    Boadr 9. Partner has 5+ clubs. We know he has at most 1 spade and 4 hearts unless East bid 1S on KQTx, which is highly unlikely. So we know partner has 8+ minor suit cards. If he has 2-4-4-4 shape, he opens 1D, therefore he must have at least 5 clubs. With that in mind, 3C is probably best unless you want to try do double 2S. I don't like the double of 2S because the opponents could easily have a double fit and be cold Even so, I'd rather double 2S than pass. NOTE: I have not seen the actions taken by Eli yet.

      LOL. Partner ran. In this case, probably for the best. Again, I have not seen more thus far. Now I see the North hand and have no idea why he pulled the double. Maybe this si s stupid robot idea. Bidding NT and doubling here should be penalty even if your general style is for doubles in competition to be takeout.

    Counting losers only applies when declarer has trump control and is planning to eventually draw trumps. The loser count has to be kept in mind, but declarer's main count is winners. This is especially true when playing for a scramble.

    • @EliJolleyBridge
      @EliJolleyBridge 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The more I play..the more I agree with you. Counting winners and losers is probably the best approach if you can manage your energy well. For beginners, counting losers and planning how to get rid of them seems an easier approach at first imo.

    If the following is true, does it help to start by thinking this is probably the distribution & then adjusting as more information becomes available? When the opponents have an even number of cards in a suit (e.g. 6), a 4-2 split is more likely than 3-3 and much more likely than 5-1 or 6-0 When the opponents have an odd number of cards in a suit (e.g. 5), a 3-2 split is more likely than 4-1 or 5-0 Also, usually the first play is often fourth highest from longest suit, which presumably help to work out the complete distribution from the suit led?

    • @EliJolleyBridge
      @EliJolleyBridge ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. You are thinking the right way. If for instance we are in a 5-3 fit and need to draw trumps I am going to assume a 3-2 break unless I have enough information to think otherwise.

    What about a negative x? Pard and I use it like everyone else, but also for just this class of hand: forcing to 3 nt or 4 of a minor but no idea where it's going. If responder doesn't raise spades, he doesn't promise four. Opener's alternatives aren't great. Obviously he'd bid nt with a heart stop. Two spades would show a minimum with four, which isn't far from the truth. I think I'd rebid 3 clubs over x. Responder bids 3 hearts over whatever opener rebids, showing half a stop and more than a bare minimum because responder would have bid nt with a full stop and opener would bid nt with a full stop. The nebulous negative x with a strong hand is big enough to save us from any indiscretion opener may commit. The cuebid tells opener that responder has the big hand with no clear direction. If opener has a bigger hand with half a stop, then west bids 3 hearts, showing half a stop, for the same reasons above. The key is to avoid using up so much bidding space. The auction had already been obstructed once, with the 2 hearts preempt. You want to have a bias towards lower bids so as to recuperate some of the lost bidding space, in particular when your hand is hard to describe. X is the lowest bid possible, it tells your pard you have values to compete. Opener won't be going crazy in spades after neg x unless opps have a massive heart fit. And if that happens, you've got a really useful hand opposite 4=0=4=5. You might have a slam. This one's really hard, because opener doesn't have a great hand. Sometimes you have to pay off to the preempt.

    • @EliJolleyBridge
      @EliJolleyBridge ปีที่แล้ว

      awesome comment. thank you for your analysis! I will share this comment with my p. Without discussion I wouldn't use the neg x, but I see the benefits.

    FYI the sound on all of these hand of the day videos is extremely quiet - have to turn volume to 100% on my laptop to be able to listen. (Compare with an older video th-cam.com/video/udvY4A8xTRw/w-d-xo.html where it's comfortable at ~40% like other TH-cam videos). Nice hands though :) Definitely a tough hand at MP. I don't think an initial 3N seems right - after all, if the clubs aren't running, we could easily lose 4 spade tricks on top, and if they are, we're making 6N.. I probably would have started with 3H too, though that tends to give up on slam entirely since if partner raises them we're never going to find out if the clubs run.. not sure if there is any good answer!

    • @EliJolleyBridge
      @EliJolleyBridge 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi michelle, There is an agreement you can have with your partner while defending to give partner "Count". This means telling your partner if you started with an odd number of cards in the suit or an even number. Hopefully partner can deduce how many based on other factors in the hand. If we play high-low we can show an even number, low-high and odd number. There is more to this, but most of all what is required is partnership agreement if you employ this!
