    Hi, i just watched your tutorial on how paint a gradient. That was amazing. Is it possible to achieve a smooth wash "wet on dry" on a hot pressed paper? I have been trying to achieve a smooth wash but the paper absorbs the water quickly making it almost impossible to get a smooth wash.

    I wonder if skipping the tape altogether and using blu-tac instead would work. Or take an oversized piece of flat cardboard and stick the w/c paper to it with double-sided tape, then tape the whole production to the table. You should be able to strip the painting off the backing, perhaps damaging the back of the painting a bit but who cares..

    I am just a little late on commenting, but felt compelled to let you know a couple things. First of all, beautiful work. There is definitely something mysterious and secretive here. The eyes are spot on. And I also love the hair. I think you might be just a little too hard on yourself about that. The main thing I wanted to tell you is that this inspired me to get out my colored pencils and do a little somethin' somethin'. I hope you are receiving this as a huge compliment as I am intending. Watching you do this was so relaxing and just kept pushing me to get everything out and get started. If only 1 person was inspired to follow suit and do a project themselves, then the work you did to film and post this was totally worth it. Not to mention the relaxation it must bring to all who watch. I hope that you keep putting your projects online for the world. I for one will be here to watch 😊

    In the U.S., I use Scotch blue masking tape and rarely have any issues. Years ago I had a job setting up audio for stage shows; we used tons of masking tape for holding down microphone cords. Each day, the venue was required to provide us with the tape and consequently we received many brands of the same tape. Quality varied hugely depending on the manufacturer of the tape. If you haven't I'd recommend trying different brands until you find the right one for you. Second, when removing tape from a drawing, I've found the gently pulling it off at a 90 degree angle to the direction of the tape minimizes tears. Thank you for this video.

    Using a hair dryer (the heat) weakens the sticky on back & if do it quickly & towards the side but so far works great! Tape found that give bleed free borders use “blue painter’s tape” but says for sharp lines & so far doing it’s job. Ty for these videos & if keeping my whole page wet (as a beginner) isn’t easy. More practice!

    Use a hairdryer

  • @michaelegbert5975
    @michaelegbert5975 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you heat the tape with a hairdryer, it should come up cleanly. Alternatively, you can use console tape (also known as washi tape), which doesn't tear most papers. Legion Stonehenge is notorious for tearing, but the hairdryer method works great.

    If you’re having trouble with the color leaking under the tape you can try doing a coat of a clear poly or white paint over the edge of the tape first. This is a house painter trick for getting sharp lines. I’ve never tried it with watercolor on paper,usually latex on Sheetrock, so don’t know if it will effect the edge near the tape making it less absorbent but maybe worth some thought

  • @jeannefinocchiaro8348

    I recommend the M. Graham titanium white gouache! And adding glycerin and/or honey is essential with the Holbein gouache or once it completely dries it becomes a wasted crumbling rock. (I learned that the hard way…) even if you are vegetarian/vegan using already purchased (or gifted) products containing animal products is far more respectful (and less wasteful) than refusing to use it at all. Overall I think gouache has become my favourite medium tied with digital art. I advise people get and try using makeup brushes with gouache; my cheap dollar store makeup brushes have been a great addition to my paintbrushes. I also have been mixing watercolour and gouache and using non standard often coloured papers. Interesting video thanks. Also I’ve been using empty half and full pans for gouache and pre mixing lots of colours and pre wetting which has been excellent for me as I’ve been painting easier, more and a lot faster!

    My gold standard watercolor paper is hahnemuhle papers specially Cezzane and turner series, They have best and most durable sizing so far. Since my art store hasn't refill their stock, im eyeing on this paper cause the other brand they have is saunders waterford which i find to have a very weak sizing to my taste. I normally do heavy wet layers, and saunder couldnt handle it, to the point that the colors are bleading everywhere even at the back of the paper. Because of weak sizing it just keep absorbing water after 2-3 layers, you can no longer make a puddle of water after a few layers.. and you loose the wet to wet capabilities of watercolor. Since you find it less absorbent than saunders, i might as well as try for the meantime.

    I absolutely hate plastic pallets, but I do buy the 72 well double decker mijello pallet for my gouche. It has a plastic shelf that sits ontop of the main pallet, so that way all the wells store face up ( so even if the gouache crumbles, it won't fall out onto the rest of your pallet )... plus has 72 wells! I also add glycerin to my gouache also, but they will still always crack. It just allows them to rewet to full strength like wet gouache. However I do only use schmincke and Holbein gouache, because M. Graham can get moldy and way to sticky feeling and winsor and newton designer gouche isn't lightfast. I do absolutely love how the W&N gouache lays down, but even their " lightfast " colors fade a bit. Designer gouche is just designed and formulated differently for a different purpose... to design, create and scan. Its exactly what is says it is, to use for designing. It's perfectly matte for scanning and doesn't require to be lightfast. So anyway, I highly suggest the 72 well mijello double decker pallet for gouche. Hope you have a great day
