2025 CDT Training Plan Pt. 3
In this final video of my CDT training series, I talk about the final component of my CDT training series program…a weekly long hike. Each week, I complete a long hike with a fully weighted pack (26 - 40 pounds). I increase either the distance hiked or the elevation gained each week. I’m currently up to 15 miles. By the time I begin my CDT journey, my weekly long hike will be 20+ miles.

2025 CDT Announcement
มุมมอง 510หลายเดือนก่อน
I have decided to begin my CDT journey on May 1st, 2025! Originally, I planned on thru hiking the entire trail this year. Due to several factors, I have decided to break up my thru hike into several long sections over the next several seasons. This year, I will begin at the CDT southern terminus and hike northbound through New Mexico and the San Juan section of Colorado - ending at Spring Creek...

Day 2 of my Section Hike NoBo (northbound) on the Colorado Trail. I completed Segment 27 - starting at Taylor Lake and ending at Hotel Draw Rd. - 19.8 miles total with 2,620 feet of elevation gain. Most of the day was a beautiful ridge walk. Unfortunately, I pushed it too much Day 1 and came down with a bug. My husband met me at the road and I got off trail. Endlich Mesa to City Reservoir - Beautiful views and great fishing
มุมมอง 1135 หลายเดือนก่อน
Steve and I did a short overnight backpacking trip to City Reservoir. This trail has some steep climbing, but spectacular views! The lake was full of brook trout that made for a tasty dinner. A pretty waterfall was a short hike downstream from the lake. The trail was in good condition and pretty easy to follow. I’ll probably end up hiking this one again but continue on further to where it meets...

So awesome!! Gosh there is so little snow up there! Scary! Another great video!
I can’t remember having so little snow here this time of year. We still have February and March…but no significant snow is projected in the forecast yet.
So awesome! Go Michelle go!! So exciting to follow you!!
Thank you! I’m excited to get started!
Why not just use your backpack weighted to your carry weight?
Good question! That is definitely an option, but I’ve been wanting to improve my grip strength. Holding the 15-20 pound weights for the duration is a good way to do that. I do use my fully weighted pack on all my outdoor hikes though.😊
Great Video Michelle!! Excellent workouts!
Hopefully, they’ll help me be well prepared!😊
@ Beast Mode!!
@ ❤️
We were at Lake Vellicito years ago in the summer. Such a beautiful area. How thick is the ice?
It’s at least 9 inches thick. There were a few people out skating across the lake!
@HikeLikeaGirl Wow, 9"! That's thick!
Great workout! Great exercises for the core 👍🏼
I have my daughter to thank for that core routine!
@ that’s awesome
Love your channel Michelle! Looking forward to your videos of the CDT!
I like your plan. It does make it an easier, more enjoyable hike I think. I used to work for a company where I was able to be on the east coast over an extended period of time. During that time I spent a fair amount of weekends there. So I decided to hike the Appalachian Trail. I did this from south to north. I applaud you for being aware of the conditions that you have to work with and having a reasonable outlook and plan. Enjoy your trek.
I appreciate it. I’m pretty excited to get started! Thank you for sharing your experience on the AT. I think my love for backpacking was “born” when I was a young girl listening to my mom talk about her dream to one day hike the AT😊
Good luck out there. Be safe and have fun.
Thank you! I will😊
This is awesome! ❤ We'd love to hike the CDT and the PCT, as well as the Appalachian Trail. Way to go! 😊 We're looking forward to seeing your journey. It's smart to break it up. New subscribers and friends here. God bless you! 🙏🏻
Thanks for following along! Maybe I’ll run into ya’ll on trail one day!😊
You're welcome! Maybe! We love the San Juans. 💞
New subscriber here. I look forward to your journey. I like the way you are doing this because it helps people understand that this adventure does not have to be done all at once. I feel that is very important for people to see. Good luck and most of all have fun.
Nice to meet you! I was actually a little bummed at first to not be doing the CDT as a continuous thru hike, but now I’m really excited! I realized I would enjoy it so much more if I didn’t have to sacrifice so much time away from my family. Plus, since I won’t be “racing” my way north, I’ll have time for some side adventures along the way!
I’m looking forward to following your experiences! @JonsDadHikes
I’m excited to share them😊
Looking forward to seeing your progress! Always love your videos ❤
Thank you! I’m looking forward to it!😊
@ I’m glad you got to move to Durango! That’s so exciting! I’m somewhat envious since I grew up there! So many awesome places to hike near there! God bless your journeys and time in the mountains!!

