Just two days ago I went on a charity motorcycle ride. At one of the stops, we happened to be at a hotel and the AFL grand final came on the TV. I made a comment about the recent "250,000 years BC" statement at a recent sporting fixture. A white bloke I had just met, who had blue eyes, rode a German bike, and in no way shape or form indicated to me any aboriginality, pulled me up saying "be careful I'm aboriginal mate". "Really?" I replied. "So does that mean that I have to treat you 'special' now?" He quickly backed down, realising he thought that the "welcome to country" issue was offensive even to him. I said that he was free to identify as aboriginal if he wanted, but don't walk talk and live as totally white, and then demand I respect you for being aboriginal. You have to earn respect, not expect it in my opinion. Just my two cents. Pauline for PM.
