Backcountry with Shaughn is a simple quiet channel for folks who love the outdoors and enjoy sharing the wonders nature has to offer. Hiking, backpacking, climbing, alpine climbing, camping, kayaking, rafting, fishing, rock-hunting, bushcrafting, survival, rock tumbling, cabbing, polishing and every once in awhile some philosophic ramblings~
Egg in a hole!
A continuation from a previous post. Digging some thundereggs then cutting them and sharing the results. These were dug in the Ochoco mountains. #thefinders #rockhounding #lapidary #thundereggs #rocks I cut the thundereggs on a Lortone LS12 slab saw with continuous rim blade using a clamp I bought on Ebay. I drilled some extra holes in the clamp to allow the use of threaded stock that allows me to "lock" the stone into place in the clamp.

Thunderegg Magic from the Ochoco mountains~

Out in the Ochoco forest down in a hole digging for thunderegg magic! Using my Estwing 22oz rock hammer and my favorite tool the gad prybar to chisel these really beautiful thundereggs that formed from 50-37 million years ago out of a very sticky layer of clay where the rhyolite layer has settled. Took moving a bunch of dirt to get to the few I collected but boy am I thankful for the ones I did...

Apologize to everyone for the huge delay in posting some fresh content. Am not super good/quick at editing raw video into something palatable for my discerning rockhounding friends but trying to get better. Anyway, finally put together some clips from working around my workshop. The video's were taken over the last 8 months at different times and the material I worked with is a mix of different...

Hope you come along with my friend Christian and I as we set out on a typical rainy winter day out in the Tillamook forest up at Jones Creek looking for jasper, petrified wood and agate if its any good. #TheFinders My friend Christian and I headed out for some morning hunting up in Washington on a beautiful day. Good carnelian finds and better friends made for a really great trip! #TheFinders Threw this video together so hope it isn't too annoying with camera focus and such. Decided to cut the small thundereggs by hand on the trim saw then use the cabbing wheels instead of the high speed sander, it is a little too aggressive for the smaller pieces. What bed is that???
Hi Darrell, hope you n Lori are doing well. That's at the Ochoco agate beds. Went there during the Prineville PowWow.
5:55 nice chunk there, looks like you scored alot of good material
That river produces some really interesting and varied material IMO and is my favorite river to rock-hound in the state followed closely by the John Day river. A lot of orange carnelian, some chalcedony and some agates, a lot of chert, quartz crystals, jaspers, some petrified wood and fossil concretions can all be found at spots along that river.
@@BackcountrywithShaughnsounds awesome
Interesting clamp setup, superb egg 👌
The clamp is sold on Ebay and I drilled some extra holes in it to run the threaded stock and wing nuts. I had found that really hard material would cause the spring loaded hinge to lift and the stone would ride up on the blade. The holes and threaded stock allows me to "lock" the spring loaded hinge in place providing a really stable cutting platform for round and misshaped objects. Anyway I have been really happy with the thundereggs outta those beds. Thx for the watch and comment. Have a great week!
@@BackcountrywithShaughn you too,
Great colours, love the water-line in the first one. Now if we could just find the dang thunder bacon, we'd have a delicious thunder breakfast....
I have some steak, does that count? Was walking down a river when I spotted what looked like a 2-3 inch thick slab of nicely fat marbled steak just sitting on top of another rock in the middle of the river. Called over a buddy and we were both flabbergasted trying to figure out what was going on where someone would dump a big hunk of steak on a rock...maybe it was bear bait? So we looked around and called out but no one answered so I picked it up and realized it was stone that perfectly mimicked a marbled slab of steak. Someone at the club has slabs that look like bacon they used in a display case at one of the club shows using a breakfast theme. Hope you are doing well!
@@BackcountrywithShaughn Oh man that's perfect! LOL! ⚡🥚🥓 I'm doing all right. Hurt my back, so been pretty slow this summer. Hope you're all good! Cheers!
@@thirstfast1025 So very sorry to hear about your back issue sir, that is definitely a challenge. Hope you are on the mend or working towards it so you can get back out into the world on adventures! Am still upright and breathing over here so that's super good! Thx for asking.
I love the window in the Lortone saws, if and went I make a saw upgrade, I really want to add a window to a saw. Those thundereggs came out looking fantastic.
I do like the window and it usually stays clean for around 20-25 cuts but doing a bunch of thundereggs sure dirty's up everything really fast. Yeah, am happy with those more than the big ones I got but will post video of them all polished up once I get em done. Hope you and family are doing well in your new digs sir.
