champ .. You and your mate above.. Hope u can surf as great as Ian at his age.... Ur probably always trying trying to pull off airs and falling off wearing your steamer in the middle of summer
Thanks Ian for sharing this video. I shape my own boards in Florida, and I learn a lot listening to Mr. McCoy talk about his designs.
Krui Sumatra
This is insane... Magical boards...
Its a shame he is not a believer in concaves, His Lazor Zap would have held in much better even with a wider tail but with either a double or single concave. His theory about foil back and rail theory is spot on. Bob Simmons was the first to propose the wide tail area which maximizes planing surface aft. I shaped a modern version of the Lazor Zap with wide point 2 inches back from center, double concaves, very low tail rocker, very wide tail 18in, and needle nose and it holds like crazy. no slipping at all. Its a quad with fins further back than normal.
