My head canon for this timeline is that they die in android saga. In this case Dr. Gero would've observed the super saiyan transformation and would've adjust 17 and 18 accordingly

I wonder if they should have allowed you to fight ape vegeta before destroying the moon, this how it could have shown how easy the fight is now with goku being a super saiyan, being now overwhelmingly more powerful then great ape vegeta. cause fighting him before the transformation you would get wrecked from getting hit by him, but with the form, could just slap him around much easier.
