OLD RUSTY KNIFE RESTORATION | Original Handle Restored with Epoxy and Vinegar Soak
Check out our new video of this awesome, old, rusty knife!
We restored and repaired this vintage looking knife using all of its original parts, including the handle which was pinned with nails, to give it the most authentic look. We soaked the knife in vinegar to get rid of all of the additional rust that was left behind after sanding. Then, we used epoxy to secure the handle in place. At the end, we sharpened it up and tested it out! This was a fun restoration and it turned out awesome! Give us a review of what you think!

    Just needs a sharpening and good to go. How did the epoxy hold up? Doubt it would hold for long. The key wedge from the original would be ideal, as it still held from the original handle 💪

    If you belive epoxy can hold an axe head to the handle you are massively wrong.

    Should have taken the old broken handle parts out before the soak, should have put blo in your handle not polyurethane,and 2 part epoxy for the head? What the actual fuck made you think that was a good idea?

    Boo, that pitting looked so even and amazing...a mirror polished cutting edge with the years of pitting would have looked so great. Maybe next time. It still came out nice, and bravo on making your own haft.

    Looks exactly like the one I found in the backyard of a 100+ yearold house. Can't wait to start this project. I fear the rust is to pitted and deep in some spots.

    Good work. Next one keep clear in keeping with the original. Funny though the new ones are powder coated to look like an old oxidized one. They probably don't want the liability of a hot tin line. I did three of these classics and vinegar and wire brushes works quite fast.

    Basically ruined a good grinder. Coffee grinders are red, meat grinders are tin plated. Tin plating would've been the most durable finish that wouldn't have caused paint chips to get into your ground meat. Probably rounded the ridges inside the housing that the auger grinds meat against by using 80 grit paper. But hey you got a fine looking paper weight now..

    • @RRaucina
      @RRaucina 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. Should have just polished the remaining tin plate and lacquered it clear.

    Gorgeous restoration! I just got one that's very close to this one. It's a General food slicer model 300. The platform doesn't glide easily along the platform rods. There isn't any rust, just feels like it needs a little grease. Is there one you would recommend? Or what is the best option if grease isn't the answer? Again amazing restoration.

    Was just given an axe head in similar condition but with a bit more damage to the cutting edges. It's encouraging to see that it's not beyond salvage! I will probably have to grind in new cutting edges, but I'd like to save the axe even if it ends up being a bit shorter and lighter. Thanks!

    I found one on the dirt basement floor of the building I live in that was built in 1891 "the building" that is. Mine is in worse shape than yours the wood has rotted off. I cleaned in vinegar have got it to turn but have not ring to turn yet. Awesome restore job.

    Polyurethane is not really a good finish to put on a working axe. Boiled linseed oil, Tung Oil, or Danish oil are much better for the wood.

    The plate and the knife must be sharp on a flat surface. On abrasive paper or sharpening stone. All the blades of the knife must tread evenly on the plate! When mounting, you put the knife upside down. It was funny!

      I've got a similar project in the works. I soaked it in vinegar, kept the bluish patina and pitting. The only grinding I did was to put a rough edge on it. Filed it down, took it took a whet stone and am now in the process of sanding the edge with high grit sandpaper. Already have a few cuts from the edge this bad boy is putting on. Its gonna chop a few trees down, guaranteed.
