Bio–Psycho–Social–Cultural–Systemic–Ecological Framework
In this video, we build on earlier metatheoretical frameworks for understanding the challenges that clients bring to counselling and psychotherapy: bio-psycho-social model (Englel, 1977), bio-psycho-social-spiritual (Sulmasy, 2002), bio-psycho-social-cultural (Hilty, 2015), and bio-psycho-social-cultural-systemic (Collins, 2018, 2022). By integrating an ecological lens, we attend to the many ways in which client health is impacted by their relationship to the natural world and current ecological violence and crises. We demonstrate the application of the bio-psycho-social-cultural-systemic-ecological (BPSC-SE) framework to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health and well-being of individuals, families, communities, and societies as a whole.

It is human nature to make assumptions as we engage in conversations with one another. I'm not sure that I agree. This is incorrectly labelling paraphrasing and reflecting feelings as "reflecting meaning".

    • @SandraCollinsDr
      @SandraCollinsDr 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank for the query. There are different ways of defining microskills - language choices and specific parameters. In the framework that we are using, a counsellor statement could include a feeling word like "torn," but if the focus is on the reason why the client is feeling this way, as in this case of a values tension or dilemma, we interpret this as a statement related to meaning-making (i.e., why are they feeling torn versus what are they feeling?). A reflection of feeling would be simpler and shorter: "You are feeling torn." If you are interested the specific framework we are using to define these microskills, check out our ebook at: pressbooks.pub/responsiverelationships/. Sandra

      Interesting. Adobe has recently updated their program, and I can't see how to add the back button my screen. I'll keep checking into this. In the meantime, you have two options. On top menu, you can used "View" then "Page navigation" the "Previous page" but this is cumbersome. On my mac, I can just use "command" and the back arrow on my keyboard. It might be "alt" + back arrow on PC. If you continue to have issues email order@counsellingconcepts.ca, and we'll sort it out.

      Are you kidding? Most marriage seem to work this way. In this case the guy is expecting direct communication ( they will ask for what they need). While the woman is engaging in indirect communication and wanting her need to be anticipated. so she can get what she wants without having to risk asking for it directly. I’ve seen this kind of miscommunication play out so many times IRW, words fail…..

    Great video. Could you explain more context on the low-context values the US has in concept?

    • @SandraCollinsDr
      @SandraCollinsDr ปีที่แล้ว

      The US is a very multicultural society in which people connect with low-context or high-context communication styles based on family, cultural heritage, socialization. These are also not either/or concepts; patterns of communication may shift over time and across concepts. We can talk in terms of the dominant ways of communicating that are grounded in eurowestern worldviews as low-context. Here the message is communicated through the specific words, and communication is relatively direct, succinct, and linear. Many US citizens, however, value more implicit forms of communication that are embedded in relationship. In these higher-context cultures, meaning is communicated through more than just words. It is important to pay attention to cultural context, nonverbal cues, and the relationship between the listener and the speaker. Sandra

    Can you explain in more detail? What role does context play in this example?

    • @SandraCollinsDr
      @SandraCollinsDr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this video "context" refers to the cultural cues or assumptions that add meaning to the actual words. In "low context" cultures, people take what is said at face value. In "high context" cultures, what is said is interpreted in light of cultural norms, expectations, or implicit meanings. Sandra

    Culture A is high and Culture B is low, right?

    • @SandraCollinsDr
      @SandraCollinsDr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I should have made this more clear in the video. Culture A is actually low context, because all of the communication is contained in the words that are shared. Notice in Culture B that each person is making assumptions about what the other needs, rather than explicitly stating their needs. They are relying more heavily on cultural context (e.g., the expectation that friends will help each other out if they can). I have changed the video description to make this more clear. Thank you for the comment. Sandra

    I appreciated the scenario and feel I understand the difference very well now! Initially, I would have thought it was the other way around and now am reflecting to keep this in mind, that's incorrect! And try to not make that mistake on the test! A point of constructive feedback, I might have put a bit more text at the beginning of this video -- perhaps highlighting which type of context it is at which point -- to help with clarification, I found myself asking at first ''wait, which one is this we mean?" But otherwise, a GREAT video! :D

    When this book was published only as an ebook it made it difficult for persons with non-normative learning styles. People with ADHD, Dyslexia, and concussions just to name a few are all people who have difficulty reading online or on a screen. As a result I am left out of being able to fully engage this text which is a required text for my masters in counselling psychology, this presents me a barrier.

      Hi Laura. Thanks for the comment. I agree that there are benefits and challenges to the ebook format. To increase accessibility, we have placed no limit on the number of pages that you are permitted to print for your personal use (most publishers/distributors of ebooks limit print options). Also your university or college should have an accessibility services office. We will grant permission for them to print the entire ebook for you as part of their accessibility services for students. If you have other ideas for making the ebook more accessible, feel free to contact me. Sandra

    Thank you so much for your Open Source generosity. I see relevant parallels between this approach and Dr. Ross Green's Collaborative ProActive Solutions. Responsiveness is the critical draw for me. Arbitrarily plugging individuals into a static method has always unsettled me as unjustly narrow and restrictive, especially if that method is singularly focused on the One right way /practice.
