I see why people wouldn't want to have firearms in D&D, though I'm generally okay with it. As long as everyone is fine with it of course. I don't think its a big deal, but I get why some people would. For me, it depends on the setting. I have a homebrew setting that I've been working on and will be running a campaign in starting next Thursday. We had a player that had been part of the session 0 and was going to be part of the minicampaign that was leading up to the full campaign (they've been removed for... reasons that are not relevant to this discussion). They wanted to play a Gunslinger, at which point I informed her that guns weren't a thing yet in this setting. We reached a compromise where she could use the subclass but not actual firearms (until later because she wanted to play the same character in the full campaign which I reluctantly agreed to because I had specifically said that everyone would play different characters). So yeah, you can make a compromise on things, if both parties are willing. I can tell you more about what happened with the player if you want.

One of my kids absolutely loves the living locomotives of the Island of Sodor, and absolutely HATES the fan theory that the engines are transformed dragons. I happen to think that's a swell idea, but maybe I'll try it in my own universe....

Wow, that person in the first story knows NOTHING about how Half-Elves work apparently. Half-Elves are considered adults at 20 years old, its full Elves that aren't considered adults until 100. Theoretically, this actually could make for an interesting character quirk if you wanted to play an Elf who has had no contact or knowledge of non-Elves or Half-Elves, so they are confused by the age difference and consider them all children, but you gotta run that past the group first.
