Mike is no stranger to the West and it’s lifestyle. From cowboying on one of the west’s largest ranches, horseback packing in the Rockies, being a lease agent on the Crow Indian Reservation, to running sled dogs in the Colorado high country in the winter, Mike not only lives in the West, Mike lives the West, and that is what he paints, the West.
“ I paint the people, places and things of small town, rural America. From the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains, to the towering grain silos of Kansas or the small adobe casas of New Mexico, to the fishing boats in a marina on the Northern California coast, the cowboys of Montana, the bewhiskered bikers of Sturgis or the girls on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, they all have a story.
With my painting kit I travel the backroads and by-ways of America, often on my motorcycle, seeking out the character of my subjects and capture it using the effect of light, shadow, shape and value.”

Winter Watercolor Painting from a photograph with a surprise ending
On the way to my studio in Ouray, Colorado recently I pulled over to photograph a scene that looked appealing enough to paint. Full demo of how I did it with a surprise ending to the video and a special clip at the end as well.

I'm the one that bought this painting and I love it! It was so fun to watch your video and see this beautiful art come to fruition. Thank you so much for creating this work!
Yeah, a lot less cold to do it in the studio! :) Beautiful painting. Lucky customer! Have you ever painted redwood trees?
HaH! Exactly. Not as tough as I used to be. No, I never have. Would love to however. That'd be pretty cool to stand in a grove of Redwoods and do a painting. Might be hard to see the forest for the trees however, lol.
Let me know in the comments if there is something specific you'd like to see.. As always, thanks for watching. I appreciate it.
I really enjoy watching you paint as you turn a blank canvas into a scene with depth and character and feeling is…kinda magical. Thanks for the narration too. Makes the process more real. Love it!
Glad you enjoyed it Jean. Thanks for watching.
Nice video, Mike! Congratulations on the sale!
Thanks Donna. It was a surprise ending for sure!
Beautiful! I've stopped at that same overlook many times.
It's a natural. I've done several paintings from that spot. There are a couple of great views between Ridgway and Ouray. Unfortunately not always a place to pull over however.
Great video and life! I lived for a while in White Water CO, Vietnam era vet, (AF), rode MCs, bikes now and ruining a lot of canvas and H2Ocolor paper. Your tale is very inspirational to me. I'm 80 and better 'kick it up a notch'. Love your work as well. Blessings, Jim
Thank you sir. I appreciate it.
My first Colorado outdoor painting was done on the Uncompagrhe plateau. Nice to see you in action, Mike!
Thanks Carl. It's fun to do these. Makes me think about what I'm doing.
Really like the way you captured the warm light. Would love to hear more about your thinking when you decide to change things (eg the aspen and the ground),
Thanks Jim. The basic idea of shortening the aspen was strictly from an eye pleasing perspective for me. The dominance of the color dictated that the taller stature of the tree wasn't necessary. Darkening the foreground was based on the idea that GENERALLY speaking, the foreground will be darker than the distant ground. As things recede they will become lighter in value and cooler in color temperature. One way to lighten the value of something and to cool it off in temperature is to darken the foreground and make it warmer, which worked better in this case since the overall tone of the painting was rather high key to begin with. The idea of using the plein air "sketch" to just gather some basic information and then using that information and experience from general observation back in the studio to establish a more "finished" painting was the idea. One could do an entirely different painting back in the studio just using the sketch as the reference material instead of a photograph, which can still be done in this case, providing I don't sell the field sketch. Hope that helps. Thanks for asking.
@@mikesimpsonart Fascinating! I love the theory behind it all. Thanks for taking the time to explain. Would love to see commentary like this in your videos!
@@jamesdziura5114 I'll do that. Thanks for the input.
What a great video! I enjoy watching how you create and then change your piece. Thanks!
Thanks Jean. I appreciate your watching.
I like the finishing at the end, nice touch!
Nice! It's so fun to watch it take shape!
Glad it made sense to you.
Let me know in the comments what you liked about the video or disliked. Also let me know what else you'd like to see me do a video on.
Fascinating! What was the “real time” from start to finish on this piece? Love it!
Hmmm...good question Jean. I know I painted it over two days but total real time was probably 4 or 5 hours. Hard to say accurately since I'll paint awhile then let it sit while I observe what I've done, studying it and thinking about what changes I might make or how I'll proceed.
Your art is just the best. The fall aspens just take my breath away. Thank you . I love it.
Thank you very much for that. I appreciate it.
Wow, that's so cool! What a great idea. I love that you added a little golden light to the peaks :)
Thanks. The sun kept peaking in and out of the clouds. I had to remember various sun highlights as I did the painting It was a lot of fun to go do that and I was honored to be invited and included.
When you start a painting and you're blocking in the big areas of color, do you always start with the lightest colors and move to the darkest?
Good question. Generally speaking, one wants to try and establish the lightest light and the darkest dark as soon as possible so that the rest of the values can be built in relation to those. Additionally, one needs to remember that it is always easier to lighten a dark than it is to darken a light. Little truisms. For me anyway, it's always a process of adjustments as the painting develops.
A very warm painting, thanks for listing your colour pallet and filming from your perspective, it was fun to learn about your approach to landscape painting!
Thanks for watching.
Amazing perspective. Lucky people.
Isn't that cool? What a view.
Great video Mike, thanks for sharing the process! Hope to see more.
They'll be coming. Thanks for watching.
I really, really enjoy your aspen paintings!
@@HRGreisz thank you ma’am. They are fun to do.
Me, too!
Beautiful scenery. Peaceful ride!
What a beautiful painting. Loved your demonstration. Thank you so much for sharing your talent.
Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you found some enjoyment watching it.
Another interesting and informative demo! Curious about why /when you choose the palette knife vs brush. The tree trimming at the end was a great call-looks more like our beautiful aspen. I’m a fan of realism over impressionist style…. You’re kind of in between. 👍👍😍
I really enjoyed watching, it was amazing to see how you makes blank canvas turn into a beautiful and restful place to look at. Thanks for sharing your talent
Thank you for the kind words Elma. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching.
Hi Mike, I met you spring of 23 with our art group in Ouray. Love your style. Love how you put together all the shapes, colors and design so beautifully! Thank you for sharing!
Yes, I remember. So glad you enjoyed this and got something out of it. Please share it with others and thank you so much for the comment.
Turned out great. I love watching you paint!
Thanks Mary. I've got another good one coming up.
I like what you did with the porch roof at the end.
Sometimes it just takes a little correction to make it work. Thanks for noticing.
Another nice one, Mike!
Thanks Donna. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing, Mike! Watching how you handle your brush is so helpful! Love the painting!
Thanks so much Lois for the nice comment. I'm glad you find some value in these videos. Missed you this summer.
Excellent painting, Mike!! Sure enjoyed your video and love the painting!
Thanks Ken. I appreciate the comment here. That helps a bunch. I also appreciate you taking the time to watch.

