I have been painting in both watercolor and oil for more than 30 years, and I have specialized in teaching beginners to paint. Watercolor is such a challenging medium, but there is nothing more beautiful than the vibrant transparency of watercolor.
I want to use this channel to give useful, concise painting demonstrations for beginners and more experienced painters as well. Having taught for so many years, I am familiar with the most frequently asked questions, as well as the subjects that are most needed, especially for beginners.
Painting is very rewarding, even when it's done as just a hobby. Don't be afraid to give it a try!

How to Lose Edges in Watercolor
Learn how to lose edges in your watercolor paintings to get a looser look. The key is to control the water. Practice on a small piece of watercolor paper to improve your technique.

Using Gouache to Fix a Watercolor Painting
มุมมอง 118หลายเดือนก่อน
Gouache (opaque watercolor) is a great way to fix a watercolor painting when you have no other option. Watch as I demonstrate how to do this with two very different paintings. You don’t need an entire set of several colors of gouache. You can simply mix white gouache with your watercolor paints to get the color and shade you need.
SketchPhotos: Combine a photo with Watercolor Painting
มุมมอง 442 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video describes a process in which you can take a part of a photo and incorporate it into a watercolor painting. This was taken from a slide show I did for a local art league. One of the people at that meeting had captured a video of my presentation, but it was sped up and not easy to follow step-by-step. So I turned my slide show into this video. I hope this helps for anyone who may be in...

@@sharonkrochmal9474 Thank you so much!
Love this very nice technique ❤ 😊
Thank you! I hope you give it a try. Practice, practice. 🙂
Awesome ❤
Thank you, Krista.
Great lesson!❤
Thank you, Krista!
Just when I think I’ve seen every approach to watercolour , you have shown me something new - how exciting, thank you!
@@AdrienneBrown-t8h You are welcome! I don’t know why I took such a liking to it, but it was really fun to do.
You have the ability to simplify the principles of composition, variety of edges, watercolour techniques etc - nicely done! N
@@AdrienneBrown-t8h Thank you so much!
love the result! but whats the correlation between pen and you being left-handed?
@@amphibrach Thank you! For lefties, as soon as we put down a mark, we are dragging our left hand over it as we move from left to right. You may not notice it so much in this video because I’m working on a small piece of watercolor paper, but it’s a challenge on a larger surface. Some artists work from right to left in the sketch to avoid this.
@@SteviePaints oh i got it. you've sad that the pen doesnt smudge
Beautiful

Great painting. Even better narration. Thanks.
Thank you so much, Rajeev!
We should learn from them
Great advice!
Thank you, Barbara.
Yes! I figured this out a while ago, put it through some tests, it does work well, especially if you can’t see very good :-)
Love the videos, and so happy that you're sharing them with the world!
Brilliant. I use for sewing. Never thought to use on paper! So excited to try this out.
Thank you, Kat. Note my disclaimer on the video page that this ink can reappear at temps lower than 14 degrees. I live in Arizona, so that's not a problem for me! But I thought I should mention it.
Great lesson Stevie. I’ll recommend to my students.
Thank you, Barbara!
Brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
Not seen this idea before, thanks!
So does the ink reappear if the ink gets cold? Someone asked that question, I'd really like to know.
The Pilot Corp. website says this: "The ink will reappear at temperatures under -10°C (14 degrees Fahrenheit)." I live in Arizona, so I'll never be able to test that, but I did a test today by taking the same sketch in this video, and I put it in the freezer and covered it with a frozen gel pack for two hours. The ink did not reappear. Since I live in such a warm climate, I will continue to use it.
@@SteviePaints 😂 love this answer 💕🤣 thank you I may just buy one, I'm in Canada half the year is hot and half the year is cold, could be fun
@@nicoleperron3315 If the ink ever reappears in the cold weather, please let me know! Now I’m really curious.
@@SteviePaints I've used these for years - it does reappear if it gets cold. (I tested it a long time ago by putting it in the freezer. 😂) I used to love them for journaling or using in my planner, until I left my book in the car one day and it all disappeared! perfect for this use or on fabric, though!
If the ink gets cold it reappears. Nice for sending secret messages, I wouldn't be using them on my watercolors.
Thanks for your comment. See my response in the comment above. Happy painting!
Does the ink disappear even if it’s covered in paint?
Yes, I tested it that way, too.
I've been using this for months. It's great. You definitively can use it for tracing. You can add your own pen over it if you want or change things . I cover my area I've painted with cardstock and hit it with my drier in areas or wait until the end. I bought a pack of multi colors for the drawing that will remind me of certain colors in areas. No more pencil lines!!!
Great idea! I bought a red Frixion pen the other day, to help me with the layout of my line and wash paintings. I used to use pencil for the layout, but I’m left-handed, and the pencil becomes a mess! I’m a little worried about trying the red pen on a good piece of paper, but it sounds like you’ve used different colors with success.
Great tutorial!
Thank you, Cindy!
Wonderful!
Thank you, Karen.
Thanks Stevie! Great tip!
Thank you, Barbara!
wow 0 completely gone - amazing, isn't it? Does it ever re-appear, over a period of time? I had a fabric marking pen once that was perfect - disappeared - but over time rea-appeared again, making my lovely quilt not so lovely any more.
Hi Deanna, so far it hasn't re-appeared, but I have only been using it a couple weeks. However, I learned about it from Tracy Pounds (Miss Tracy Creates on Facebook), and she has been using them for much longer, and she has not had that problem. I will watch the work I used it on and report back. By the way, I just was at Walmart and bought a red Frixion pen, and that is going to be a good test to see if it re-appears.
@@SteviePaints Oh great - thank you so much for that info. Good to hear some positive stuff from another artist. I will definately check it out and try it for myself!!
@@deannamunro8148 Deanna, see my response above regarding the issue of the ink reappearing if it gets cold.
@@SteviePaints thanks stevie - I will need to keep that in mind. Wondering now.....does it disappear once warm again....hmmmmm....
A great tip. Blick carries these pens and I put one in my cart.
Thanks for the info! I didn't know that Blick carries them. I hadn't heard of them until someone mentioned it recently on Facebook.
