I love living in the Pacific Northwest and doing (mostly) outdoor things such as catching crayfish, clamming, crabbing, mushroom hunting, and metal detecting. At first I kept quiet about these activities since I didn't want other people to find out and get out there as competition. Over the years, however, I've learned a lot and now I feel it's better to help educate those interested in these activities so they'll know how to do things the right way and help to preserve and advocate for these resources. I'm also a big proponent of having the right gear (I do everything I can to buy US-made equipment) and I'm happy to share that information too. (Please note that I don't receive any kind of commissions from any company; I'll just tell you what works for me.) This is my first foray into TH-cam and I hope you find it informative. Remember, patience and persistence will pay off! Enjoy!
Catching Crayfish: 10 Tips to Get Started!
Let's catch some crayfish! These are native (to Oregon, anyway) signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus). I ended up with 52 today. The traps shown in this video may be ordered from the following site (please note that I have no financial interest in this supplier; I am just listing them here for your convenience):
Trapper Arne traps (I use are the "Trappy" style); made in Sweden:

Making Things Shiny: Cleaning Coins and Other Metal Detecting Finds

Here I'll show you what works (and what doesn't) when it comes to cleaning metal detecting finds. I hope you enjoy the video! If you're not sure about the difference between copper and zinc pennies (the latter are made of zinc with just a thin copper coating and were made starting in 1982), please check out this video: th-cam.com/video/KyCkxkRWs3c/w-d-xo.html My gear in this video: Lortone Mode...
Blacktail Deer Bringing the Fight to Me

It was really neat to see these blacktail deer fighting for dominance, until they came tumbling towards me (even then it was still cool I suppose). Just a short video, but I thought it would be fun to share it. Cheers!
Finding and Preparing Delicious Shaggy Mane Mushrooms
มุมมอง 2.2Kปีที่แล้ว
Join me as I go on a quick mushroom hunt and find some shaggy manes (Coprinus comatus). These mushrooms are fairly common here in the Pacific Northwest, relatively easy to identify, and delicious. Thanks for watching, and if you have any questions or comments (or you'd just like to say hi), please feel free to leave a comment. Cheers!
Stream Monsters: Saluting The Great Jeremy Wade

I have really been enjoying watching @rivermonsters clips featuring fishing icon Jeremy Wade. It inspired me to put together this video. For more serious information on how to catch crayfish, please check out my other videos. Thanks for watching! Special thanks to @noahmatsukihalbur for videography assistance. Using Quality Traps to Catch Big Invasive Crayfish

Let's trap some crayfish! Join me as I use my regular traps and try a new one to catch red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), which are invasive in my area. The traps shown in this video may be ordered from the following sites (note that I have no financial interest in either of these suppliers; I am just listing them here for your convenience): Trapper Arne traps (I use are the "Trappy" sty...
Vegetarian Pig's Ears? Finding and Cooking a Lesser-Known Mushroom
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Join my family as we go on a quick mushroom hunt and manage to bring home some pig's ears (Gomphus clavatus). Although not terribly well known, pig's ears are great tasting mushrooms, as long as you can get them before the bugs do. We were hunting in mainly Douglas fir at an elevation of about 1500'. Some mushroom safety items: 1. Never eat a mushroom unless you are absolutely certain of its id...
Trapping Crayfish with Kids: A Great Outdoor Family Activity
มุมมอง 1.6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I head out to trap some invasive (here in Oregon, at least) red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) with my children. Crayfish trapping is a particularly kid-friendly activity since it is easy, interesting for kids, and doesn't take a big commitment of time or money. In addition, crayfish are great eating! I don't discuss any details about traps, bait, techniques, etc. since I've already cover...
A Simple $0.02 Solution for Sorting Copper and Zinc Pennies Found Metal Detecting
มุมมอง 28K2 ปีที่แล้ว
When sorting the coins you've found metal detecting, it can be difficult to tell the difference between a US copper penny and a US copper-clad zinc penny. Oftentimes the date can't be read easily (or at all!) due to the condition of the coin, and if the penny was minted in 1982 it's hard to tell since both types were made during that year. Here I show you my solution to this problem, which only...
Lock Picking: Opening Good Locks with Bad Homemade Tools

Back to locksport! Although I would always recommend using quality tools, I attempt to open an Abus 81TI/50 lock with security pins using a windshield wiper blade insert. It took an embarrassingly long time to open, but it worked! Two TH-cam creators who were very influential in my learning about locks. You can check them out if you're interested in learning from the masters: @bosnianbill @lock...
Hunting the Queen of Mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Join me as I go on a quick hunt for one my favorite mushrooms, the queen bolete (Boletus regineus, formerly Boletus aereus?). Queen boletes are excellent eating, and in my opinion they are every bit as good as king boletes (Boletus edulis). I was hunting in mainly Douglas fir at an elevation of about 1500'. Some mushroom safety items: 1. Never eat a mushroom unless you are absolutely certain of...

Filling the Trap: Tips for Catching Crayfish
มุมมอง 3.8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
After a failed attempt earlier this season, I head back to a local warm-water pond to try trapping red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), which are invasive here in Oregon. What a difference two months can make! It was much better this time around, and in less than two hours I was able to catch about 100 crayfish. I hope you enjoy the video! If you have any questions or suggestions about tra...
