    Nice tip. I usually just go out with a push broom and knock the snow off of my panels. I do not worry about getting them perfectly clean since, as you have demonstrated, the snow will rapidly melt off on its own once the panels get some direct exposure.

    Slick, If ya do it at the top I think the heated melt would soak down and clear even faster. If you wanted to get crafty could position a few mirrors on a post somewhere to shine condensed light at the top of the panels and never have to scrape again :D for free.. otherwise a heated blanket at the top of the underside of those could be kicked on for a bit to melt the tops too. Something as simple as a nitrous oxide auto racing tank blanket warmer or anything comparable.

      I have done exactly that! First disconnect panels from the inverter. Then apply 240 VAC to a Variac, then a bridge rectifier. that controllable current is fed to the panels.

    • @HippieHillHomestead
      @HippieHillHomestead 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Most panels have blocking diodes that keep the power from "reversing". I guess if you bypassed the diodes then you could melt the snow that way. Thanks for sharing.

Trick is not to scrape the panels and leave scratch marks. But yes if you can get some panel showing the sun and heat will do the rest. If there is ice then just make sure I get the loose snow off.

    What if you had plastic sheet conveyor belt with rollers at the top and bottom of the frame, a small dc motor, and a light sensor near the bottom? If snow covers it, it rolls (towards the bottom of the frame to dump off all the snow) until the sensor gets light. Just an idea to automate it so you dont have to scrape off sections in super cold temps :)

      Now that would be sooo cool 😎 . What a great idea.

  •  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I agree that all it takes is a spot for the light to hit the panel.. Between the direct heat transfer and the indirect of the energy being created with nowhere to go except be resistively dissipated by the adjoining cells they can clear off fast.. Problem is when you get a foot+ of snow on them and they are on a roof scraping off that deep snow can be hours of labor with a foam scraper and a pole.. I saw a guy use a length of rope to pull a huge layer of snow off a metal roof and wonder if I could set a rope up there with my pole and get it to undercut the snow and pull it off without busting something??

    • @HippieHillHomestead
      @HippieHillHomestead 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I tried a rope years ago when we got more snow and it kept getting caught on my brackets that hold the panels down. Maybe I used to small of rope. I might try it with a half inch rope. We have a few panels on our roof and I cleared a small spot at the bottom of them( That is the only place I could reach safely from a ladder) and it took a little over 2 hrs for them to melt 6 inches of snow. Thanks for the idea.

    We have one of these i bought in 2007. Only about $850 new back then. We use it in our far West TX cabin off grid. It was a game changer. It's good to set a bag of ice in it when we first arrive for a week long stay. It helps get it colder faster without using much battery juice. I did have to rig up a fitting to add nearly a can of R134 since it slowly leaked down after several years of occasional usage. The manufacturer was easy to get in touch with for recharging advice years ago. Great product for TX desert life.

      Hi and thanks for your comment. There are several factors that determine how long you have to leave your pans in for. First is your power supply or battery charger. The more amps the quicker it will clean them. Next is the amount of washing soda, the more soda the quicker it cleans. Next is how rusty the pan is. Of course the more rust the longer it will take, and last is the tank setup. The sacrificial metal you use depending on the type and size you use. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

      Yes certain seeds need to be cold stratified to have good germination rates. With that being said I have never cold stratified any of my yarrow seeds and still get decent enough germination rates. The main thing is to mist them several times a day so they don't dry out and put them in indirect light not full sun until they sprout. If you do this you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck and if you have anymore questions please let me know.

    Drill a hole on the sun side of your mounting frame. The hole should be perpendicular to the frame in all planes. In the hole, place a dowel rod. If the dowel rod is pointing true at the sun, there will be no shadow on the frame and the lens will be aligned as accurate as can be. If there's a shadow, the lens is tilted.

    I'm glad I found your channel! I've always wanted to grow Sunflowers for roasting the seeds! How long does it take to grow those varieties with the giant seeds?

      Glad you found us.Sunflowers such as Mongolian Giant take between 90 and 100 days. These are great for roasting, along with Grey stripe. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    Can you use anything other than an old battery charger?

    • @HippieHillHomestead
      @HippieHillHomestead 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you can use a dc power supply. Dc power supply that can be adjusted to 12 volts and 5 amps.

      I find 12 laptop computer adapters at thrift stores and put alligator clips on the wires. There's a YT video of how to figure out positive from negative wires. The adapters are cheap and so far none have burned out on me in over 6 months of use. A regular PC power supply can also be used and there's videos on YT showing how to wire them. They work well and are cheaper than new power supplies or old car battery chargers that will burn out and the new chargers with auto shut off don't work for electrolysis. Have fun and be safe.

    I love your presentation. There is a statement you made about ensuring that the battery and solar charge controller is hooked up first before the PV panels. There is this fact that is being suggested that the mppt controller usually has a "block diode" that stop current from the battery going to the controller. So , how come there is power in the SCC if there is no current flow through the rover controller? Or , the Rover controller doesn't have a blocking diode ? I need clarity on it sir.

    • @HippieHillHomestead
      @HippieHillHomestead 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There shouldn't be a diode between the battery and the cc. There is a diode between the cc and the solar panels. Hope this helps.

    Sir, thanks for taking us through solar PVs...so explanatory. Sir, I need more clarity on how the DC breakers in between the solar charge controller and the battery is connected with respect to the polarity of the breaker. Thanks

    • @HippieHillHomestead
      @HippieHillHomestead 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The breaker is installed on the Positive wire only. The negative goes straight to the battery.

    To each their own,… I don’t even bother with water, for the most part,… I just scrub everything in a dedicated bucket of vegetable oil, either bake it, use it straight away or leave it for air to oxidize and plasticize the oil all the same. Heat just hastens the process. The only potential problem with using water for initial rust removal and cleaning is, that if all the water ain’t fully evaporated from the pours of the iron sufficiently, it’ll just make the initial foundational layer of seasoned harder to stick, resulting in a little rougher surface in your subsequent applications.

    • @HippieHillHomestead
      @HippieHillHomestead 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am not sure I understand your process. You scrub the rust off in a bucket of oil? Or do you put it in a bucket of oil after you get it out of your etank? Sounds interesting either way.

    How do i verify that I have a real cast iron pan. I've bought newer ones and they feel different to the touch and I'm wondering do I cure it tge same way if it's not made of the same material. I'm not sure if I'm making sense to yall. I live in Switzerland so it's called different in French.

      i belive this method works with all kind of metal

    • @HippieHillHomestead
      @HippieHillHomestead 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cast iron is generally heavier than any other pans. Yes you would season/cure the same way as older pans. We use grapeseed oil to season ours. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching.

    • @HippieHillHomestead
      @HippieHillHomestead 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it does work for other metals but if you are cleaning cookware don't put anything toxic ( such as copper paint )in your tank or it will contaminate your cookware.

    • @WizardClipAudio
      @WizardClipAudio 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      😂 Hit it really hard with a framing hammer. 🔨 if it shatters like glass, it’s cast iron. If it leaves a dent, it certainly isn’t. 😉

      Yes there are both tobacco and tomato worms in this video. Most people don’t know the difference or do they care. They just want them off their tomato plants. Larval tobacco hornworms have 7 diagonal stripes on each side and a red posterior horn, while larval tomato hornworms have 8 chevrons on each side and a bluish black horn.