We do we get to see it cut? :)
I'll cut it and friends today (work permitting) but won't be able to polish them for another couple days. (just cleaned the 12" LS slab saw) Hoping to get it and a couple of its closest mates done over the weekend!
Nice!! Hopefully, the inside is great!
Yeah I'm forever hopeful that the inside of the next one is gonna be something so profound...like the holy grail or the cure for cancer~🤔😂 I'll cut it today and post the clip after it and friends get polished over the weekend.
@@BackcountrywithShaughn 🤣 I hope it turns out like that as well!!!
Looks like you will be able to get into places others can't! Not Aaron's breastplate, but it'll do!
Hahaha Yeah, the idea is to be able to get there and back with pretty rocks n minerals. Hoping the extra armor continues making that possible.
Oh man, that's some low clearance 😮 I'm going to go with the tundra
Yeah...The armor plates added a bunch of weight down low dropping it over an inch from stock. When I swap out the suspension will add 3-4" lift with 33" tires. The older model Tundra I'd agree but I'd only saved enough to buy the Tacoma without payments. Still am getting 24-25mpg on the highway fully loaded so I don't mind that and the armor keeps me from worrying...also added catalytic converter guard. It's been to some extreme locations in it's short life~😉
:) Glad to see ya out there gettin some! Cheers!
Thank you sir, was a fun summer of hunting. Hope all is well up in your neck of the woods across the boarder!
There’s a daily limit on what you can collect unless you’re a claim owner there’s also a yearly limit on petrified wood the BLM allows you to buy all materials that are over the limit so collect responsibly
Yup exactly, 25lbs a day plus 1 piece and up to 250lbs a year from blm land. I tell folks to focus on what they're gonna do with it and be choosy. Thx for the comment!
What state are you in?
OR....This video is in Oregon, north part of the state between Portland and Tillamook on a river that feeds into the Wilson river. (up beyond the jones creek campgrounds)The water is cold and super clear. Up there I tend to find low quality chalcedony with a few agates sometimes with quarts pockets. Mostly I go there looking for really bright colored jaspers. Sometimes up there the colors of the jaspers just don't appear natural but they are unique IMO so I go back every few years for a look.
what are the gloves for nerd?
Thx for the comment. I'm like JB Pruitt and work as the worlds greatest hand model so I gotta protect these beauties.....actually, the gloves help protect my hands from the sharp edges of agates and jaspers, scorpion stings, cactus thorns and fire ants among other things. Getting cuts while out camping for days or weeks on end can lead to infection so I try to avoid that situation if at all possible, hence the gloves.
I found a nice yellow Jaspagate on the Wilson River while Steelhead fishing one year. It was big enough to get a nice 30X40 cab out of it.
That's a good-sized cab for sure. I really like the agate included jaspers myself. Have found some vibrant jasper colors around the Diamond Mill OHV area that feeds into the Wilson river. Above the Jones Creek campground areas before you get to Tillamook.
Wow! Those were some amazing finds!! I would love to get my hands on some of those specimens!!! And now I'm subscribed!
Thanks for the view and comment sir. Much appreciated! Maybe one day i'll edit some more content to post. (just not good at the editing part) The hunt for pretty stuff is truly my favorite part of the hobby...just wandering around remote locations and stumbling upon something really beautiful is very exhilarating IMO. And we get some really interesting and unique silica and feldspar based semi-precious stones out here to choose from and after the years I've been hunting have learned to become quite selective. I've got my trips planned and will be back out in the deserts and forests of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and possibly northern California this summer to meander the land in hopes of finding something really unique and beautiful, maybe will run into you. (and if you live far away well, there's always the us postal service! 🙂)
@BackcountrywithShaughn That's so cool, Shaughn! I'm looking forward to checking out more of your videos! And yea, Canada is a little ways away. 🍻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Shaughn, now THAT was fun! What a beautiful day! Looks like you hit a few spots that day. I believe we may have met at the Lilly pad thunder egg site in Washington a couple years back. I rockhound the streams of S.W. Wash but have yet to check out Oregon’s Nehalem. Looked like you were upstream a ways. May I be so bold as to ask what bridge you started at?
That bridge is where Timber Road crosses the river near Clear Creek. Upstream from the bridge where the river zig zags is an old flood area where the material was pushed into piles and now the river meanders through those piles. Lotsa interesting material that comes outta that river IMO. And definitely the best ORANGE carnelians in my collecton~ Hope that helps!
