In 1974, 5hey were still utilizing the Genji era practice of issuing personal challenges to single combat after declaring one's lineage. The Mongols unleased a volley of arrows that cut down the foolish bushi (Japanese warrior). The strategy described herein are mostly from the 1281 invasion that resulted from the harsh lessons learned as the result of the 1274 invasion that was also defeated by the weather (kamikaze, hurricane). The Japanese lost at Tsushima and were saved by hurricane at Hakata Bay. On both occasions, Japan was saved by hurricanes, not by martial prowess. BTW, Sō Sukekuni was killed in action and did not survive. (I am ethnic Japanese who trained in traditional sword and received certification in Japan so I am not anti-bushi.)
