I have flown the trace at OP-A many times. Very interesting of what you can see from the air. There were places where there was no fence of any kind, just a marker and quite possibly a mine field. Someone told me that OP-A had become a tourist attraction after the reunification? I know that Downs Barracks has become an industrial complex, but the "Blackhorse" is still displayed there with historical markers.
Thanks for your post. Downs Barracks, that would be our HQ 1st Sqdn once the 14th ACR. I was stationed at our 3rd Sqdn 14th ACR reflagges as the 11th ACR. Our former kaserne McPheeters Barrack in Bad Hersfeld has many uses. Their customs officer is in our former PX Building. Our former Mess Hall is now a Motorola Radio business. To this day I regret not having exchanged a few dollars and ordering a real American T-bone steak from the NCO club. Why please was the 14th ACR turned into the 11th ACR if the personnel remained the same?
That's a good question, By accident I found via Instagram that there's a 14th ACR active today that I never hear or read about ... Check it out and let me know your thoughts .. the link instagram.com/2ndsquadron_14thcavalry/?hl=en
@@moxnix The 14th ACR on insta is an active unit. But my question is about the hystoric fact that on May 17, 1972, the 14th ACR was reflagged as the 11th ACR. As far as I understand, the personnel, association structure and equipment, etc. have remained the same. But then what was the reason for reflagging? Should the GDR border troops be unsettled by the call of the 11th ACR from Vietnam? Or were there changes in structure and equipment; Personnel and method of operation? Or what happened there in 1972 please?
I watched a video of benefits of bicycling every day and I saw your comment

The 3 squadrons of the 14th ACR. What are the specific jobs or so of the 1st and 2nd if the 3rd is recon?
Thanks for your question, the best way to to sum it up is by Dark Turner and the attached video “The 14th Armored Cavalry, through the use of highly mobile vehicles, extensive communications and well trained men, maintains a constant vigilance along the border that separates the Free World and Communism. The mission of the regiment is continuous surveillance of border activity, and that of an early warning system in the event of hostile aggressive action on the part of a Soviet Bloc or Satellite forces within its assigned sector of responsibility.” ............ a small correction my friend: it was 1993 that 3/11 in Bad Hersfeld was inactivated, not 1990.
Correction, negative my friend, it was 1990 because that is when we stopped the border patrol. Troops remained there after 1990 but there was no border patrol, no alerts etc..