That's the sound of a finely engineered and tuned machine!
I really like seeing the different techniques and tools you use to bring out the textures in the rocks, dirt, grass, and shrubbery in the foreground. And the contrast in tones between that and the mountains, sky and clouds. But you still bring hints of the warm tones into the mountains, too. Beautiful.
Thank you. I appreciate the comment.
The over-the-shoulder angle is so cool to see. Love these videos!
Boy, that hill start feature would be nice to have.
definitely is...especially here in Ouray.
Fun ride! Parking in Ouray is certainly a challenge-especially in the winter!
You're sure right about that.
Fascinating! I enjoyed watching the process, having never worked in oil paints. Your handling of the brushes-flat, edge, tip-and the palette knife is interesting too. Thanks for talking us through what you’re thinking as you paint. Great video-and a lovely finished product!
Thanks Jean. So glad you found it interesting. Makes it all worthwhile of me to hear that.
I am fascinated with your painting techniques. Thank you so much for sharing your art and talent. It is beautiful. Maybe I will try water color again.. Blessings to you an family
Well, thank you so much for the kind words. Be brave and just start again.
I love this! It is fascinating to see how it all comes together and to understand your thought process.
Thanks Donna. I appreciate the comment and your taking the time to watch it.
Always a joy to see over your shoulder and watch your picture come to life!
Thank you sir. I appreciate it.
Thanks Bob. Glad you enjoyed it.
Love all the techniques you use to get the different effects. End result is lovely.
Thanks Kate.
Fascinating to watch, Mike! I love how you encourage the paint to flow “up” 😁
Thanks Jean. Fun to do...video and paint.
Well done and inspiring.
Thanks. My son gets all of teh credit for putting together such a wonderful piece. I just sat there and told my story.
Beautiful story Mike. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
