Paper Mario 64 + TTYD > All of the other Mario and Luigi games. The combat mechanics involving badges and the leveling system are much more complex and customizable, whereas Mario and Luigi doesn't have nearly as much strategic depth. The world feels so well thought out and cohesive. TTYD references so much from 64 and really makes both games feel so connected and create a sense of continuity between the worlds. When I play Partners in Time after Superstar Saga, besides the gameplay, the story feels so secluded. Not that it's a problem, Mario and Luigi is doing its own thing and I respect that, but the world building in Paper Mario is so special. The characters are all given so much life, from even the most minor optional characters, you can tell that this was a world that was made with a lot of love. Furthermore, species from obscure instances in Mario games getting heavy representation connect the overall Mario universe. With Lil' Sparkies from Super Mario World as Watt or Little Mousers from Yoshi's Island as Ms. Mowz. Heck, there are even references to the Beanish people with characters like Podely in TTYD! Mario and Luigi adds to the Mario universe, but it doesn't prioritize connecting it all together in a way that makes a lot of sense. The partners you meet on your journey adding to the combat and story. Of course, there are reasons why Mario and Luigi are superior, but these reasons for Paper Mario standout in my mind.

M&L is the only actual Mario RPG series. Mario RPG doesn’t count as a series and 2/3 of the Paper Mario games aren’t even RPGs (and the ones that are RPGs are pretty mid). M&L have way better gameplay than the classic PM games because they actually feel like you’re playing as Mario and Luigi in an RPG setting with how you avoid attacks and use attacks. Enemy attacks in PM are always like “oh no the final boss hits you with evil hands and you take seven damage” whereas M&L enemy attacks are like “Luigi avoids canon fire while Mario hammers away at the airship to save Luigi” I also personally feel that the classic PM games are a bit too simplistic. I feel like we only need one Mario RPG series, and PM doesn’t need to become one. I also like the weird experimental stuff the modern PM games try and TOK is my personal favorite in that series.

"The stellar orb barely makes an effect." I disagree strongly, without it, it can be difficult to see enemies from a distance. It's one of the better items in the game for me.

I really hope paper mario goes back to its routes hell they could still do the paper stuff but have the original battle system and unique characters and i would still like it

This was such a great video! I basically agree with everything you said. I became more of a Mario and Luigi fan after Paper Mario started to disappoint me more (though I still enjoyed Color Splash). It's awesome to see a new game in the series after 9 years...AND it's the first HD and home console game in the series too! I'm super hyped for Brothership.

Honestly hey pikmin isn’t even a bad game. At worst it’s mediocre

Honestly I don’t think I like pikmin 4. Which is crazy to say since I love the series. I am a very new pikmin fan. I played all the games for the first time in preparation for 4. I think pikmin 1 and 3 are absolute masterpieces. Pikmin 2 I’m not nearly as big of a fan of and it’s definitely my least favorite in the series. I think hey pikmin is better than it but even so 2 is nowhere near a bad game. When I played pikmin 4 for the first time it was fun and it’s definitely a good game but something about it never felt right to me and over time I’ve come to realize that I don’t really like it. It retcons the entire series for absolutely no reason, the gameplay is more focused on a dog then the actual pikmin, instead of an actual night mode like everybody wanted we got a protect the tower mini game, caves are back and they’re still not very good and they don’t even have unique bosses at the end of all of them anymore, the game is painfully easy, the characters never shut the fuck up even during gameplay, instead of feeling like you’re exploring a postapocalypse earth it feels like you’re exploring somebody’s house while they’re on vacation, it shoves dandori battles into the main game when it should’ve just been a side mode like in the previous games, many of the pikmin types are barely even used throughout the game which makes me question why they’re even there, none of the enemies in the overworld respond after you kill them so the world feels Barren and dull and there is no day limit so the day night system is completely pointless and all it does is force you to stop playing for a few minutes for no reason. That’s not even all of my complaints though. I still have more but I think you get the point. I keep hearing people say that pikmin 4 is the perfect pikmin game and the best in the entire series, but I don’t understand that at all and I know it’s not nostalgia making me feel this way because I played all of the games for the first time back to back. Pikmin 4 is not a bad game. I definitely had fun playing it, but I feel like it’s missing so much of that pikmin charm and magic is in every other game in the series. I’m sure that makes me sound like a Satanist to some pikmin fans but that’s just how I feel