That's a very pretty truck. I don't think I would ever own something that pretty and then take it out get it messed up. By the way everyday is a good day for a taco!❤❤
Schauhn, your music is too loud you can't hear anything you're saying
Thanks for the view and comment Tom. I've heard that many times and have purchased new video editing software that allows controlling the audio gain better than what I previously used. Since TH-cam does not allow creators to repost the video with edited audio track am looking at ways to change out the audio without having to take down and re-post. TBH I never thought anyone would want to even hear the inane comments I make while picking up rocks in the desert. Who knew? 🤣🤣
Nobody can buy smaller entry level homes. I am very fortunate that I bought my home in 2014 before the prices really skyrocketed. But now the town has been built up around me and my street is a lot busier than it used to be and I can’t afford to move because even with my equity double what I paid, another place is way out of reach and interest is high. It sucks. My kids are never going to be able to afford their own place. Even manufactured homes are over $100k plus space rent.
Did Graveyard Point Road say private on it when you went through? We were there this weekend, and the road said private, so we didn’t go down it and then we tried to go in the back entrance, and there was a river crossing that was too deep for my Tacoma.
Sorry to hear of the issues you faced. What I can tell you from the times I've been out there. You have to drive past the gun club and turn right at the rubber tires around the mailbox. When you turn across there, you'll see two homes on either side that put up signs that say private property...in between them is the public access road that transits out to GYP. It is just a tiny dirt road between the two homes fences then around and once you've passed under the power lines you are back in Oregon and at the BLM area. Google maps and such will will take you to a hill on the other side of the irrigation ditch that is the landmark for GYP but not the actual hunting grounds. I can understand the confusion though~ Hopefully you have another opportunity.
Dude been camping at Stubb Stewart's and walked Clear Creek to the Nehalem. Been picked over pretty hard but found a few keepers. Below Elsie is really good for arrow heads. Never been to the John Day area but will try this Summer. Thanks for your videos!
Thanks for watching and the nice comment. Yeah, love the Nehalem river for the variety and the hobby sure has picked up since 2020 IMO. I highly recommend the areas on the John Day from Fossil down through Clarno for agate and jaspers. Plus it's a really nice area during the summer to just float on the river~ Have a great summer!
I like the music you put on your videos. Reminds me of old school cartoons or adventure movies. One recommendation I would add though is to use a microphone because it’s really hard to hear your voice over the music and background noise. Outdoor acoustics are difficult. Great to see fellow club members on TH-cam. You collect great stuff!
That area is just so massive. We went in November and were on the Idaho side right next to the Oregon border. Fairly close by the main “entrance” we found a hill just covered in jasper, agate, and seam agate pieces. It’s was horribly cold when we were there and the ground was frozen so digging was out. I’d like to go back and explore the area more.
Nice day for a taco indeed sir
😎👍 Pass the sour cream and salsa! 🙌😜
🌮🌮 LOL! I just got back home from Mexican lunch with my mom! The Taco jokes are going down well!
Dang, nice ride! Cool seeing a video from you! Cheers!
Thanks sir, much appreciated! Getting it ready for this years excursions, added armor plates underside front to back including gas tank and now steel bumper and winch. Finally beat the jeep into submission last summer so decided to get a truck this time for the bed, clearance and towing capabilities. Hope you are well and enjoying spring!
@@BackcountrywithShaughn Haha, it takes a lot to kill a Jeep! A few of my friends went with the Tacoma, and now they swear by it, it's a good, dependable ride! I'm doing okay, had a lot of issues with my computer this year, that's really put a damper on making videos, but I'm looking forward to the summer to get back out and make some more!
@@thirstfast1025 Sorry to hear about your computer. Have you narrowed down the issues yet? If not please let me know the behavior of the issue and I might have some ideas that could help. (I work as an IT consultant to pay the bills)
@@BackcountrywithShaughn Oh, I really appreciate that, but it's mostly resolved now. First my harddrive died (lost a bunch of material I had to edit, plus things like my intro and outro clips, music, etc), so I replaced that. Re-installed windows, and it was working great, but apparently OneDrive was reactivated by default in new Windows, so it quickly filled up and that blocked access to my Outlook e-mail. Just as I was fixing that, my network card updated, update failed, so even though I had internet, computer wouldn't connect. For whatever reason, network card issue resolved itself (after a month of trying stuff like uninstalling-reinstalling the card, downloading the driver onto a USB stick, then finally leaving it alone for a week), and I was able to clear enough off OneDrive to get e-mail working again. Also disabled OneDrive for now. LOL! More a comedy of errors than any serious problems (other than the hard drive crash, that hurt). I hope you get a little chuckle out of that silly series of events tho, all i do now is laugh when a new problem surfaces.😆🖥💥 🔥
@@thirstfast1025 For the future, go ahead and disable sync to Onedrive of your .ost file that lives under your user profile. Typically located here: Users/%username%/appdata/local/microsoft/outlook (there are some slight variations of the location based off the version of Windows you are using) As long as you leave the mail in your online mailbox (Cached mode), you shouldn't need to be duplicating that file up into OneDrive. Hope that makes sense.
