ben, i am a composer and a huge fan of your multiphonic videos and i was browsing through your channel when i saw this- i was so so surprised because Tim is one of my composition professors at Boston Conservatory. so cool to see you collaborating!!!
Cool! How many layers are there?
This piece is so beautiful, I can’t find the sheet music anywhere. Where did you get it?
There is a website for the complete works of CPE Bach. You'll want to look for Wq. 132, usually as unaccompanied flute rather than bassoon.
masterpiece!
Amazing work
Hi Ben, how would you notate the timbre change in 7:18? amazing videos!!
Thanks, Nicolás! The simplest way to do this would be to notate something like "timbre changes using low D, C, B, and Bb keys." If you'd like to notate the changes precisely, you can add and subtract each of those keys individually (with the caveat that the C key will automatically press down the D key, and the B key will automatically press down the C and D keys. So a logical way to do it would be to add them one by one [D-C-B-Bb] and then subtract one by one [Bb-B-C-D]).
I just found this series! this is amazing, thanks for posting!
This is very instructive for composing in one way, but begs many questions. How do you even go about composing for multiphonics...you'd have to know what was possible....are they really flexible or do the multiphonic intervals happen organically. In other words, how much control does the oboe player have? In the example, more partials, what are they? Are they distinct enough to notate precisely or is it just notated generally as a chord without distinct pitches? It sounds like the result is rather variable.
Very nice! Thank you!
Oh! I love the colors it produces! It sounds incredible! Could you share some works in which this technique is used?
uh this is awkward, i have a piece called “for ben roild-ward” too. do we have to like fight to the death now or something?
I'm ready!!
Superb, all around. Great work, stellar performance.
I have a question, can this multiphonic be played pp easily? Thanks
Hi Leonardo, sorry for the delayed reply! The higher version of this multiphonic responds very beautiful in soft dynamics (I sometimes slightly depress the second highest flick key to help with this). It can come from niente. The lower setting is a bit more challenging--it tends to respond clearly only at p/mp and above.
@@benroidl-ward897 Hey thanks man, no worries! Im writing a bassoon trio with a couple multiphonics (including this one). Thanks for the reply!
@ Fantastic! I'd love to see/hear it when it's finished!
what is that
What a great project! Thank you for sharing it!!!
One of the nicecest, most subtle mtph. I have heard. Just like Luis' piece (:
This is freaking awesome!
what's the fingering diagram like for this one? would love to use it in one of my pieces!
never mind, i see it's there later in the video! oops! this is a great resource for composers, you deserve way more views!
@@georgeioan9223 Thanks, George! Would love to see any pieces where you end up using these!
very useful, thank you!
This series is an absolute treasure!!! <3 Thank you so much for doing this man
Wonderful. Quite mesmerizing.
I got lessons from her when I was a kid
masterful!
GREAT
My friend, you have some incredible lungs. Those long notes, wow.
Wow, cool piece, is the score available?
Sorry for the delayed reply! The best way is to contact Jalalu directly: www.jalalukalvertnelson.com/contact.html
@@benroidl-ward897 Thanks! Wonderful performance! So glad you shared this!
@@thewhisperkey6956 Thanks!
on 6:33 there is this beautifull multiphonic... there is a pitch that knda trills... is this done with a change of fingering? u can control it? thanks
Beast!!! Love your response and ghostly phrasing at the 6 minute mark, Ben!
Just saw this! Thanks, Eric!
This is great - the movie it made me think of is ‘Arrival’
that's the one!!
beautiful work Ben - there's a whole world in that multiphonic!
TWENTY SEVEN. Nice man. And, yes, Weston's album is 🔥
That's what I'm talking about baby
beautiful sounds
That low A is my tuning note...
Nice hat!
Gotta represent!
Anything else with a prominent tritone sound? Possibly something you can really wail on?... Also the second to last one you show is currently my pick for MVP.
Comin atcha any minute now
It's a yes from me!!
Hey, Ben! Great presentation. I’ve been meaning to watch your series since it began, and I finally got started with it. Fascinating stuff. Hope you’re doing well in your isolation! Looking forward to continuing with your series and learning more about multiphonics on the bassoon.
Thanks for watching, Andy! Isolation is ok up here... I hope that you're all doing as well as possible out on the island! I think about the amazing tour you gave me often, and hope to see you again soon.
I think this was the very first multiphonic I discovered when experimenting, myself!! Oh the memories...
Thanks for watching, Varun! Let me know if there are any you'd like me to delve into... And I owe you an email...
amazing!
Saxophonists use the term threshold tone for the pitches that seamlessly slur into a multiphonic where that pitch is also present. I would love to add this to the research someday!
🤘
Nice!
Yes Ben!! Keep 'em coming :)
Excellent!
Bravo!
