American athletes are generally known to be poor losers. Enhancement drugs or not Ben Johnson is the ultimate athlete. Enhancement drugs don't make you get up in the morning at 4am to train till sunset, the man still has to do the work. Then why wasn't Carl Lewis's medals taken back when discovered HE was also taking drugs.

At least in 100 meter sprints, drugs should not be an issue. The guy ran in 9.84 and then in 9.79 seconds. Whether he ate a cheese burger b4 the sprint, drank too much water or alcohol or whether he took a steroid, I don't care..... it's still his body running the distance in record time vch is a special achievement. Many ppl will disagree with me vn I say that unlike in a sprint, long distance runs like marathons and cross country cycling, drugs should not be permitted and of course they are not cuz they give an unfair advantage to the user over the other competitors, in fact in any athletic event except a short distance sprint it makes sense for drugs not to be allowed. Obviously the sprinter gains advantage too while under the influence but my point is that in a sprint, especially a 100 meter dash at Olympics or similar competitions, we're trying to establish or discover the quickest a human body can go. It's more of a competition with nature than anything or anybody else and if we can discover that shortest time limit by taking some potentially performance enhancer substance which we might not discover in a sober body then so be it, let 'em tk what they want and show the world what barriers can the human body cross and upto what limits can it push the speed in a sprint. Either way, with the amount of performance enhancing banned substances being used in present day athletics vch has been a trend for decades now, we are hardly surprised vn athletes fail their piss test and there are far too many across all kinds of events in this century, the amount of flak that Ben Johnson had to take when he failed his dope test was brutal and seemingly perpetual as the whole world let him have it and never stopped blaming him for using a drug to run in the olympics. They made him out to be some kind of monster and the media's barrage of insults turned him into an image of vitriol that the public could project onto. Even his own family including his mother turned against him, guess the unrelenting pressure of media turning him into a villain made his mother buckle. She never forgave him. And now, it's not an uncommon thing for athletes to use drugs in competitions even though they're banned but hardly anybody cares, even to a lesser degree about the loss of reputation (if there is any such loss given the tolerance of public towards drugs in sports nowadays). Ben Johnson could be compared to being a messiah among professional athletes of the latter half of the 20th century in the sense that he took the hatred of the world towards cheating athletes all upon himself, although unwillingly but bearing the weight of it nevertheless, for decades.....so much so that after his media and public trial which declared him guilty a few thousand times over, the world had lost it's appetite for hatred towards drugged up athletes having spent all of it on Ben J, so, in a sense, he saved the generations of athletes who came after him from taking any flak from media or the public for taking performance enhancing drugs as he he had taken the bulk of it upon himself.... That aside, until Usain Bolt ran his dashes, I always considered Ben Johnson to be the fastest man on the planet and I think there are many many ppl around the world who agree with me on the legitimacy of his record. Also, as for the man in the white hat (Carl Lewis), as talented as he was, just like the long jump competition which he lost to Mike Powell in '91 where Powell set the new world record, Carl Lewis also lost the 100 meter sprint to Ben Johnson in the '88 Seoul olympics where incidentally, Ben J also made a new world record and fastest man on the planet in recorded history. Carl Lewis may tell himself that he ran on vitamins and minerals while Ben Johnson ran on some 'purple toad venom' if it helps Carl sleep better at night safe in the blanket of his illusions but he can never deny the obvious reality that whatever either of them had or had not ingested that day, Carl with all his multi faceted talents and unparalleled olympic records never ran as fast as Ben Johnson ran on more than one occasion. I don't think that Carl Lewis from time to time over the years would have been able to avoid the question in his head that had he ever taken some kind of drug, would he have been able to run as fast or faster than Ben Johnson and consequently the flip side of this coin/question which must have plagued Lewis also would be to wonder if Johnson had not taken the drug, would he still have ran as fast as he did beating Lewis easily or would he have not broken and established a new world record of 9.79 but what remains is that Ben Johnson took the chance and the risk, became the fastest man ever to run a 100 meter sprint and then became the object of the world's hatred, Carl Lewis never tried to break the rules or use any kind of drug and thus he retained the respect of the athletic world and the fans alike but he never ran as fast as Ben Johnson did. On a lighter note, as a kid growing up, Ben Johnson, Maradona, Mike Tyson and Bruce Lee were as close as anybody came to being a super-human. They were men with MAD skills and a lot of us kids were delighted to grow up watching the incredible talents of these people. Among those known to me in my wonder years, anybody who was any good at any sport or physical activity was inspired by one or more of these four men.