Gonna vacation with my daughter, come june. Succor canyon, leslie canyon, graveyard point and all kinds of places out there. Looking at google maps in satellite, i see a lot of those spots you call "dufty"? Looks like I'm gonna map some of those for our trip. Your videos are getting us beyond excited. What river is that at the end? Looks like a nice place to camp. Thank you for posting the videos.
That's awesome DG and should be a great trip for sure. I will be in that general area myself in July for a trip to Juntura, Owyhee canyons, Succor Creek(Leslie, Board Corral, Long and Three Finger Gulches) and then when am bored with all that fun am off to the Ochoco Forest to dig a new hole for some cool red/blue thunder eggs~ Unfortunately, the river shown at the end of this video is much farther north from the rest of the video up on the John Day outside Fossil, Oregon. I stopped there to wash the "trail dust" off and cool down after a hot trip on my way north and west across the mountains. The creek is really nice at Succor Creek and definitely a cool place to camp down in the canyon IMO. You can also camp along the Owyhee river itself at a few spots on the way to the larger more popular reservoir campgrounds and boat launch. Should be a whole bunch of awesome memories for you and your daughter to share the rest of your lives!
@Backcountry with Shaughn we'll have to check out those other canyons you mentioned, as well. Our road trips always include agate hunting, or some kind of mineral because it takes us to the coolest places. Last year we toured 14 of our western states starting in California. Looked for Montana agates and probably looked right at them and didn't know. We're used to our beach agates here near the boarder with oregon. But we did find a lot of plate agate (thanks for the video of you cutting those), druzy and botryoidal in Nebraska's Oglala National Grasslands. Spent a couple hours at the Fairburn agate beds in SD then again, might have looked right at some and didn't know. Then we eventually ended up at the Davis creek obsidian mine for some rainbow obsidian. My daughter wants to start our trip in the eastern oregon area first. It'll be nice to actually spend unhurried time. We're only touring Oregon this year. The eastern canyons, then working our way towards Prineville. Looks like some promising spots around there and central Oregon. Limb casts of blue and green, some opalized. Thundereggs, etc. It'll be fun. Watching your videos has shown me how to spot the rough a bit better than I knew before. So we shouldn't come home empty handed. And I just ordered some canvas backpacks like you use. Better than using our nylon camping packs. Thanks again for the vids! Edit: also, along Leslie gulch road is an offshoot called Dago Gulch. There's a large blue-green outcropping up there that looks intriguing, at least on google earth. Any idea what that might be? If not, I'll let you know. Darrell.
@@DG-kq8zf I think I know exactly the mineralized spot you are talking about off Leslie gulch road but gotta be honest, am usually just driving down that road to the reservoir to wash the dust off so haven't hunted any of those particular canyons/draws. Definitely check out that formation though, there are some really amazing materials to be found out there~ One year I'm going to rent a houseboat and just float around that reservoir stopping and hiking up canyons to see what kinda goodies can be found. On the west side of the reservoir there is more goodness in some known and not so known spots as well. Virtually all BLM land from Vale on down to the water~ I have to say, i've never had to replace my canvas backpack in all the years i've been hunting so am happy for choosing canvas and adding a couple stitches in the straps just for safety sake. In wet or dry whatever the conditions, it's held up and carried the pretty rocks back home for me. Tons of stuff to find outside Prineville as well, batcave jasper near the reservoir, thundereggs all over different spots in the Ochoco forest, Hampton Buttes off Hwy 20 for green or red pet wood or even glass butte for more obsidian. Anyway, sounds amazing and wish I had more time off available to spend more time wandering around finding pretty places and materials!
@Backcountry with Shaughn ok, then. I'll just have to let you know what I find down there. It's all about the hunt, after all. 🙂 we went to Chapman's Gem Museum today to look at all the geodes, agates, minerals etc because we never thought to look at the rough side. We only looked at the cut/polished sides. We have even a better idea now. This will be our best hunt yet, I'm sure.
Haha, leaverite. That's what we tell the newbies that find a keeper and ask if it's an agate.