Awesome, Just do what works for you, This will be fun to see a local do this.
I’m getting excited! Since I won’t be so time crunched, I’ll have more time for side excursions (like climbing 14ers) along the way😊
@@HikeLikeaGirl That sounds awesome.
Boy there’s not much snow this year! Blue sky is so vivid!! Beautiful
Yeah. We had a pretty good amount early in November that melted off, then nothing for over a month. We finally got a few more inches, but it’s melting fast!
@@HikeLikeaGirl Praying The Lord will bring some soon! The whole region is so dry! 🙏🏼❄️
@ me, too!❤️
That is sketchy!! Yikes! Micro spike territory for sure!!
Get yourself some micro spikes girl. Game changer for me. In fact I have more traction on ice in micro spikes that rubber on rock. They are relatively light and I just keep them in my backpack during the winter months.
Definitely a game changer for winter/icy hiking. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have been able to get down and back up most of that trail without them. That short section, the ice was so smooth, hard, and convex that the spikes were just barely getting a bite…It was definitely easier going uphill though!
Another excellent video.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent video :)
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it😊
Another amazing video Michelle! ❤
Thank you so much!!
@@HikeLikeaGirl is the Lime Mesa trailhead at the end of the Missionary ridge road? Did you go by Ruby, pear, Webb or emerald lakes? I’m super interested in going that way to the Chicago Basin sometime after watching this video! So cool!
Actually you answered my questions in your video. If you get the chance to go back, all of the lakes have (had) great fish in them! Good camping spots in the trees too!
@@bartrice8278yes, you can access the trailhead at the end of Missionary Ridge Road for a much shorter hike than I did. I started just north of Lemon Reservoir and hiked up to Lime Mesa on the Burnt Timber Trail before joining Lime Mesa. I hiked to the overlook of Ruby and Emerald, but I didn’t drop down to them because some weather moved in. I’m heading back up there tomorrow though so I can explore around the lakes!
@@HikeLikeaGirl that’s awesome! That sounds like a great hike! How many miles to the overlook from where you started?
Beautiful trail. Thanks for sharing. 👍5
I think this is my new favorite trail!
Another great preview of some trails that I might not have ever given any consideration to. Seems like the whole area is worth exploring. I feel like I should consider moving closer… so I could experience the San Juan’s more often.
It’s amazing how many beautiful trails there are! Since many of them are so remote, I rarely see other people on the trails…so it’s always a true wilderness experience!
It’s scary isn’t it! Glad you are ok!👍🏼
Me, too! I’m glad our interaction went the way it did! It was a beautiful bear though!
Wow!! Be careful out there!
U know... as I was praying... it occured *again to me that "everything happens for a reason, & if u got sick... maybe better than something else!! sooooo xoxo
The thought crossed my mind. …that and that sometimes God has to slow me down to get me to listen!😊
Oh nooo!! I'm sorry u got ill... Hope u are on the mend quickly... xoxo Recovery prayers sent up in Jesus name!!
So awesome!!! Safety prayers sent up!! What a wonderful adventure!
I can see why you keep going up! I can just imagine the feeling being there. Humbling yet empowering at the same time. Hope you are feeling better by now? ❤️
Feeling much better now!
Another great video!! My first “real” job was when I was 15 and I helped with trail reconstruction of the clear creek trail from Hermosa creek up to the LaPlata’s. I wish I still lived in Durango! Sure miss it!
What a neat first job to have! I bet that was hard but rewarding work!
@@HikeLikeaGirl it was hard and fun at the same time! Got spend a lot time out in the mountains as we packed in and stayed for the week and came out of Friday afternoon! Great time!
Spectacular scenery, thank you! You never cease to amaze me with your strength, endurance and stamina. Sorry you got a bug but you have to take care of you first and foremost!
Thank you! I think I just overdid it that first day….and I know better😂
Another wonderful video!! Thank You Michelle!! These videos bring back so many wonderful memories!! I love the Junction Creek area!

Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks for watching!
Oh my goodness another great video! I did this hike with my dad and brother when I was 10 years old with our church’s youth group! It was long…especially for a young man!
The climb back up from the lake was a struggle…but it was sure beautiful!
@@HikeLikeaGirl we went out on the Missionary ridge route. It seems like the hike went on forever!
@@bartrice8278 wow! That is a long route! I bet that was quite the adventure…especially for a 10 year old!
@@HikeLikeaGirl I’d love to go back up there! Your video brought back many great memories! I love that whole area! I also went on a backpacking trip from Vallecito to Purgatory when I was 14 with our youth group! It rained the whole time! It was still fun!
Maybe one day we’ll pass each other on the trail!
Another Missing Person over there. That is odd, Alvie Webb, Jim Shadid, Daniel Lamthatch, David Lunde are all still missing over there. I went over in July to look for Jim but had no luck. You stay safe over there.
That is a lot of missing people. I will do my best!
Wow :) How bad ass!!! I'm leaving to do the same route pretty much as you, but only going till Emerald.

Awesome. I bet there is some great Elk hunting up in there. Looks like a blast, And making memories with your daughter. Can't beat that.
We saw signs of elk, but no elk this trip. We did see quite a few mule deer though.
@@HikeLikeaGirl Nice, You have the perfect workout for the CDT.
What time of year was this? Just wondering about the creek height. I’m thinking it should be able to be crossed soon.
This was early July, but I was able to cross the creek at that same place 2 weeks earlier in mid June. At that point, it was just barely doable. I’m 5’8” and the water was above my waist and flowing fast from snowmelt. This time, the water was at least 2 feet higher from recent heavy rain runoff. It really just depends on snow levels and rain.
@@HikeLikeaGirl Thanks. Looks like a great trip. I’ve been to those areas a few times and the solitude is awesome, I bet the river height kept the crowds down. That’s a lot of mileage for each day and some rough terrain/elevation.