Personally I love paper Mario color splash. I think it’s easily the best out of the modern paper Mario games and just a great game in general. It has problems but overall I think it’s really good. I honestly like it better than super paper Mario. Super has a great story but its gameplay sucks ass. Color splash also has charm in truckloads. It also came out at a time where the Mario series was pretty generic but color splash is anything but generic. Yes the toads don’t have unique designs and that is annoying, but all of the locations are super unique and interesting. Even the more standard Mario locations at least have something memorable about them. Like indigo underground is one of the most generic levels in the game but even then it has that serial killer shy guy with the horror movie music that probably traumatized a bunch of children. The world is just so vibrant and fun to explore. Despite not being open world, everything in color splash still feels connected. Color splash probably has the best world map in any video game I’ve seen. A lot of people dislike the fact that color splash even has a world map, but open world isn’t inherently better than a level based structure. It’s all how it’s handled. Color splash is also easily the funniest Mario game ever made. It’s not even a competition

I’m just now thinking about how cool Fawful is. I’m not even talking about his character. I just mean on a conceptual level. He was first in superstar saga as the main antagonists henchman and then he showed up again as a cameo in partners in time talking about wanting revenge and then he made his final appearance in Bowser inside story where he was actually the main villain and was killed for good. It’s not even that amazing in the grand scheme of things but for some Mario games to actually have continuity and have a villain that was set up for 2 games and then paid off in the 3rd one is just crazy and I can’t even believe it happened and it’ll probably never happen again. At first I didn’t really think about it too much because in most series it’s really not a big deal but Mario doing that is just unheard of💀

As much as I love Paper Mario, Mario and Luigi is far better due to the quality between gameplay and story even if the first two Paper Mario games can go tied to tied with the best of M&L Also, Mario and Luigi is just more funnier than Paper Mario and I’ll stand by it

Honestly Mario and Luigi bowsers inside story is a top 10 all time game for me and is easily my second favorite Mario game only behind galaxy!

yea i agree with your exact reason, mario and luigi is just more consistent even tho paper jam is the worst mario and luigi game it's still really fun with it's battle and it's charm, while paper mario kinda falls when it comes to that, i do like that they did try to do something different but i don't think it really worked, super and sticker star bring paper mario down for me because i thought the overworld gameplay in color splash was super good and origami king was pretty good too but sticker star is mainly the reason (great video👍)

Im person like old paper mario games more than M&L games, I totally fine you like M&L more, I never really any of the modern paper mario games (Yes I don’t think Origami king is that great but not terrible game). I’m glad TTYD got switch version (my most fave Mario rpg) & hope paper mario old battling gameplay come back in new game

To me they feel so different that they can't be compared. I have way more nostalgia with Paper Mario, but I also loved the mechanics of Superstar Saga (and only Superstar Saga, since I didn't quite like Partners in time and I loathe Starlow), so all I can say is that these are 2 amazing RPG franchises, and the 2 best Mario sub-series

i agree, both of the series have their own charm and feel to them, but Mario & Luigi adds more depht especially with the battle system and characters in my opinion, i just love the series too much lol

I agree with everything you said, except that Bowser's Inside Story and Superstar Saga are the best Mario RPGs, and that Mario and Luigi will always be the best Mario RPG series, even if Paper Mario goes back to its routes for the rest of its lifetime. I just enjoy the Mario and Luigi battle system better.

I can agree, Mario and Luigi is more consistent then Paper Mario Mario Rabbids is only two games and RPG is just one game so they are slightly weaker Paper Mario's newer games are definitely a bit weaker then TTYD or Super Mario and Luigi games usually stayed more consistent without removing exp and still being the best in something

I feel like mario and luigi is a lot more challenging than paper mario, because if you know how to effectively attack bosses with op badges you can just win and battles become chores not challenging tests of skill