I found like thirty of these incased in clay at the river Cut one it's dark grey with a splash of cream color
I've been to that spot lol 😆

Thanks again Kyla, am very fortunate to have been able to put together a nice mineral collection alongside the rock collection. Awesome thunder eggs! Love the one with the water lines and the one with the long flow channel, they are all really great. You did an amazing job polishing them! Love the colors and plumes! The one side looks like it is part plume and part flame agate. Very beautiful job polishing it. Thanks for sharing! ✌️🤠
Thanks Kyla for the view, comment and compliment, very much appreciated. When I found this chunk sticking out of the ground out at graveyard point I almost lost my mind and am very grateful for the piece. I cut it into four virtually equal size chunks and polished up the faces of each one. It's truly a one of a kind plume agate and provides me a wonderful memory and representation of the material from out there. Lastly, IMO it's just darn pretty to look at? Thanks again and have a nice day!
Great finds
Can i use angle grinder for cutting and grinding big agates? For carving and sculpting work? Thanks 🙏🏻
Yes, there are a variety of attachments you can apply to do the work, please wear breathing and eye protection as silicate dust causes sever lung issues. I use the angle grinder for shaping yard sized stones before the wet angle grinder to polish myself but you could do most of it with just an angle grinder. Check out Kevin Nix channel or Paul the Rockhound, they both use angle grinders to polish in some videos!

Hi Will, thanks for letting me know. Sorry for the delay in sending them but i've been out n about the deserts finding pretty stuff and not home very much. I packed it so long ago I'd forgotten what I put in there...if I remember it was a mix of slabs(hope those arrived intact), random rocks (plume, etc agates), a couple little thundereggs. If you cut the eggs on a tile saw or lapidary saw, please make sure to cut along the longest seam around the egg for the best presentation of the stuff inside. Anyway, just wanted to show my appreciation for you sending me that box of agates earlier this year, was great to add those to my collection! Please let me know if you have any questions and will do my best to give/get you the answers. Have a nice week sir~
going tomorrow for a whole week.. Super excited. 3rd time to Graveyard Point.
That's really awesome, thanks for sharing! Hopefully it didn't/won't rain and get sloppy out there for ya!🤞🙏 I went out there a few years ago about 11pm at night right after a rain and the mud seriously caked the interior of the jeeps wheel wells and if I'd been a much more passive driver the vehicle would've gotten stuck but went Baha till I was on top of a hill then camped for the night. The next day had to knock down the dried mud in those wheel wells just to turn the steering wheel. The place is also getting claimed up by private parties so if you're ever gonna get a chance to meander those hills and find some nice stuff it'll be sooner rather than later~ Thanks again for the comment!
nice, we are headed out this coming week!
@@BackcountrywithShaughn those places should stay open to the public . The blm has had many letters and people log complaints . It's supposed to all be open to public except mineral claims . Agate wood and Jasper and obsidian was never on the list on Oregon .

You have to know your awesome brother⚡Even if the You Tubers don't. You could use a better camera, as I could myself. I can appreciate your videos regardless. Showing me what you find and what your doing😎 Is adventure sharing enough, to a person also doing the same. Thank you Sir & Happy Adventures to Ya👍
Wow, thank you so very much for the view, comment and super amazing kind words. I cannot express enough how much I appreciate that.👍 We're all on the earth for just a short period and I just wanted to share on here a little slice of my time, adventures and passion for beautiful places/people/things/rocks/minerals related with anyone who's interested.🤷♂️🤦♂️ Yes absolutely correct a better camera is/was in order so I picked up a GP8 in January that does 4K video quality and have taken quite a bit of video this summer so far with it. Now I just need to meet someone who's passionate about editing and posting videos like I am about the rocks! haha You prove again that the hounding community on TH-cam is full of really excellent people. Thank you again, super appreciated, hope you have a great rest of your week!
@@BackcountrywithShaughn Thank you my friend. Best wishes to you and yours, in all that you endeavor in😎👍
You mentioned your not far from Graveyard point, May I ask where you live?
Hey Larry, not far is relative. It's an 8 hour drive from my house outside Portland to GYP. Unfortunately I should tell you, commercial interests have stepped in and claimed virtually everywhere I have ever hunted in GYP and they use heavy equipment to strip out all the pretty stuff leaving nothing for future generations to enjoy. (Unless you buy it from them) The days of walking around finding pretty rocks seems to be quickly coming to an end in the interest of making a dollar. Folks are claiming up everything everywhere that I love to hunt rocks. If you have a chance get out there soon before it's all closed to the rest of us on OUR PUBLIC LAND.
Holy mother! Those are AWESOME finds. Curious of the story behind Graveyard Point. Definitely gonna have to research this incredible rock hunting spot! Thanks for sharing. 😁👍
